Book In Vinculis Or The Prisoner of War

Download or read book In Vinculis Or The Prisoner of War written by Anthony M Keiley and published by . This book was released on 2020-06-11 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: POINT LOOKOUT, Maryland, was the largest prisoner of war holding pen for Confederates. Its position on the tip of a peninsula formed by the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay, seemed perfect, ─ for a prison camp. The first prisoners were taken in July of 1863 and were held in tents. Eventually as many as 20,000 prisoners would endure the boiling heat of summer and the freezing cold of winter. The crowded, inadequate quarters, bad food, rampant disease, and inhumane treatment would lead to the deaths of 3,584 Confederate prisoners.Anthony M. Keiley was a young Virginia soldier who found himself in this situation after having been captured in the fighting to defend Petersburg. Keiley was sent to Point Lookout, where the reflection of the sun upon the sand caused inflammation of his eyes, as well as enduring unthinkable hardships. Elmira Prison in New York was his next destination. He spent five months at Point Lookout and Elmira before he was exchanged through the lines. He also served a brief time in jail after the war, when, working as a newspaper editor, he criticized the Radical Reconstruction government.Anthony Michael Keiley had paid the price of being in vinculis ─ in chains for defending the Southland, ─during the war, by arms and after the war, by pen.To follow are chronicles of his experiences in prison, told with a sparkle of his inimitable Irish wit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Prisoner Of War is Anthony Keiley's extraordinary story of his experiences as a captive confederate soldier while in two federal prisons during the Civil War. Union soldiers captured Keiley when Generals Gillmore and Kautz were sent to capture Petersburg, and destroy the railroad and common bridges across the Appomatox in June of 1864. Spawned by false depictions of the character of people from the south by the northern press, Keiley revised his original story in an effort to portray the atrocities committed against the people of the southern states by the Union armies in the name of liberty.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Vinculis, or the Prisoner of War: Being the Experience of a Rebel in Two Federal Pens, Interspersed With Reminiscences of the Late War, Anecdotes of Southern Generals, Etc I answer, that the Southern people can be expected to have little interest in the American name, while they are denied American privileges, and we shall very contentedly see the American name suffer any reproach that truth can bring upon it. Nor do I think that while Jefferson Davis and C. C. Clay, and their compatriots, are denounced in official proclamations as assassins, the people of the United States can close the mouth of any accuser who offers reproach to the American name. Book Civil War Talks

Download or read book Civil War Talks written by George S. Bernard and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 896 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George S. Bernard was a Petersburg lawyer and member of the 12th Virginia Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. Over the course of his life, Bernard wrote extensively about his wartime experiences and collected accounts from other veterans. In 1892, he published War Talks of Confederate Veterans, a collection of firsthand accounts focusing on the battles and campaigns of the 12th Virginia that is widely read to this day. Bernard prepared a second volume but was never able to publish it. After his death in 1912, his papers became scattered or simply lost. But a series of finds, culminating with the discovery of a cache of papers in Roanoke in 2004, have made it possible to reconstruct a complete manuscript of the unpublished second volume. The resulting book, Civil War Talks, contains speeches, letters, Bernard's wartime diary, and other firsthand accounts of the war not only by veterans of the Confederacy, such as General William Mahone, but by Union veterans as well. Their personal stories cover the major military campaigns in Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania--Seven Pines, Malvern Hill, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Petersburg, and Appomattox. For the general reader, this volume offers evocative testimonies focusing on the experiences of individual soldiers. For scholars, it provides convenient access to many accounts that, until now, have not been widely available or have been simply unknown.

Download or read book So Far from Dixie written by Philip Burnham and published by Taylor Trade Publishing. This book was released on 2003-09-04 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across the North, 26,000 Rebels died in what was called "Yankee captivity"—six times the number of Confederate dead listed for the battle of Gettysburg, and twice that for the Southern dead of Antietam, Chickamauga, Chancellorsville, Seven Days, Shiloh, and Second Manassas combined. "If there was ever a hell on earth," one Confederate veteran remembered, "Elmira prison was that hell." New York's POW camp—nicknamed "Helmira"—was the most infamous of Northern prisons during the Civil War, places where hunger, brutality, and disease were everyday hazards. So Far from Dixie is the gripping narrative history of five men who were sent to Elmira and survived to document their stories. Berry Benson promised that he would escape the prison under honorable circumstances. Anthony Keiley charmed Union authorities into giving him a job at Elmira and later became mayor of Richmond, Virginia. John King refused to build coffins for his fellow prisoners. Marcus Toney disdained to take the Union oath of loyalty until long after the war had ended. And Frank Wilkenson, a Union army volunteer only fifteen years old, endured the same humiliating punishments meted out to the prisoners he was guarding.
