Download or read book Understanding the Reliability and Longevity of All ceramic Zirconia Based Restorations written by Sowmya Shetty and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People with missing or decayed teeth have limitations to chewing, smiling and speaking as opposed to those with a full complement. Many have trouble in just accepting tooth loss, and face difficulty in leading a normal life with removable appliances. Fixed partial dentures are therefore a viable option as substitute teeth. However, material combinations that have been employed never meet the dual needs of functionality and aesthetics. The need for functional aesthetic materials is especially pressing for posterior regions. -- The literature seems to favour partially stabilised zirconia coping veneered with feldspathic porcelain. The advantages to using these systems include aesthetics and biocompatibility, but these materials need to be tested vigorously for reliability. A simulated clinical environment seems ideal as clinical trials are usually expensive and are generally at variance with each other. -- The primary objective of this project was to identify major causes of crown restoration failure, whilst using different strategies to machine the copings and with several in-vitro contact testing methodologies. The project also assessed the initial suitability of a modified cooling laboratory practice for hybridisation at the core-veneer interface to optimise the reliability of the porcelain veneered copings. -- Methods: Copings were milled from partially stabilised zirconia in 'hard' (fully sintered blocks) and 'soft' (partially dense whilst milling and then sintered) states. Marginal/internal adaptation was recorded using a cement space replica technique. -- Fracture strength of copings was determined and, subsequently fatigue studies in uni-axial and mouth motion configurations were carried out. Raman spectroscopy was used to characterise the degree of hybridisation at the interface, using standard laboratory practice and a modified cooling method for porcelain.

Book Analysis of Tetragonal to Monoclinic Phase Transformation Caused by Accelerated Artificial Aging and the Effects of Microstructure in Stabilized Zirconia

Download or read book Analysis of Tetragonal to Monoclinic Phase Transformation Caused by Accelerated Artificial Aging and the Effects of Microstructure in Stabilized Zirconia written by Thomas J. Lucas and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This investigation addresses the issue that yttria stabilized zirconia is being used as a dental biomaterial without substantial evidence of its long-term viability. Furthermore, stabilized zirconia (SZ) undergoes low temperature degradation (LTD), which can lead to roughening of the surface. A rougher exterior can lead to increased wear of the antagonist in the oral environment. Despite the LTD concerns, SZ is now widely used in restorative dentistry, including full contour crowns. A comparison of aging methods to determine the role of artificial aging on inducing the transformation has not been extensively studied. Therefore, simulations of the transformation process were investigated by comparing different methods of accelerated aging. The rejected null hypothesis is that the temperature of aging treatment will not affect the time required to cause measurable monoclinic transformation of yttria stabilized zirconia. The transformation of SZ starts at the surface and progresses inward; however, it is unclear whether the progression is constant for different aging conditions. This investigation analyzed the depth of transformation as a function of aging conditions for stabilized zirconia in the top 5-6 micrometers from the surface. The rejected null hypothesis is that the transformation amount is constant throughout the first six micrometers from the surface. The effects of grain size on the amount of monoclinic transformation were also investigated. This study aimed to determine if the grain size of partially stabilized zirconia affects the amount of monoclinic transformation, surface roughness, and property degradation due to aging. The rejected null hypothesis is that the grain size will not affect the amount of monoclinic transformation, thus have no effect on surface roughening or property degradation. The final part of this study addresses the wear of enamel when opposing zirconia by observing how grain size and aging affected the wear rate of an enamel antagonist. The rejected null hypothesis is that neither zirconia grain size, nor aging condition affects the wear of an enamel antagonist.

Book Bonding to Ceramics

Download or read book Bonding to Ceramics written by Alvaro Della Bona and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bonding to Ceramics provides students, researchers and clinicians with detailed knowledge of ceramic structures, adhesion mechanisms, quality research design, material selection and clinical performance of dental ceramics. Based on collaborative research efforts and evidence-based clinical data, this book describes the basic properties of ceramics and the applications, failures and limitations of this material. The book features 500 clinical images, many of them in 3D, to aid the understanding of: ceramic microstructures; the basic principles and properties of ceramics; clinical applications and causes of failure. It also discusses the development of experiments to test ceramic designs, how to select the appropriate material according to the specific clinical application, as well as evidence regarding adhesive mechanisms for bonding ceramic restorations. Through examining clinical failures, the book also aims to improve clinical performance through the suggestion of improved materials, structures and designs. The ultimate aim of this book therefore is to provide the reader with the knowledge to be able to select the appropriate ceramic material and bonding technique for each clinical application.

Book Osseo Integrated Implants

Download or read book Osseo Integrated Implants written by Gunther Heimke and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1990-07-03 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this two-volume work is osseo integration. It discusses the use of glue to attach bony tissue as well as the use of the absence of biochemical interactions between some oxide ceramics (particularly pure A1203 ceramic) and the adjacent tissue. This book also demonstrates the possibility of controlling the interface remodelling by the stresses and strains created by the insertion of the implant. Written in a concise, easy-to-read format, this text covers the use of implants in orthopedics, maxillo-facial surgery, and dentistry. All those involved with bioengineering, orthopedics, maxillo-facial surgery, dentistry, and biomechanics will find this reference to be of particular interest.
