Book Increasing College going Self efficacy of Rural Fifth Grade Students

Download or read book Increasing College going Self efficacy of Rural Fifth Grade Students written by Michelle Lynn Jensen and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work of professional school counselors in helping students achieve academically and increasing their college-going rates is significant work. Research indicates that high school and even middle school is often too late for students to begin the process of college and career planning. This dissertation includes two manuscripts. The first manuscript is a review of the literature related to college and career readiness, childhood development of elementary school students, including their college-going self-efficacy, instructional strategies that school counselors should consider employing in presenting college and career readiness units, and factors specific to working with elementary school students in rural areas. The second manuscript describes a study using a time series research design that examined the effect of a college access intervention, I'm Going to College, on the college-going self-efficacy of rural fifth grade students (n = 34) in an effort to determine the value of early (pre-adolescent) college access interventions. The hypothesis that the I'm Going to College curriculum increased the college-going self-efficacy of rural fifth grade students as evaluated by the College-Going Self-Efficacy Scale (CGSES), was supported. Results indicated that there is a relationship between early college access interventions and college-going self-efficacy of rural fifth grade students as shown by significant change in three of the six items on the CGSES. Implications of this study are discussed.

Book excerpt: This quantitative study examines the role of an explicit college-going intervention on the self-reported levels of college-going self-efficacy for rural middle school students. While there are a multitude of variables that influence a student's decision to pursue formal education beyond high school, this study focused on college-going self-efficacy, which is one of the constructs included in the Social Cognitive Career Theory. Rural seventh grade students answered fourteen questions from a College-Going Self-Efficacy scale pre-intervention and then completed the same questions post-intervention. The intervention consisted of lessons that addressed common barriers students see as prohibiting them from going to college, including finding ways to pay for college, having enough family support for college, and possessing the academic ability to go to college. Findings from the study showed that the self-reported levels of college-going self-efficacy did increase from the first survey administration to the second. Additionally, findings revealed that students qualifying for free or reduced lunches had a lower college-going self-efficacy score than their peers in the paid lunch group. Gains seen in college-going self-efficacy scores were greater for students in the paid lunch category than those in the free / reduced lunch category. While many factors contributing to students' post high school plans are based in family experiences, culture, or expectations, this study demonstrated that student levels of college-going self-efficacy can be impacted by a school-based intervention.

Book excerpt: Many efforts have been directed towards providing equitable access to higher education for youth from low-income, first-generation families. Despite gains, attendance and graduation rates from college are consistently lower for these students (U.S. Department of Education National Center for Education Statistics, 2012). A variety of initiatives have been implemented to support students' entry into college, persistence to graduation, and increased access to professional careers. One such program is Talent Search, which provides middle school students opportunities to achieve academic success and to become knowledgeable about college and career options. KU Talent Search offers a summer career camp as part of its programming. The Career Horizons Summer Program (CHSP) exists to help students between 6th and 7th grades explore career possibilities, build potential for success in academics and careers, and become more comfortable in a college environment (Dukstein, 2012b). This study examined beliefs about college and careers in a group of 52 students, as well as the impact of the CHSP on the intervention group. Educational aspirations and expectations, and career and college-going self-efficacy were assessed. It was predicted that participation in the camp would result in an increase in college-going and career self-efficacy. The study also provided additional insight into the construct of college-going self-efficacy. Using a quantitative comparison group design, data were collected from camp participants and from students who were eligible to participate but did not. Pre and posttest surveys assessed educational aspirations and expectations and included scales to measure career self-efficacy (Fouad & Smith, 1997) and college-going self-efficacy (Gibbons & Borders, 2010a). Educational aspirations and expectations were high in all participants and a bivariate correlation analysis revealed that career self-efficacy and college-going self-efficacy were highly correlated. Comparisons between the intervention and the comparison group suggested that the CHSP did have an impact on career and college self-efficacy. It is important to understand the characteristics of a successful college and career access program, and to identify interventions that are most impactful. The findings of this study add to understanding of one such intervention and may have implications for specific practices that can increase potential for college success.

Book Building Self Efficacy in Fifth Grade Art Students Through Authentic Assessments and Self Regulating Strategies

Download or read book Building Self Efficacy in Fifth Grade Art Students Through Authentic Assessments and Self Regulating Strategies written by Hannah Richardson and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research explores solutions and challenges pertaining to a child's development of self-efficacy. After working with fifth grade students in a public education setting, Inoticed an increased reliance on teachers for both creative and procedural directions. This paper explores research of educators who examine the internal and external factors that influence the development of a child's self-efficacy. The study measures the development of self-efficacy over a two-month period, after a Studio Habits of Mind (Hetland, et al., 2013) Checklist and self-regulating strategies have been integrated into the curriculum. Data is collected through the use of pre-and post- metacognitive surveys, the Studio Habits of Mind (Hetland, et al., 2013) Checklist, observations, and post- interviews. The data collected from the pre- and post- metacognitive surveys is inconclusive. The other data collected through student written and verbal statements, conversations, and interviews demonstrates that by creating a classroom environment that incorporates the Studio Habits of Mind (Hetland, et al., 2013) students' self-efficacy can be improved. This study then outlines specific assessment and instructional strategies that can help teachers incorporate the Studio Habits of Mind (Hetland, et al., 2013) into any elementary art program. Appendices include: (1) Student Metacognitive Awareness Inventory; (2) Protocol for Distributing Metacognitive Survey; (3) Teacher Observations of Student Metacognitive Awareness Inventory; (4) Studio Habits of Mind Checklist; (5) Interview Protocol Form; (6) Parental Consent Form for Participation in Research: Media Elementary School; (7) Research Site Support Form: Media Elementary School; (8) Parental Consent Form for Participation in Research: Rose Tree Elementary School; (9) Research Site Support Form: Rose Tree Elementary School; (10) Teacher Consent Form; (11) Unit Plan: Underwater Value Scales; (12) Pre-Planning Reflection Questions; and (13) Reflective Worksheet.
