"I would dearly like to see your great lady mother," said Meta one day, about two weeks after their first earnest conversation. "You may one day," said Claude, thoughtfully. "What? she may come here?-here in your ship? Is she very, very proud? She might not deign to speak to a sailor's daughter," she added. "Oh yes, dear Meta," exclaimed Claude, with enthusiasm; "she would speak to you. She would thank you-she would bless you for having saved the life of her only son." "My aunts did that; not I," said innocent Meta. "No, Meta, no; but you, and you alone, saved my worthless life-worthless to all but my mother."[...]".

Book Bernard Shaw s Book Reviews

Download or read book Bernard Shaw s Book Reviews written by Brian Tyson and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2008-01-31 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These hitherto uncollected book reviews of Shaw--his first journalistic efforts--reveal much not only about the writer but also the culture of the time in which he lived. Between 1885 and 1888, Bernard Shaw published 111 book reviews in the Pall Mall Gazette. In spite of their importance as the first regular journalism Shaw wrote and the fact that the books (fiction, nonfiction, plays, and poetry) he read during these years must have formed the nucleus of his permanent library, the reviews have never before been analyzed in connection with Shaw's work. Brian Tyson has assembled the book reviews, complete with the books' titles, authors, and a brief biography of each author, including any comments Shaw made about the review, and has placed them in historical context, elucidating any interesting, difficult, or obscure references. Tyson's critical introduction places the reviews in the context of Shaw's work and Victorian society. The reviews are often characterized by the wit and brilliance that we associate with the later Shaw, shedding light on his development as a writer at his most formative stage. Regardless of the merits of the material Shaw was reviewing, it is amusing and enlightening to follow him down to the wandering tributaries of Late Victorian fiction and poetry, which reveal as much about Shaw as they do about the preoccupations and prejudices of the average reader of the day.

Not only is he very intelligent, he has something most of us wish we had. You can't put your finger on it, but he makes you believe he possesses some of all that is good in the world and is willing to share it with everyone, no strings attached. Not only is he the top recruit of his class but is willing to accept an extremely hazardous mission even though his Special Ops training is cut short. Through his ingenuity and the help of an Aleut Shaman, he foils a Japanese plot to terrorize the Aleutians Islands and the U. S. West Coast and force America into an early peace treaty which would give Japan control of most of the Pacific and Indonesia. Matt also discovers that the Japanese have a number of Aleut women captives on the island, whom they plan to kill when they leave Luta Island. He realizes that he has no choice but to help them escape their Japanese captors.

Book Ethology and Behavioral Ecology of Sea Otters and Polar Bears

Download or read book Ethology and Behavioral Ecology of Sea Otters and Polar Bears written by Randall W. Davis and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-03 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sea otters and polar bears are carnivorous marine mammals that still resemble their terrestrial ancestors. Compared with Cetacea (whales and dolphins), Sirenia (dugongs and manatees), and Pinnipedia (seals, sea lions, and walrus), they are less adapted for an aquatic life and the most recently evolved among marine mammals. Sea otters are amphibious but seldom come ashore, and polar bears primarily occur on sea ice or along the shore. When at sea, both species spend most of their time swimming at the surface or making short, shallow dives when foraging or pursuing prey. Indeed, polar bears rarely pursue seals in water. Nevertheless, polar bears are powerful swimmers and will stalk seals from the water. As with many other large carnivores, they are solitary hunters. Although sea otters are gregarious and form aggregations at sea called rafts, they are primarily asocial. Except during mating, the principal interaction among sea otters occurs between a female and offspring during the six-month dependency period. In large carnivores (e.g., wolves and lions) that feed on ungulates, sociality and cooperation are favored because of the need to capture large prey and defend carcasses. Polar bears, which are the largest terrestrial carnivore, are solitary hunters of seals and are neither gregarious nor social. Males and females briefly associate during courtship and mating. During this time, males aggressively compete for females. At other times, males generally avoid each other except for aggregations of males that form while summering on land, and females with cubs avoid males, which are known for infanticide. As with sea otters, the interaction of polar bears outside of mating occurs between a female and her offspring during the 2-3 year dependency period. This interaction is critically important when altricial cubs are born in the winter den. This book provides new insight into the ethology and behavioral ecology of sea otters and polar bears. Each chapter reviews the discoveries of previous studies and integrates recent research using new techniques and technology. The authors also address historic and current anthropogenic challenges for their survival as climate change alters entire marine ecosystems.
