Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Guiana Shield is an ancient geological formation located in the northern part of South America, covering an area of one million square kilometres. Despite its hostile environment, it is home to many unusual and highly specialized plants and animals, which constitute a rich area of biodiversity. Chapters in this book include hydrology, nutrient cycling, forest phenology, insect-plant interactions, forest microclimate, plant distributions, forest dynamics and conservation and management of flora and fauna. It provides a comprehensive and detailed review of the ecology, biology and natural history of the forests of the area.

Book Lianas of the Guianas

Download or read book Lianas of the Guianas written by Bruce Hoffman and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lianas (woody vines) are iconic symbols of tropical forests around the world. These plants use the energetically expensive investment of trees in woody stems to gain relatively inexpensive access to the light-rich canopy. The evolution of a climbing habit has occurred in many unrelated plant groups using twining and clasping shoots or specialized structures such as tendrils, hooks, spines, adhesive roots, and internal stem anatomy. Lianas contribute significantly to tropical forest diversity (25-40% of species), carbon sequestration, biomass, plant-animal interactions and forest gap dynamics. Although they are often considered pests in commercial forestry, woody climbers are important to many traditional peoples as medicines, subsistence fibers and non-timber forest products. Largely due to their inaccessibility, lianas and other climbers remain among the most poorly documented lifeforms in the tropics. 0This book aims to facilitate learning and identification of woody climbers of the Guianas (Guyana, French Guiana, and Suriname) for specialists and non-specialists by using an image-rich format, common and scientific names, simplified botanical terminology, and character icon guides, and by describing ecology and uses.

Book Lost in a Rain Forest

Download or read book Lost in a Rain Forest written by Michael Burgan and published by Stranded!. This book was released on 2014-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In early 2007, Loic Pillois and Guilhem Nayral went on a 60-mile hike in the Amazon rain forest in French Guiana. Despite having a map and a compass, the two friends became hopelessly lost. They built fires, hoping to attract the attention of planes passing overhead, but their efforts didn't work. For weeks Loic and Guilhem survived by eating frogs, centipedes, turtles, and bird-eating spiders. Would the two men be able to find their way back to civilization before they died of starvation, dehydration, or an animal attack? Lost in a Rain Forest is a heart-stopping collection of true stories that dramatically describe what it's like to be lost and forced to survive in a rain forest. Captivating, first-person accounts of survivors include newlyweds lost in a Costa Rican jungle and a young woman who wandered through the Peruvian rain forest after surviving a plane crash. The book also includes general information about the world's rain forests and the incredible plants and animals that inhabit them. Large color photos, maps, and fact boxes enrich the exciting survival tales. Written in a narrative format, this book is sure to keep readers on the edge of their seats.

Book In the Guiana Forest

Download or read book In the Guiana Forest written by James Rodway and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the Guiana Forest: Studies of Nature in Relation to the Struggle for Life The tropics, i have often said, are biological head-quarters. It is not merely that there, and there alone, do you see life at its fullest, its fiercest, and its fieriest. It is not merely that there do you find the struggle for existence carried on with a wild energy which none can overlook, both among plants and animals. It is not merely that there trees, shrubs, and herbs, beasts, birds, and reptiles abound, with a richness and a variety unknown in more temperature regions. The tropics have a far deeper value for the biologist than all that. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
