Book In The Shadow of Mount Sinai

Download or read book In The Shadow of Mount Sinai written by Peter Sloterdijk and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this short book Peter Sloterdijk clarifies his views on religion and its role in pre-modern and modern societies. He begins by returning to the Mount Sinai episode in the Book of Exodus, where he identifies the emergence of what he calls the Sinai Schema. At the core of monotheism is the logic of belonging to a community of confession, of being a true believer - this is what Sloterdijk calls the Sinai Schema. To be a member of a people means that you submit to the beliefs of the community just as you submit to its language. Monotheism is predicated on the logic of one God who demands your utmost loyalty. Hence at the core of monotheism is also the fear of apotheosis, of heresy, of heterodoxy. So monotheism is associated first and foremost with a certain kind of internal violence Ð namely, a violence against those who violate their membership through a break in loyalty and trust. On the basis of this analysis of the inner logic of monotheism, Sloterdijk retraces its historical legacy and shows how this account enables us to understand why we react so nervously today to all forms of fundamentalism - whether that of radical Islamists, the Catholic Pius Brotherhood or evangelical sects in the USA

Sinai, upon which rests the fiery glowing Cloud containing the shekinah glory of God. When a delivery goes horribly wrong, Shira finds herself bound to a man who betrayed her, the caretaker of three young children, and the target of a vengeful woman whose husband was killed by Shira's people, the Levites. As contention between the Hebrew tribes and the foreigners fans the flames of another dangerous rebellion, Shira will come face-to-face with the heartbreak of her past that she has kept hidden for so long. Book Stress and Freedom

  • Author : Peter Sloterdijk
  • Publisher : John Wiley & Sons

Download or read book Stress and Freedom written by Peter Sloterdijk and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this short book Peter Sloterdijk offers a genealogy of the concept of freedom from Ancient Greece to the present day. This genealogy is part of a broader theory of the large political body, according to which Sloterdijk argues that political communities arise in response to a form of anxiety or stress. Through a highly original reading of Rousseaus late Reveries of a Solitary Walker, Sloterdijk shows that, for Rousseau, the modern subject emerges as a subject free of all stress, unburdened by the cares of the world. Most of modern philosophy, and above all German Idealism, is an attempt to reign back Rousseaus useless and anarchical subject and anchor it in the cares of the world, in the task of having to produce both the world and itself. In the light of this highly original account, Sloterdijk develops his own distinctive account of freedom, where freedom is conceptualized as the availability for the improbable. This important text, in which Sloterdijk develops his account of freedom and the modern subject, will be of great interest to students and scholars in philosophy and the humanities and to anyone interested in contemporary philosophy and critical theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Believers know that when we die we enter heaven and will spend eternity there with God and the saints who have gone before us. But what actually happens in heaven? What are we going to be doing there? Won't it get boring at some point? According to Scripture, a large part of our experience of heaven will be a continual revealing of God's glory. Not just his glory in the moment, but during all of time. The mysteries of providence, the hidden movements of God throughout history, and the forgotten and unnoted works of even the most obscure of God's people will be unveiled so that we can see how wise, loving, gracious, and powerful our God is. And though we will experience perfection in heaven, we will never be omniscient, which means we will always be learning more about God's glory, inspiring us to return joyful praise and thanksgiving. If your vision of heaven has been limited to clouds and harps and angels, it's time to expand that view with the truth found in this biblically based look at the afterlife.

Download or read book The Mosaic Map of Madaba written by Herbert Donner and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 1992 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1880's dissension arose among the Muslim and Christian inhabitants of al-Karak, east of the Dead Sea. Up to that time the believers of both religions had lived peacefully together in the city. Problems arose and the Christians decicded to move. They were allowed to settle at Madaba. The government gave permission to build churches, but exclusively on those spots where churches had existed in Antiquity. The immigrants removed the debris from still partially visible foundation walls of the ancient churches. During this work they discovered in 1884 a marvelous mosaic map. It had been part of the floor of a large cathedral. The surviving fragments were roughly repaired and incorporated in the floor of the new St. George's church. It took nearly a hundred years and many admirers to have the map finally restored. This book is an introductory guide and can be a help to different kinds of people, such as visitors, students, and professors teaching first level archaeology, bible, and Umwelt. Numbers on the sketch included in the guide, refer the reader to appropriate information in the booklet. A colour reproduction of the map and a black/white sketch is included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Aclear-sighted, heartfelt, and humane story of the needless tests and treatments that cripple healthcare....as a guide to good medicine, it may help us get back to the essence of what good doctors do: be with patients in healing." —Samuel Shem, M.D., author of The House of God and The Spirit of the Place In Hippocrates’ Shadow, Dr. David H. Newman upends our understanding of the doctor-patient relationship and offers a new paradigm of honesty and communication. He sees a disregard for the healing power of the bond that originated with Hippocrates, and, ultimately, a disconnect between doctors and their oath to"do no harm." Exposing the patterns of secrecy and habit in modern medicine’s carefully protected subculture, Dr. Newman argues that doctors and patients cling to tradition and yield to demands for pills or tests. Citing fascinating studies that show why antibiotics for sore throats are almost always unnecessary; how cough syrup is rarely more effective than a sugar pill; and why CPR is violent, invasive—and almost always futile, this thought-provoking book cuts to the heart of what really works, and what doesn’t, in medicine.

Book excerpt: For Merini, it seems, the Holy Land is not the Promised Land of Canaan, but the forty years spent getting there, coming to terms with the terrifying atrocities of hell, the mystical ecstasies of paradise, and the "intense pain...of plunging back into the banality of daily living." Merini's wandering may be understood as the poet's search for the obscure laws which govern her visions, metamorphoses, and creations."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Unlocking Galatians Again

Download or read book Unlocking Galatians Again written by Clarence Reyneveld and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2008-10 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlocking Galatians Again is a verse-by-verse journey through Galatians. Like an underground cavern it has impressive chambers. Some hidden chambers will need to be opened and explored. Like the sun, St. Paul's epistle to the Galatians shines forth with light. During Luther's time it pierced the darkness. History shows us that when its light grows dim, God's people become like a wilted flower. When its light grows bright, we become like a thriving plant. It teaches us how to walk by faith by telling us where to focus our faith. Translation decisions can sometimes hinder some of its light from shining. For the Christian, a fresh discovery of Galatians can cause a burst of renewal. For the Pastor, it may change the way we preach and care for the spiritual needs of others. Walk with Luther through this cavern. You will discover spiritually impressive sights which he experienced while traveling through Galatians. After being ordained in 1987, Chaplain Clarence Reyneveld served as a Pastor in Illinois, Michigan, and Washington State. Since 1999 he has been involved in a television ministry, producing and presenting Bible Study programs which are aired in many homes mainly in Michigan. His unique blend of training and spiritual involvement gives him important qualifications to write this book.
