President Grant signed legislation in 1871 establishing the United States Fish Commission. During the 100 years that followed, Federal fishery programs have grown but at times these programs have been placed in different organizations of the Government under different titles. In October 1970, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) was established in the United States Department of Commerce. Most of the programs of the Bureau of Commercial Fisheries and the marine game fish research program of the Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife of the Department of the Interior were transferred to NOAA The National Marine Fisheries Service is now the entity in NOAA responsible for Federal activities in marine fisheries. This volume was prepared by the former Bureau of Commercial Fisheries, and thus is concerned with marine and fresh-water commercial fishing activities.

Book North Pacific Fisheries Management

Download or read book North Pacific Fisheries Management written by Hiroshi Kasahara and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-17 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In anticipation of the UN Conference of the Law of the Sea taking place in 1973, Dr Kasahara and Dr Burke of the University of Washington first published North Pacific Fisheries Management earlier that year. The conference brought fishery territories to a global stage with delegates that may not be as informed about ocean issues as those previously making decisions. Therefore the Program of International Studies of Fishery Arrangements was created to explore the management of fisheries in specific regions. This study focusses on the North Pacific region and delves into the implications of a global regime, generic problems concerning fishery management, distribution and institutions as well as alternative arrangements that can be made to make the management of fisheries smoother. This title will be of interest to students of environmental studies and policy makers.

Book Marine Fishery Resources of the Pacific Islands

Download or read book Marine Fishery Resources of the Pacific Islands written by R. D. Gillett and published by Food & Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO). This book was released on 2010 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This type of fishing can be divided into three categories: (1) small-scale commercial fishing (also referred to as "artisanal"), which can be further broadly subdivided into those operations supplying domestic markets and those operations producing export commodities; (2) subsistence fisheries, which support rural economies and are extremely important to the region's nutrition and food security; and (3) the industrial-scale shrimp fisheries, which in the region only occur in Papua New Guinea. The region's fishery resources can be broadly split into two main categories: oceanic (offshore) and coastal (inshore). Oceanic or offshore resources include tunas, billfish and allied species. They are characterized by an open-water pelagic habitat and potentially extensive individual movements. Coastal or inshore resources include a wide range of finfish and invertebrates.
