Book In the Suicide s Library

Download or read book In the Suicide s Library written by Tim Bowling and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the hustle and bustle of modern life, the responsibilities of marriage and parenting, and the weight of middle-age get Tim Bowling down, he heads for a bookshelf in search of the solace books and reading can provide. But can the cure become the poison? One day, alone in the Modern Literature stacks of a university library, Bowling opens a tattered copy of Wallace Stevens’s poetry collection Ideas of Order and, on the front flyleaf, finds the elegant ownership signature of Weldon Kees–an obscure American poet, painter, photographer, filmmaker and musician who vanished mysteriously in 1955, an apparent suicide off the Golden Gate Bridge. So begins Bowling’s strange eight-month quest into American literature of the 1940s and ’50s and the world of book collecting, a journey branching into a wealth of subjects ranging from the relationship between fathers and daughters, suicide, masculinity, the Internet, the history of printing, bibliomania and the strange effects of midlife and obsession on an otherwise rational mind. Through it all, Bowling faces two central questions: the one that Weldon Kees put to his friend, Pauline Kael, on the day before he vanished–"What keeps you going?"–and, perhaps even more important, is it ever acceptable to steal a book for your own collection?

Book On Suicide Bombing

    Book Details:
  • Author : Talal Asad
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 2007-05-11
  • ISBN : 0231511973
  • Pages : 138 pages

Download or read book On Suicide Bombing written by Talal Asad and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2007-05-11 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like many people in America and around the world, Talal Asad experienced the events of September 11, 2001, largely through the media and the emotional response of others. For many non-Muslims, "the suicide bomber" quickly became the icon of "an Islamic culture of death" a conceptual leap that struck Asad as problematic. Is there a "religiously-motivated terrorism?" If so, how does it differ from other cruelties? What makes its motivation "religious"? Where does it stand in relation to other forms of collective violence? Drawing on his extensive scholarship in the study of secular and religious traditions as well as his understanding of social, political, and anthropological theory and research, Asad questions Western assumptions regarding death and killing. He scrutinizes the idea of a "clash of civilizations," the claim that "Islamic jihadism" is the essence of modern terror, and the arguments put forward by liberals to justify war in our time. He critically engages with a range of explanations of suicide terrorism, exploring many writers' preoccupation with the motives of perpetrators. In conclusion, Asad examines our emotional response to suicide (including suicide terrorism) and the horror it invokes. On Suicide Bombing is an original and provocative analysis critiquing the work of intellectuals from both the left and the right. Though fighting evil is an old concept, it has found new and disturbing expressions in our contemporary "war on terror." For Asad, it is critical that we remain aware of the forces shaping the discourse surrounding this mode of violence, and by questioning our assumptions about morally good and morally evil ways of killing, he illuminates the fragile contradictions that are a part of our modern subjectivity.

Book The Solitary Vice

Download or read book The Solitary Vice written by Mikita Brottman and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2008-02-28 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mikita Brottman wonders, just why is reading so great? It's a solitary practice, one that takes away from time that could be spent developing important social networking skills. Reading's not required for health, happiness, or a loving family. And, if reading is so important, why are catchy slogans like "Reading Changes Lives" and "Champions Read" needed to hammer the point home? Fearlessly tackling the notion that nonreaders are doomed to lives of despair and mental decay, Brottman makes the case that the value of reading lies not in its ability to ward off Alzheimer's or that it's a pleasant hobby. Rather, she argues that like that other well–known, solitary vice, masturbation, reading is ultimately not an act of pleasure but a tool for self–exploration, one that allows people to see the world through the eyes of others and lets them travel deep into the darkness of the human condition.

Book Suicide Squad The Rebirth Deluxe Edition Book 2

Download or read book Suicide Squad The Rebirth Deluxe Edition Book 2 written by Rob Williams and published by DC Comics. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ThereÕs something rotten in Belle Reve Penitentiary, and itÕs not just the swamp water leaking into the basement. Someone in the Suicide Squad has turned traitor, leaving AmericaÕs deadliest super-team open to attack from a vast international conspiracy bent on destroying everything that Task Force X director Amanda Waller has built. Considering that ÒThe WallÓ relies less on loyalty and trust and more on brain-implanted bombs to control her crew of conscripts, finding the culprit is going to be a tall order. Any one of the rogues in this gallery-including Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, Enchantress and Killer Croc-would almost certainly climb over a pile of their teammatesÕ corpses for the chance to escape. But even when sheÕs down for the count, Waller has a few aces up her sleeve, including 1) the deranged Kryptonian war criminal, General Zod, and 2) her own unequaled, bloody-minded ruthlessness. Bending Zod to her will, however, means striking a bargain with one of SupermanÕs deadliest enemies-and one of the only people on the planet smarter and more tenacious than Waller herself. But no matter how powerful the leverage she finds to use against him, in the end Zod kneels for no one. Will WallerÕs plan to make this living weapon of mass destruction a full-fledged member of the Suicide Squad live up to its enormous potential? Or will it literally and figuratively blow up in her face? Acclaimed author Rob Williams is joined by artists John Romita Jr., Tony S. Daniel, Riley Rossmo, Giuseppe Cafaro and Stjepan Sejic in Suicide Squad: Rebirth Deluxe Edition Book 2. Collects Suicide Squad #9-20 as well as the one-shot Suicide Squad Special: War Crimes, written by the SquadÕs own original gangster, John Ostrander!

Book Why People Die by Suicide

Download or read book Why People Die by Suicide written by Thomas Joiner and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the wake of a suicide, the most troubling questions are invariably the most difficult to answer: How could we have known? What could we have done? And always, unremittingly: Why? Written by a clinical psychologist whose own life has been touched by suicide, this book offers the clearest account ever given of why some people choose to die. Drawing on extensive clinical and epidemiological evidence, as well as personal experience, Thomas Joiner brings a comprehensive understanding to seemingly incomprehensible behavior. Among the many people who have considered, attempted, or died by suicide, he finds three factors that mark those most at risk of death: the feeling of being a burden on loved ones; the sense of isolation; and, chillingly, the learned ability to hurt oneself. Joiner tests his theory against diverse facts taken from clinical anecdotes, history, literature, popular culture, anthropology, epidemiology, genetics, and neurobiology--facts about suicide rates among men and women; white and African-American men; anorexics, athletes, prostitutes, and physicians; members of cults, sports fans, and citizens of nations in crisis. The result is the most coherent and persuasive explanation ever given of why and how people overcome life's strongest instinct, self-preservation. Joiner's is a work that makes sense of the bewildering array of statistics and stories surrounding suicidal behavior; at the same time, it offers insight, guidance, and essential information to clinicians, scientists, and health practitioners, and to anyone whose life has been affected by suicide.

Book Suicidal

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jesse Bering
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2020-10-23
  • ISBN : 022675555X
  • Pages : 286 pages

Download or read book Suicidal written by Jesse Bering and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2020-10-23 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For much of his thirties, Jesse Bering thought he was probably going to kill himself. He was a successful psychologist and writer, with books to his name and bylines in major magazines. But none of that mattered. The impulse to take his own life remained. At times it felt all but inescapable. Bering survived. And in addition to relief, the fading of his suicidal thoughts brought curiosity. Where had they come from? Would they return? Is the suicidal impulse found in other animals? Or is our vulnerability to suicide a uniquely human evolutionary development? In Suicidal, Bering answers all these questions and more, taking us through the science and psychology of suicide, revealing its cognitive secrets and the subtle tricks our minds play on us when we’re easy emotional prey. Scientific studies, personal stories, and remarkable cross-species comparisons come together to help readers critically analyze their own doomsday thoughts while gaining broad insight into a problem that, tragically, will most likely touch all of us at some point in our lives. But while the subject is certainly a heavy one, Bering’s touch is light. Having been through this himself, he knows that sometimes the most effective response to our darkest moments is a gentle humor, one that, while not denying the seriousness of suffering, at the same time acknowledges our complicated, flawed, and yet precious existence. Authoritative, accessible, personal, profound—there’s never been a book on suicide like this. It will help you understand yourself and your loved ones, and it will change the way you think about this most vexing of human problems.
