Book The Song of Louise in the Morning

Download or read book The Song of Louise in the Morning written by Patricia Joudry and published by Dramatists Play Service, Inc.. This book was released on 1960 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE STORY: Louise married Stanley years before, more in gratitude than in love, after he had been badly injured in saving her life in a car accident. Stanley, in turn, is psychotically obsessed with a smothering love for his wife, and has become a compulsive liar, intent on making himself the center of Louise's universe. She is drawn away from contact with her family when her brother is accidentally killed in a quarrel with Stanley. When their little boy is electrocuted on his third birthday by a live wire on the electric train Stanley had given him as a present, Louise is thrown into a state of shock. Stanley quits a promising job and a chance of promotion to stay by her side and nurse her. As the play opens, she has a job as nurse to someone else's little boy, and her love for this child has blocked out the pain of her own loss. But Stanley, fearing her attachment for the child has grown too strong, comes home that evening with the news that he had been promoted to manager of a branch store in Australia. Louise is heartbroken at having to leave the boy. The day they are to sail, she learns that Stanley's story is a lie, that in reality he has accepted a position at a much lower salary. Angrily, she confronts him with the truth and threatens to leave him. Then, in a sudden flash of understanding she realizes that all those accidents have not been accidents, and she runs out. What follows is a tragic and spine-tingling ending.

Book excerpt: The first part in an epic historical trilogy - The Estonian answer to Wolf Hall - by the nation's greatest modern writer Jaan Kross's trilogy dramatises the life of the renowned Livonian Chronicler Balthasar Russow, whose greatest work described the effects of the Livonian War on the peasantry of what is now Estonia. Like Hilary Mantel's Thomas Cromwell, Russow is a diamond in the rough, a thoroughly modern man in an Early Modern world, rising from humble origins to greatness through wit and learning alone. As Livonia is used as a political football by the warring powers of Russia, Sweden, Poland and Lithuania, he continues to climb the greasy pole of power and influence. Even as a boy, Russow has the happy knack of being in the right place and saying the right thing at the right time. He is equally at home acting as friend and confidante to his ambitious patron and as champion for his humble rural relatives. Can anything halt his vertiginous rise? Like most young men he is prey to temptations of the flesh . . .

Book The Contemporary Museum

Download or read book The Contemporary Museum written by Simon Knell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-11 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Contemporary Museum issues a challenge to those who view the museum as an artefact of history, constrained in its outlook as much by professional, institutional and disciplinary creed, as by the collections it accumulated in the distant past. Denying that the museum can locate its purpose in the pursuit of tradition or in idealistic speculation about the future, the book asserts that this can only be found through an ongoing and proactive negotiation with the present: the contemporary. This volume is not concerned with any present, but with the peculiar circumstances of what it refers to as the ‘global contemporary’ – the sense of living in a globally connected world that is preoccupied with the contemporary. To situate the museum in this world of real and immediate need and action, beyond the reach of history, the book argues, is to empower it to challenge existing dogmas and inequalities and sweep aside old hierarchies. As a result, fundamental questions need to be asked about such things as the museum’s relationship to global time and space, to systems and technologies of knowing, to ‘the life well lived’, to the movement and rights of people, and to the psychology, permanence and organisation of culture. Incorporating diverse viewpoints from around the world, The Contemporary Museum is a follow-up volume to Museum Revolutions and, as such, should be essential reading for students in the fields of museum and heritage studies, cultural studies, communication and media studies, art history and social policy. Academics and museum professionals will also find this book a source of inspiration.

Book excerpt: "The Old West collides with World War II." In Roy McShane's second installment of his trilogy, HWELTE, bomber pilot First Lieutenant Chuck Hewitt returns home wounded from Stalingrad, in 1943, to his parent's ranch at Flagstaff, Arizona. He's a broken man looking for answers-ultimately finding those answers in the extraordinary history of his white grandfather's and Navajo grandmother's struggle to forge a life together against all odds in the 1880s. Inspired by his grandparent's hardships, Chuck decides to get back in the war and transfers into fighters. He eventually winds up in England, in 1944, with the 354th Fighter Group-the first group to fly and fight over Europe in the new, revolutionary P-51 Mustang. Whereupon, after his initial mission escorting B-17s over Germany, Chuck makes a startling discovery about the common denominator fighter pilots and bomber pilots share: They are all condemned men living on death row. "...McShane's descriptions of the American West, and the air war in Europe during World War II, are the best I've ever read." -San Francisco Bay Guardian "The Old West collides with World War II. Strap in and hold on for the ride of your life..." -Los Angeles New Times "...a western, a war story, a flying story and a love story, McShane pulls them all together with exciting realism." -St. Louis Post-Dispatch HWELTE (whell-`tay) n.
