Book Are We Bodies Or Souls

Download or read book Are We Bodies Or Souls written by Richard Swinburne and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2019 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are humans? What makes us who we are? Many think that we are just complicated machines, or animals that are different from machines only by being conscious. In Are We Bodies or Souls? Richard Swinburne comes to the defence of the soul and presents new philosophical arguments that are supported by modern neuroscience. When scientific advances enable neuroscientists to transplant a part of brain into a new body, he reasons, no matter how much we can find out about their brain activity or conscious experiences we will never know whether the resulting person is the same as before or somebody entirely new. Swinburne thus argues that we are immaterial souls sustained in existence by our brains. Sensations, thoughts, and intentions are conscious events in our souls that cause events in our brains. While scientists might discover some of the laws of nature that determine conscious events and brain events, each person's soul is an individual thing and this is what ultimately makes us who we are.

Book Salt in My Soul

Download or read book Salt in My Soul written by Mallory Smith and published by Random House. This book was released on 2019-03-12 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The diaries of a remarkable young woman who was determined to live a meaningful and happy life despite her struggle with cystic fibrosis and a rare superbug—from age fifteen to her death at the age of twenty-five—the inspiration for the original streaming documentary Salt in My Soul “An exquisitely nuanced chronicle of a terrified but hopeful young woman whose life was beginning and ending, all at once.”—Los Angeles Times Diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at the age of three, Mallory Smith grew up to be a determined, talented young woman who inspired others even as she privately raged against her illness. Despite the daily challenges of endless medical treatments and a deep understanding that she’d never lead a normal life, Mallory was determined to “Live Happy,” a mantra she followed until her death. Mallory worked hard to make the most out of the limited time she had, graduating Phi Beta Kappa from Stanford University, becoming a cystic fibrosis advocate well known in the CF community, and embarking on a career as a professional writer. Along the way, she cultivated countless intimate friendships and ultimately found love. For more than ten years, Mallory recorded her thoughts and observations about struggles and feelings too personal to share during her life, leaving instructions for her mother to publish her work posthumously. She hoped that her writing would offer insight to those living with, or loving someone with, chronic illness. What emerges is a powerful and inspiring portrait of a brave young woman and blossoming writer who did not allow herself to be defined by disease. Her words offer comfort and hope to readers, even as she herself was facing death. Salt in My Soul is a beautifully crafted, intimate, and poignant tribute to a short life well lived—and a call for all of us to embrace our own lives as fully as possible.

Book Less Incomplete

Download or read book Less Incomplete written by Sandie Gustus and published by John Hunt Publishing. This book was released on 2011-05-27 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on an advanced, new scientific approach to studying the consciousness, soul, spirit, as proposed by renowned Brazilian consciousness researcher, Dr. Waldo Vieira, this book provides a comprehensive understanding of the reality of the human condition beyond the physical body, offering readers a profound opportunity to increase their self-awareness, self-confidence, balance and maturity, and to take control of their experience of life. In this book, conscientiology and projectiology, the two new sciences proposed by Vieira, are explained in layman's terms. Conscientiology is the science that studies the consciousness, investigating all of its attributes, properties, characteristics, bodies, lives and phenomena. The book examines three attributes of the consciousness; that it is multidimensional, multiexistential, i.e. it reincarnates, and that it evolves. Projectiology is the study of the projection of the consciousness or out-of-body experience commonly known as OBE

Book On the Soul

  • Author : Aristotle
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press

  • ISBN : 0191026433
  • Pages : 286 pages

Download or read book On the Soul written by Aristotle and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-11 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: '. . . the more honourable animals have been allotted a more honourable soul. . . ' What is the nature of the soul? It is this question that Aristotle sought to answer in De Anima (On the Soul). In doing so he offers a psychological theory that encompasses not only human beings but all living beings. Its basic thesis, that the soul is the form of an organic body, sets it in sharp contrast with both Pre-Socratic physicalism and Platonic dualism. On the Soul contains Aristotle's definition of the soul, and his explanations of nutrition, perception, cognition, and animal self-motion. The general theory in De Anima is augmented in the shorter works of Parva Naturalia, which deal with perception, memory and recollection, sleep and dreams, longevity, life-cycles, and psycho-physiology. This new translation brings together all of Aristotle's extant and complementary psychological works, and adds as a supplement ancient testimony concerning his lost writings dealing with the soul. The introduction by Fred D. Miller, Jr. explains the central place of the soul in Aristotle's natural science, the unifying themes of his psychological theory, and his continuing relevance for modern philosophy and psychology.

Book The Domain of Being

    Book Details:
  • Author : Celestine M. Bittle
  • Publisher : BoD – Books on Demand
  • Release : 2022-06-15
  • ISBN : 3868382682

Download or read book The Domain of Being written by Celestine M. Bittle and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2022-06-15 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In accordance with the purpose as an introduction for students, the scope of the book is frankly positive and constructive. It attempts to build up an understanding of the matter of ontology in a logical manner, using simple language, illustrating the subjects with copious examples, and extracting the contents of each chapter into compact summaries. Some of the more abstruse problems of ontology, such as the problem of essence and existence, have been omitted; it was felt that the average student would derive little benefit from a lengthy discussion of problems which have taxed the ingenuity and acumen of the most profound intellects. Such problems may be attacked after the student has become acquainted with the ideas and subjects which form the foundation of the science of metaphysics. After all, the student cannot be expected to be a professional philosopher; it should be sufficient if he acquires a thorough grounding in fundamentals, so that he can deepen his knowledge through subsequent reading and study. In a general way we may define metaphysics as the science of the ultimate principles and properties of real beings.
