Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foxe's Book of Martyrs: A Complete and Authentic Account of the Lives, Sufferings, and Triumphant Deaths of the Primitive and Protestant Martyrs, in All Parts of the World; With Notes, Comments and Illustrations Foxu's martyrs are among our earliest recollections; and their spirit-stirring incidents rivetted our eyes to their pages in our earliest childhood. Here we see the great things that faith can do, and the great things that faith can suffer. Here we behold, in fact, what Bunyan has so admirably described in fiction; here is Faithful again suffering and dying; here are graphically described the reacting in all parts of the world, and in our own country in particular, of the awful tragedies of Jerusalem, in which the Savio of men was put to death, and the proto-martyr Stephen followed his holy example, dying by wicked hands, as a witness to the truth. Here in particular are seen anew the men of modern ages of whom the world was not worthy, who loved not their lives unto the death, and whose cry mingles with that of the souls of them that were slain for the word of God and for the testimony which they held: How long, 0 Lord, holy and true, dost not thou judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth? These are they arrayed in white robes; these are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Here is the patience of the saints, showing the influence of pure Christianity upon the mind, and the triumphs of the real believer over the world. These sufferers truly believed the word of God, and received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth the word of God, which effectually worketh in them that believe. To them, houses and lands, wealth and honours, friends and relations, not even the dearest ties on earth, nor life itself, were of any estimation when set in competition with their love to the Saviour; and they practically illustrated in their end, the doctrine of their Divine Master, He that loveth father or mother more than me, is not worthy of me while they now reap the reward promised by Him who is faithful and true. And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or chil dren, or lands, for my name's sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life, Matt. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the Toils: Or Martyrs of the Latter Days It was a cloudy, chilly evening in May, such as often follows a day of the brightest sunshine in our uncertain climate. The wind roughly shook the tender leaves of the young birches and maples, and moaned like an Autumn blast among the pines and hemlocks on the hill. The whole landscape looked colorless and cheerless under the dull gray sky, but in the foreground ahuman habitation lent to the picture something of the warmth of the life within. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mementoes of the English Martyrs and Confessors: For Every Day in the Year Considering the ubiquity and cunning of both private informers and Government spies, it may seem strange how the missionaries found even a temporary shelter on landing in England, but this was supplied to them by the Catholic laity without thought Of personal risk. Harbouring priests was always regarded as felony and Often punished by death, yet the cottages and shops of the poorer classes and the country-houses of the gentry were ever open to the missioner. Without the welcome hospitality and services of the laity, the work of the Apostolate would have been practically impossible. Book Cross and Crown

Download or read book Cross and Crown written by Mrs. Bryson and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cross and Crown: Stories of the Chinese Martyrs when I was at home on furlough, and met many of the young people who will, I hope, read these pages, the Rev. Arnold Thomas, of Bristol, and many other ministers and Christian workers, told me they thought the heroic deaths and sufferings, for Jesus sake, of so many Chinese converts ought to be put on record. The story, they said, was a legacy to the church universal, which should not be lost, but should be treasured right down the ages, like the record of the persecutions of pagan Rome. No costly memorials have been erected above their graves; many of the martyrs never even received burial, their ashes being thrown upon the winds; but their memory will never die in the land of their birth so long as the Christian Church grows and thrives in Chinese soil. I have only had space for a very few stories, though they could be multiplied more than ten times over. And I have written only of our London Mission Christians (with the exception of one or two cases which are specially mentioned in the chapter - "How the Youth of China Died for Jesus"), as I thought these would be specially interesting to the young people for whom this book is prepared. Book Living Martyrs in Late Antiquity and Beyond

Download or read book Living Martyrs in Late Antiquity and Beyond written by Diane Shane Fruchtman and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-02-01 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book demonstrates that living martyrdom was an important spiritual aspiration in the late antique Latin west and argues that, consequently, attempts to define, study, or locate martyrdom must move away from conceptualizations that require or center on death. After an introduction that traces the persistence of "living martyrs" as real objects of spiritual devotion and emulation across the span of Christian history and discusses why such martyrs have been overlooked, the book focuses on three significant authors from the late ancient Latin west for whom martyrdom did not require death: the Spanish poet Prudentius (c. 348–413), the senator-turned-ascetic Paulinus of Nola (353–431), and the influential North African bishop Augustine of Hippo (354–430). Through historically and literarily contextualized close readings of their work, this book shows that each of these three authors attempted to create a new paradigm of martyrdom focused on living, rather than dying, for God. By focusing on these living martyrs, we are able to see more clearly the aspirations and agendas of those who promoted them as martyrs and how their martyrological discourse illuminates the variety of ways that martyrdom is and can be mobilized (in any era) to construct new, community-creating worldviews. Living Martyrs in Late Antiquity and Beyond is an important resource for historians of Christianity, scholars of religious studies, and anyone interested in exploring or understanding martyrological discourse. Download or read book The Blood Of The Martyrs written by Naomi Mitchison and published by Canongate Books. This book was released on 2010-07-01 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduced by Donald Smith. Set in Rome during Nero’s reign of terror, The Blood of the Martyrs is a disciplined historical novel tracing the destruction of one cell of the early church. With a cast of slaves, ordinary Roman people, exiles and entertainers, it is thorough in its historical interpretation and in its determination to make the past accessible and readable. Written in 1938-9, the novel contains many symbolic parallels to the rise of European fascism in the 1930s and the desperate plight of persecuted minorities such as the Jews and the left-wing activists with whom Naomi Mitchison personally campaigned at the time. With the invasion of Britain a real possibility, she felt compelled to write a testament to the power of human solidarity which, even faced with death, can overcome the worst that human evil can achieve. The Blood of the Martyrs is the least autobiographical of Mitchison’s major works of fiction, yet, with its implicit credo, is her most passionately self-revealing. ‘ . . . when a novelist is historically faithful in these treacherous waters of the human psyche, the results are tremendous. As a twentieth-century woman, it no doubt hurt Naomi Mitchison a good deal to describe the savagery of the early Christian persecution in The Blood of the Martyrs . . . But it is the pain that gives the history its lifeblood. The imagination that is a novelist’s fuel must be harnessed to serve history as history was, not as anyone wishes it had been.’ Joanna Trollope

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The China Martyrs of 1900: A Complete Roll of the Christian Heroes Martyred in China in 1900 With Narratives of Survivors As the China Inland Mission has the largest missionary staff in the eighteen provinces of China, it naturally follows that the heaviest losses fell upon that body. In order, therefore, to make the picture complete, the writer has availed himself of the liberty, kindly granted by Rev. J. W. Stevenson, the director of that Mission in Shanghai, and by the Home authorities of the Mission, to make what use he pleased of the books and pamphlets issued by the members of the Mission. He has fully availed himself of this permission; other friends have also generously assisted by writing special articles for this volume, or placing their productions at his disposal for the purpose intended, and for these the writer offers his best thanks.
