Download or read book Two Kids Fate written by Margie KGR-Jones and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-05-26 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book I wanted to express the loneliness and love two children had for their parents and how they suffered very much in finding themselves and the courage they had to find their loved ones. The parts about the grandparents was the words my grandparents would say, and how my great-grandmother would be on Sundays in the pulpit with the preacher because she also had the calling to preach and would tell the preacher that he had preached enough and it was her time to preach, right in front of the congregation. We would just laugh so hard and run out of the little church and try to crack some hard black walnuts. My mother was a musician and played the piano in church; my step-father was a preacher, and he had two churches, so I also remember church times. The rest of the book is fictional.

Book The Making of American Catholicism

Download or read book The Making of American Catholicism written by Michael J. Pfeifer and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2021-01-12 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traces the development of Catholic cultures in the South, the Midwest, the West, and the Northeast, and their contribution to larger patterns of Catholicism in the United States Most histories of American Catholicism take a national focus, leading to a homogenization of American Catholicism that misses much of the local complexity that has marked how Catholicism developed differently in different parts of the country. Such histories often treat northeastern Catholicism, such as the Irish Catholicism of Boston, as if it reflects the full history and experience of Catholicism across the United States. The Making of American Catholicism argues that regional and transnational relationships have been central to the development of American Catholicism. The American Catholic experience has diverged significantly among regions; if we do not examine how it has taken shape in local cultures, we miss a lot. Exploring the history of Catholic cultures in New Orleans, Iowa, Wisconsin, Los Angeles, and New York City, the volume assesses the role of region in American Catholic history, carefully exploring the development of American Catholic cultures across the continental United States. Drawing on extensive archival research, The Making of American Catholicism argues that American Catholicism developed as transnational Catholics creatively adapted their devotional and ideological practices in particular American regional contexts. They emphasized notions of republicanism, individualistic capitalism, race, ethnicity, and gender, resulting in a unique form of Catholicism that dominates the United States today. The book offers close attention to race and racism in American Catholicism, including the historical experiences of African American and Latinx Catholics as well as Catholics of European descent.

Book excerpt: The signing of the Paris Peace Accords in 1973 signified the end of the Vietnam War. American personnel returned home and the 591 American prisoners held captive in North Vietnam were released. Still, 2,646 individuals did not come home. Thirty-seven of those missing in action were from Wisconsin. Their names appear on the largest object--a motorcycle (now part of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Collection)--ever left at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Using the recollections of the soldiers' families, friends and fellow servicemen, the author tells the story of each man's life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The imbibing country clubbers were tooting their New Years Eve miniature horns, prematurely. An elderly man at the adjoining table is obviously choking on an under chewed piece of steak, Jason hollers, “can you talk?” The gasping man shakes his head, “no!” The Heimlich maneuver fails. Jason yanks the tablecloth and the dishes crash to the floor. He lifts the cyanotic, gasping man to the table with his head extended over the edge. He remembers Dr Heifer’s words “The most important thing to remember in performing a tracheotomy is to extend the neck and the trachea will project forward.” He grabs a steak knife, makes an incision into the wind pipe below the voice box and inserts a horn as a make shift tracheotomy tube. With each breath, the tooting horn improves the color of the man from blue to pink and ushers in the New Year.
