Download or read book Extractive Industries and Sustainable Development written by Andrés Liebenthal and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World Bank Group (WBG) has the potential to improve the contribution of extractive industries (EI) to sustainable development and poverty reduction. However, this report by the WBG's operations evaluation departments finds that although its EI projects have produced positive economic and financial results, it has not been successful in ensuring compliance to environmental and social safeguards. The paper examines the World Bank, the International Finance Corporation and Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency, to assess their performance in moving away from a focus on economic benefits towards sustainable development, addressing the governance challenges associated with resource-rich countries, and mitigating environmental and social costs of the extractive industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first case is historically the most important case of private mineral governance outside the United States. Comparing British coal and American oil reveals the political circumstances that explain the collapse of this structure in the former case and its survival in the latter. Comparing both with Mexican oil brings in the international political dimension. It also finds surprising parallels between the collapse of private mineral governance in conservative Britain and revolutionary Mexico.

Download or read book The Political Economy of Institutional Change in the Electricity Supply Industry written by Carlos Rufin and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through a variety of analytical lenses - formal modeling, econometrics and case study comparisons - Carlos Rufín fills a gap in the political economy of second-wave, or microeconomic, reforms around the world. More specifically, he does so in the context of the electricity supply industry, where such reforms have been as problematic as they have been widespread. The author shows that ideological considerations and bargaining over the distribution of economic rents accruing from certain institutional arrangements are powerful shapers of institutional change. At the same time, the legacy of the past does not appear to have a clear or systematic effect on the direction of second-wave reforms that seek to transform existing economic institutions. If distributional conflicts can be resolved, these conclusions provide grounds for optimism about the ability to create new institutions even in countries where little favorable precedent exists.
