Book Training the Vestibule for Aerospace Operations

Download or read book Training the Vestibule for Aerospace Operations written by Kent K. Gillingham and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emphasis must be placed on the evidence that the vestibular system is capable of being trained. On the basis of our understanding of the vestibular system, of spatial disorientation, and of motion sickness, operational vestibular problems should be able to be dealt with using the tools of education and training. Whatever method is used, the need for vestibular training persists as long a spatial disorientation wastes the lives of aircrew and motion sickness compromises military effectiveness.

Book Unbalanced A View From The Vestibule Schizophrenia And Hyperattention

Download or read book Unbalanced A View From The Vestibule Schizophrenia And Hyperattention written by Simeon Locke and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2011-02-28 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The symptoms of schizophrenia have generated interest for more than two centuries. How are they produced? Where do they come from? In this highly stimulating book, Dr Locke proposes a new basic mechanism to account for many of the findings in schizophrenia. His ideas are based on observations and experiments at a State Psychiatric Hospital where he was the director of a Neurological Unit for ten years. He was struck by an outstanding sign of schizophrenia which had not attracted attention in the classical literature. Schizophrenia patients, he noticed, were too alert, too attentive. If this hyperawareness or widespread unfocussed attention is the result of excessive arousal, Dr Locke reasoned it would make sense to look into the vestibular system which is alleged to be one of the most effective contributions to the ascending reticular activation system. This original view of schizophrenia is attractive because it is creative, supported by a wide range of evidence and above all testable. Unbalanced: A View From the Vestibule will be of interest not only to psychiatrists, neuroscientists and mental health workers, but also to anyone interested in how the human mind works.

Book Vestibular System Part 1 Basic Mechanisms

Download or read book Vestibular System Part 1 Basic Mechanisms written by H.H. Kornhuber and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The details of the receptor mechanism are not yet fully understood for any sensory system. However, sufficient data are available (for the vestibular system and for other systems) to permit meaningful tracking of the sensory messages through the nervous system and via conscious experience. The reception, process ing, storage and output of information in man and other animals, as done by means of receptors, neurons, secretory cells and muscle fibers, are collectively referred to as mind. Sensory physiologists tend to disbelieve in extrasensory perception. Sensory physiology in general is an area upon which different sciences and methods converge. Anatomists, physiologists, psychologists, physicists, chemists, and engineers have made important contributions to sensory physiology. What is special about vestibular physiology is the fact that many research workers are clinicians, living under the constant pressure of their patient's demands. This is a disadvantage when it comes to writing handbooks, but an advantage for the pa tient, since research is guided by clinical practice and can be quickly applied. Modern methods, such as recording from single nerve units and the correlation of electrophysiological and psychophysical data, have greatly contributed to our knowledge, yet the study of lesions is still important, especially in the vestibular field.

Book Morphology of the Auditory and Vestibular Organs in Mammals with Emphasis on Marine Species

Download or read book Morphology of the Auditory and Vestibular Organs in Mammals with Emphasis on Marine Species written by Galina Solntseva and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-07-03 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph describes the directions of the structural evolution of the peripheral part of the auditory system in representatives of different ecological groups of mammals. Special attention is paid to the least studied orders of marine mammals (pinnipeds, cetaceans), being of great interest both with regards to the echolocating abilities in dolphins and the influence of the aquatic environment on the development of morphological adaptations in the structure of the outer, middle and inner ears. Undertaken for the first time, a comparative embryological study of the peripheral part of the auditory system in marine mammals allowed the author to reveal the developmental pattern of the auditory and equilibrium organs in animals with a different auditory specialization. The influence of ecological factors on the adaptive trait development in the structural organization of the outer, middle and inner ears in semi-aquatic and aquatic species is discussed. The book is illustrated with a large number of high-quality micro-photos.
