Download or read book A Fine Dessert Four Centuries Four Families One Delicious Treat written by Emily Jenkins and published by Schwartz & Wade. This book was released on 2015-01-27 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Best Illustrated Book From highly acclaimed author Jenkins and Caldecott Medal–winning illustrator Blackall comes a fascinating picture book in which four families, in four different cities, over four centuries, make the same delicious dessert: blackberry fool. This richly detailed book ingeniously shows how food, technology, and even families have changed throughout American history. In 1710, a girl and her mother in Lyme, England, prepare a blackberry fool, picking wild blackberries and beating cream from their cow with a bundle of twigs. The same dessert is prepared by an enslaved girl and her mother in 1810 in Charleston, South Carolina; by a mother and daughter in 1910 in Boston; and finally by a boy and his father in present-day San Diego. Kids and parents alike will delight in discovering the differences in daily life over the course of four centuries. Includes a recipe for blackberry fool and notes from the author and illustrator about their research.

Download or read book An Objective Theory of Probability written by Donald Gillies and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-03-02 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reissue of D. A. Gillies highly influential work, first published in 1973, is a philosophical theory of probability which seeks to develop von Mises' views on the subject. In agreement with von Mises, the author regards probability theory as a mathematical science like mechanics or electrodynamics, and probability as an objective, measurable concept like force, mass or charge. On the other hand, Dr Gillies rejects von Mises' definition of probability in terms of limiting frequency and claims that probability should be taken as a primitive or undefined term in accordance with modern axiomatic approaches. This of course raises the problem of how the abstract calculus of probability should be connected with the 'actual world of experiments'. It is suggested that this link should be established, not by a definition of probability, but by an application of Popper's concept of falsifiability. In addition to formulating his own interesting theory, Dr Gillies gives a detailed criticism of the generally accepted Neyman Pearson theory of testing, as well as of alternative philosophical approaches to probability theory. The reissue will be of interest both to philosophers with no previous knowledge of probability theory and to mathematicians interested in the foundations of probability theory and statistics.

Book excerpt: This edited book examines the concept of researcher independence and its various strands and manifestations using the conceptual lens of the hidden curriculum. Contributions highlight, discuss and exemplify the instrumental and formational roles played by the hidden curriculum in promoting and facilitating doctoral scholars’ researcher independence. Contributing to limited scholarly resources on the hidden curriculum, the book stimulates debate concerning its pragmatic and theoretical importance, particularly in pursuit of researcher independence. Including first-hand examples from doctoral scholars, doctoral supervisors, researcher developers and institutional leaders, the book will appeal to doctoral scholars, researchers and students working in the areas of doctoral education, curriculum and pedagogical practices, doctoral supervision, mentoring and coaching, researcher education, learning and development and educational leadership.

Download or read book The New Bosnian Mosaic written by Elissa Helms and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-17 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the violent events of the Bosnian war and the revelations of ethnic cleansing that shocked the world in the early 1990s, Bosnia has become a metaphor for the new ethnic nationalisms, for the transformation of warfare in the post-Cold War era, and for new forms of peacekeeping and state-building. This book is unique in offering a re-examination of the Bosnian case with a 'bottom-up' perspective. It gathers together cultural anthropologists and other social scientists to consider the specificities of the Bosnian case. However, the book also raises broader questions: what are the consequences of internecine violence and how should societies attempt to overcome them? Are the uncertainties and the transformations of Bosnian post-war society due entirely to the war, or are they related to wider processes encompassing post-communist Europe as a whole? And are the difficulties experienced by international state-building operations mainly due to distinctive features of the local societies or are they due to the policies promoted by the international community itself?
