Book In the Shade of an Acacia Tree

Download or read book In the Shade of an Acacia Tree written by Frank L. Lambrecht and published by American Philosophical Society. This book was released on 1991 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Frank Lambrecht arrived in Africa in 1945 he came with a 3 years' contract with the Congo Red Cross. What he found in the Belgian Congo was an old colonial system steeped in its traditions right down to the garb colonials wore & the separate class structure for Europeans & natives. When he left 14 years later Africa was on the verge of divesting itself of foreign rule & influence. Lambrecht's story is of the beauty of Africa & its people as well as a description of the many diseases that decimated its populations. His responsibility in the beginning, with a diploma in tropical medicine, was to care for the lepers. But it was on the tsetse fly that Lambrecht concentrated most of his research. The book describes his attempts to capture tsetse fly species & then to train his native staff to help him in his research. A fascinating glimpse into the earlier stages of public health in the 20th century, through the diaries & letters of a dedicated medical scientist. Illustrations.

Download or read book The Mother and Child Project written by Zondervan, and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2015-03-31 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dozens of influential leaders have heard the pleas of mothers and children in developing countries. Raising their voices to inspire a movement to increase healthy pregnancies and lower death rates, Melinda Gates, Kay Warren, Bill Frist, Kimberly Williams Paisley, Michael W. Smith and more speak out about why people of faith must get involved in The Mother and Child Project: Raising Our Voices for Health and Hope. Almost 287,000 women die each year because of pregnancy and birth complications. Many orphans are left behind in the wake of this tragedy, and without a mother, many of those children die as well. If only enough people knew. We have the resources to prevent this crisis, but we must take action. Fortunately, Hope Through Healing Hands, a nonprofit organization promoting awareness for healthy mothers and children worldwide, is already spreading the word. Not only can we save lives, reduce abortions, and decrease death rates, but also we can help build healthier, thriving families and bring stability and sustainability to families, communities and nations. The question is, will you join them?

Book Discovering the Geology of Baja California

Download or read book Discovering the Geology of Baja California written by Markes E. Johnson and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baja California: wild, desolate, and a treasure-house of geological wonders. Along its ancient shorelines, careful observers can learn much about how the Gulf of California came into existence and what the future of the Baja California peninsula might be. For those who wish to unlock the mysteries of Baja California, geologist Markes Johnson offers the key. He has taken a body of technical research on the geology and paleontology of the region and made it accessible in plain language for anyone who visits the peninsula, whether for study or recreation. His book teaches general concepts in coastal geomorphology and tectonics, as well as the basic geological and natural history of the Gulf of California, in a conversive, intellectually stimulating fashion. Johnson's guide takes the form of six day-long hikes in the area of Punta Chivato on the east coast of the southern Baja California peninsula. Punta Chivato is presented as a microcosm of the entire region; it can enable visitors to better understand major themes in the natural history of the Gulf of California and its geological past. All of the hikes begin at the southeast corner of the Punta Chivato promontory and loop out in different directions. Each circuit is designed to minimize overlap with adjacent hikes and to maximize the visitor's exposure to instructive variations in the landscape. Each chapter features additional reflections on a geologist of another time and place who has advanced the field in a way that elucidates the material covered in that chapter. Through these asides, readers will learn the basic lessons about how geologists read the secrets hidden in landscapes. Discovering the Geology of Baja California invites visitors to these shores to explore not only rocks and fossils but also the continuum of past ecosystems with the ecology of the present. It offers both an unparalleled guide to a remote area and a new understanding of life caught in an endless cycle of change.
