Book Indecent Disorder

Download or read book Indecent Disorder written by Donald William Cashen and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000-11-30 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calvin Tyndale’s friends saw him as a tall, handsome, intelligent twenty-five year old ne’er-do-well who could have, be, or do anything he wanted, but chose to be a nobody, and do nothing more than spend his waking hours indulging his physical appetites. His father, Alistair Tyndale, whom he addresses as sir, couldn’t care less; Katliene, his very young and strong-willed mother, whom he calls Kit, not only cares, but is determined that her son pursue a career befitting the Tyndale name. She gently but resolutely presses him into considering a career as, of all things, a clergyman. Tyndale agrees in spite of the fact that he sees the church as a relic of the past, out of touch with the people it claims to serve, dominated by a dysfunctional clergy, suffocating in its own creeds, wallowing in theological doctrines which lacerate the soul with guilt, and plagued throughout its history by its deviant fears of human sexuality. So far as he’s concerned two things stand in the way of that cadaverous “body” succumbing to the inevitable, social status and money. The title, Indecent Disorder, is a play on the Apostle Paul’s words to the Church at Corinth where he suggests that at the very least, “...all things should be done decently and in order.”

Book Mental Disorders and the Law

Download or read book Mental Disorders and the Law written by Lee Peng Kok and published by NUS Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although numerous books have been separately written on mental disorders and law, there is as yet no readily accessible literature dealing with both these disciplines in a single volume in Singapore and Malaysia. This present text is therefore intended to fill this gap with two aims in mind, i.e., to address the need for a practical manual useful for ready reference to the clinician, the lawyer advising his client and also for other interested laymen, and for the reader's general information and knowledge. Each chapter is structured to provide an overview of both the psychiatric and legal aspects of the subject matter. Wherever applicable or feasible, an analysis of local cases is made and comparative evaluation attempted with materials from other countries, especially those prevailing in common law and Anglo-American jurisdictions. The local law as presented in this book applies to both Singapore and Malaysia but where there exist differences, these are highlighted in the text itself.

Book Indecent Advances

Download or read book Indecent Advances written by James Polchin and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2020-05-26 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edgar Award finalist, Best Fact Crime American Masters (PBS), “1 of 5 Essential Culture Reads” One of CrimeReads’ “Best True Crime Books of the Year” “A fast–paced, meticulously researched, thoroughly engaging (and often infuriating) look–see into the systematic criminalization of gay men and widespread condemnation of homosexuality post–World War I.” —Alexis Burling, San Francisco Chronicle Stories of murder have never been just about killers and victims. Instead, crime stories take the shape of their times and reflect cultural notions and prejudices. In this Edgar Award–finalist for Best Fact Crime, James Polchin recovers and recounts queer stories from the crime pages―often lurid and euphemistic―that reveal the hidden history of violence against gay men. But what was left unsaid in these crime pages provides insight into the figure of the queer man as both criminal and victim, offering readers tales of vice and violence that aligned gender and sexual deviance with tragic, gruesome endings. Victims were often reported as having made “indecent advances,” forcing the accused's hands in self–defense and reducing murder charges to manslaughter. As noted by Caleb Cain in The New Yorker review of Indecent Advances, “it’s impossible to understand gay life in twentieth–century America without reckoning with the dark stories. Gay men were unable to shake free of them until they figured out how to tell the stories themselves, in a new way.” Indecent Advances is the first book to fully investigate these stories of how queer men navigated a society that criminalized them and displayed little compassion for the violence they endured. Polchin shows, with masterful insight, how this discrimination was ultimately transformed by activists to help shape the burgeoning gay rights movement in the years leading up to Stonewall.
