Book excerpt: "Marvelous, terrifying fun, especially if you've ever suspected that the world is an unreal construct built solely to keep you from knowing who you really are. Which it is, of course."--"Rolling Stone" Ragle Gumm has a unique job: every day he wins a newspaper contest. And when he isn't consulting his charts and tables, he enjoys his life in a small town in 1959. At least, that's what he thinks. But then strange things start happening. He finds a phone book where all the numbers have been disconnected, and a magazine article about a famous starlet he's never heard of named Marilyn Monroe. Plus, everyday objects are beginning to disappear and are replaced by strips of paper with words written on them like "bowl of flowers" and "soft drink stand." When Ragle skips town to try to find the cause of these bizarre occurrences, his discovery could make him question everything he has ever known.

Book Out of Place in Time and Space

Download or read book Out of Place in Time and Space written by Lamont Wood and published by Red Wheel/Weiser. This book was released on 2011-08-15 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many examples of technology and beliefs appearing decades—even centuries before they supposedly originated. The Apollo Program was outlined a century before it happened. A painting from the Middle Ages shows a flying toy helicopter. We’ve found ancient Greek computers and heard stories of Roman death rays. The Pacific Front of World War II was described 16 years before the war started. The existence and documentation of these and many other events and anomalies impossibly ahead of their time are beyond dispute. Out of Place in Time and Space delves deeply into these impossibilities, showcasing: Objects, beliefs, and practices from the present that show up in the past, long before they were supposedly invented. Personal careers that appear to have been founded on knowlege of the future. Roman-era machines that were hundreds of years ahead of their time UFOs, never officially documented in any time period, yet still showing up in medieval paintings.

He has poured half a box of detergent into a washing machine at their NYC apartment Laundry Room. When she walks in to do her wash, the floor is covered with bubbles. She tells him, "You've put way too much soap in." And their conversation continues for 47 years. Love is sprinkled with small incidents, petty fights, heartache, loss and regret. Poet Mary Allen Sochet reaches into her own story to take us through the times before and after her husband's death. After fifty years with someone, can you possibly start all over again? Does loss overshadow all that came before? "Time Out" shows us that even the most plain ordinary moments can hold as much importance as the milestones. Loss does not mark the end of the story.

Book No Place in Time

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sharon B. Oster
  • Publisher : Wayne State University Press
  • Release : 2018-11-12
  • ISBN : 0814345832
  • Pages : 321 pages

Download or read book No Place in Time written by Sharon B. Oster and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-12 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No Place in Time: The Hebraic Myth in Late-Nineteenth-Century American Literature examines how the Hebraic myth, in which Jewishness became a metaphor for an ancient, pre-Christian past, was reimagined in nineteenth-century American realism. The Hebraic myth, while integral to a Protestant understanding of time, was incapable of addressing modern Jewishness, especially in the context of the growing social and national concern around the "Jewish problem." Sharon B. Oster shows how realist authors consequently cast Jews as caught between a distant past and a promising American future. In either case, whether creating or disrupting temporal continuity, Jewishness existed outside of time. No Place in Time complicates the debates over Eastern European immigration in the 1880s and questions of assimilation to a Protestant American culture. The first chapter begins in the world of periodicals, an interconnected literary culture, out of which Abraham Cahan emerged as a literary voice of Jewish immigrants caught between nostalgia and a messianic future outside of linear progression. Moving from the margins to the center of literary realism, the second chapter revolves around Henry James’s modernization of the "noble Hebrew" as a figure of mediation and reconciliation. The third chapter extends this analysis into the naturalism of Edith Wharton, who takes up questions of intimacy and intermarriage, and places "the Jew" at the nexus of competing futures shaped by uncertainty and risk. A number of Jewish female perspectives are included in the fourth chapter that recasts plots of cultural assimilation through intermarriage in terms of time: if a Jewish past exists in tension with an American future, these writers recuperate the "Hebraic myth" for themselves to imagine a viable Jewish future. No Place in Time ends with a brief look at poet Emma Lazarus, whose understanding of Jewishness was distinctly modern, not nostalgic, mythical, or dead. No Place in Time highlights a significant shift in how Jewishness was represented in American literature, and, as such, raises questions of identity, immigration, and religion. This volume will be of interest to scholars of nineteenth- and turn-of-the-century American literature, American Jewish literature, and literature as it intersects with immigration, religion, or temporality, as well as anyone interested in Jewish studies.

(Vicky Zimmerman, author of Miss Cecily's Recipes for Exceptional Ladies) Daisy works nights. Nate works days. But maybe they aren't as different as they assume. Daisy is the night security guard at the Manchester Museum of Social History. She takes her job very seriously, protecting the museum from teenage troublemakers. Nate works the day shift, though he'd be more suited as a museum guide the way he chats with the visitors. Daisy doesn't approve: how does he find it so easy to talk to strangers? For five minutes each day, their shifts overlap at handover. It's the only interaction they have...until mysterious things begin to happen at the museum. Daisy notices priceless objects going missing and then reappearing, with no explanation (and with nothing on the security footage!). No one believes her except Nate, and he agrees to help her investigate. They soon discover they have a lot more in common than they realized...and their investigation uncovers not only the truth, but new possibilities for their future.
