This book was released on 2017-11-17 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Pilgrim Fathers, 1606-1623 as Told By, Themselves, Their Friends, and Their Enemies: Edited From the Original d104s What a strange thing it is, that hitherto there does not exist any adequate account, scientifically written but popular in form, of the Pilgrim Fathers. And this, although there has already grown up around their noble efforts, a considerable literature, through the incessant efforts Of American Scholars and Historical Societies° a literature that will no doubt continue to grow till the end of time. Crammed as this volume is with information on the subject, most of it Of paramount authority; it has not been found possible to bring the Pilgrim Story in it, to a later date than 1623. If that Story is to be continued, it must be in another similar volume; which would probably carry it on to the years 1628, or 1630. Book Chronicles

Download or read book Chronicles written by Alexander Young and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chronicles: Of the Pilgrim Fathers of the Colony of Plymouth, From 1602 to 1625 This volume will be found to contain an authentic History of the Pilgrim Fathers who planted the Colony of Plymouth, from their origin in John Robinson's congregation in 1602, to his death in 1625, written by themselves. Some account of the nature of these Chronicles, and of the circumstances which led to their compilation in this form, may not be unacceptable to the reader. It is well known to those who are familiar with the early history of New England, that William Bradford, the second governor of Plymouth, wrote a History of that People and Colony from 1602 to 1647, in 270 folio pages; which was used by Morton in compiling his Memorial, by Hutchinson in writing his History of Massachusetts, and by Prince in digesting his Annals of New England. Book Venturers for the Kingdom

Download or read book Venturers for the Kingdom written by H. G. Wood and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Venturers for the Kingdom: A Study in the History of the Pilgrim Fathers "Winslow's Relation" is particularly valuable for the light it throws on the dealings of the Pilgrim Fathers with the Indians. Professor E. Arber's book, The Story of the Pilgrim Fathers, 1606-1623 (Ward & Downey, Ltd., 1897), consists largely of well-selected extracts from original sources. It is, in fact, a source-book. Arber relied mainly on Bradford and Winslow, and he printed in full the very vivid diary of the first year's adventures and explorations, which is known as "Mourt's Journal or Relation." This was first published in 1622. Of other original authorities, the writings of John Robinson are most important, at least for the beginnings of the whole movement. An edition of The Works of John Robinson, the Pilgrim Father, by Robert Ashton, appeared in three volumes in 1851. It can only be obtained secondhand. This edition has been used in this book, and will be cited as Robinson i, ii, or iii. The works of John Smyth have now been collected in an admirable edition by Dr. W. T. Whitley (Camb. Univ. Press, 1915). There is also some original material, bearing on the early history of the Pilgrim Church in Dr. Burrage's two volumes on The Early English Dissenters (Camb. Univ. Press, 1912). Along with these should be mentioned the book on John Smyth, entitled Smith, the Se-Baptist and the Pilgrim Fathers, Helwys and Baptist Origins, by Walter H. Burgess (James Clarke & Co., 1911). Mr. Burgess had the good fortune to discover John Robinson's birthplace. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mayflower: And the Pilgrim Fathers The Pilgrim Fathers, as you know, were not men of Devon. Indeed the contrast between them and the famous Devonians of their time is marked and noteworthy. The great men of Devon, such as Walter Raleigh, Richard Grenville, Francis Drake, and John Hawkins, usually went forth for the express purpose of adventure, or conquest, or discovery, or for the acquisition of wealth. The Pilgrim Fathers went forth for none of these objects but, as the great English poet Milton says of them, they were faithful and free-born Englishmen and good Christians constrained to forsake their dearest homes, their friends and kindred, whom nothing but the wide ocean and the savage deserts of America could hide and shelter from the fury of the Bishops.
