Book Indelible Mark

    Book Details:
  • Author : José Octavio Velasco-Tejeda

Download or read book Indelible Mark written by José Octavio Velasco-Tejeda and published by Palibrio. This book was released on 2015-06-01 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Skepticals in religion: watch out! Do not criticize anything about any religion. It is not of good taste; it is considered lack of respect and tact. Better turn apart a political party, science, a football team or anything else; but do not touch religion, even with the petal of a rose. What kind of privilege is that? Who provided it? It is not the case for this book. In it, I talk about the evil they all produce. Its essence is to forbid thinking. Faith and revelations cannot be doubted a bit, even existing ample evidence of its falsehood. From the hundreds of religions, which is the true one? Coincidentally and curiously, the one that each person happens to follow, by pure chance, of where he/she was born and which religion parents indoctrinated, nothing else. The eminent evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins comments, very appropiately: We are all atheists, but I believe in one god less than you. It results interesting to view the debates of the late Christopher Hitchens or Richard Dawkins versus fundamentalists who always bring faith or revelation and thus, never answer the questions asked or the mentioned commentaries. Homo sapiens has proved capable of great feats although his design shows carelessness, unless we believe in the evidence of evolution. If the damages to children were purely mental, that would be severe enough; but the vast amount of pederasts, such as Marcial Maciel, protected all his life by the pope J. P. II, who has been already canonized! Priests are much like politicians; they cover their backs, and they hardly ever get caught!

Book The Fire Signals of Lachish

Download or read book The Fire Signals of Lachish written by Israel Finkelstein and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2011-06-23 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume honoring Tel Aviv University archaeologist David Ussishkin, colleagues and students representing some of the major names in the field today present 25 essays on a variety of topics of interest to the honoree. The contributions cover a range of periods from the Late Bronze Age through the Persian period and disparate subjects such as Judahite bullae, destruction levels at Megiddo, a diversity of results from various tells in Israel (and one in Jordan), Egyptian influence on Canaan, the city of Jerusalem and its temple, and much on the archaeology of the Shephelah, an area of particular interest to the honoree—who is best known for his excavations at Tell ed-Duweir, the site of biblical Lachish. The volume takes its title from a reference in one of the Lachish ostraca. From 1966 until his retirement in 2004, David Ussishkin taught in the Department of Archaeology and Ancient Near Eastern Studies at Tel Aviv University. Between 1975 and 1978, he served as Chair of the Department, and between 1980 and 1984 as the Director of the Institute of Archaeology. In 1996, he was nominated incumbent of the Austria Chair in Archaeology of the Land of Israel in the Biblical Period. He served as the editor of Tel Aviv: The Journal of Archaeology of Tel Aviv University for 30 years.

Book Impressions and Reflections

Download or read book Impressions and Reflections written by Peter Chapel and published by eBook Partnership. This book was released on 2014-06-16 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My song lyrics were a consequence of being a captive in my automobile twice a month from 1978 to 1981 while driving eight hours at a stretch, mostly at night. This opportunity to reminisce made me recall incidents and people who, for one reason or another, left an indelible impression on my mind. With a small cassette tape recorder by my side, I decided one day to express my thoughts, memories, and feelings. As the words formed phrases and sentences they fell into a rhythm and evolved into melodies that became my form of self-expression for about two years. I never tried, consciously, to be poetic or profound.Writing in the first person singular seemed the easiest way to go. Taking advantage of poetic license it worked well even when I, personally, had the experience only as an observer.Because I have had no musical training I depended on a friend to transcribe the songs from tape to lead sheet form and piano accompaniment.Where I used real names, the songs were intended to be a tribute to the persons. Where a fictitious name was used, it was no less a tribute.

  • Publisher : University of New Hampshire Press
  • Release : 2017-11-07
  • ISBN : 1512601381

Download or read book Herman Melville written by Katie McGettigan and published by University of New Hampshire Press. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this imaginative book, Katie McGettigan argues that Melville's novels and poetry demonstrate a sustained engagement with the physical, social, and economic materiality of industrial and commercial forms of print. Further, she shows that this "aesthetics of the material text," central both to Melville's stylistic signature and to his innovations in form, allows Melville to explore the production of selfhood, test the limits of narrative authenticity, and question the nature of artistic originality. Combining archival research in print and publishing history with close reading, McGettigan situates Melville's works alongside advertising materials, magazine articles, trade manuals, and British and American commentary on the literary industry to demonstrate how Melville's literary practice relies on and aestheticizes the specific conditions of literary production in which he worked. For Melville, the book is a physical object produced by particular technological processes, as well as an entity that manifests social and economic values. His characters carry books, write on them, and even sleep on them; they also imagine, observe, and participate in the buying and selling of books. Melville employs the book's print, paper, and binding - and its market circulations - to construct literary figures, to shape textual form, and to create irony and ambiguity. Exploring the printed book in Melville's writings brings neglected sections of his poetry and prose to the fore and invites new readings of familiar passages and images. These readings encourage a reassessment of Melville's career as shaped by his creative engagements with print, rather than his failures in the literary marketplace. McGettigan demonstrates that a sustained and deliberate imaginative dialogue with the material text is at the core of Melville's expressive practice and that, for Melville, the printed book served as a site for imagining the problems and possibilities of modernity.
