Book excerpt: Welcome to Illusion Town on the colony world of Harmony—like Las Vegas on Earth, but way more weird. Living in this new, alien world doesn’t stop the settlers from trying to re-create what they’ve left behind. Case in point—weddings are still the highlight of any social calendar. But it’s the after-party that turns disastrous for Lucy Bell. Kidnapped and drugged as she leaves the party, she manages to escape—only to find herself lost in the mysterious, alien underground maze of glowing green tunnels beneath Illusion Town. She’s been surviving on determination and cold pizza, scavenged for her by a special dust bunny, when help finally shows up. Gabriel Jones is the Ghost Hunter sent to rescue her, but escaping the underground ruins isn’t the end of her troubles—it’s only the beginning. With no rational reason for her abduction, and her sole witness gone on another assignment for the Guild, whispers start circulating that Lucy made it all up. Soon her life unravels until she has nothing left but her pride. The last thing she expects is for Gabriel Jones to come back to town for her. The Lucy that Gabriel finds is not the same woman he rescued, the one who looked at him as if he were her hero. This Lucy is sharp, angry, and more than a little cynical—instead of awe, she treats him with extreme caution. But a killer is still hunting her, and there aren’t a lot of options when it comes to heroes. Despite her wariness, Gabriel is also the one person who believes Lucy—after all, he was there. He’s determined to help clear her reputation, no matter what it takes. And as the new Guild Boss, his word is law, even in the lawlessness of Illusion Town.

Book A Family Secret

Download or read book A Family Secret written by Harry Brooks and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2005-03-15 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Family Secret is a fast moving novel that takes the reader from the streets of South Philly to the backroom gambling joints of Atlantic City in the early forties to the most Mafia-infested, politically corrupt city in the world - Las Vegas. It is the story of two half brothers who each follow different career paths. One becomes a successful Las Vegas casino owner, while the other ends up in the Mafia. The author's use of sharp "street" dialogue makes the characters as real as a "royal flush." A Family Secret is a gritty sometime humorous story that keeps the reader wondering what will happen next. You will meet all kinds of interesting characters in the book. People like Fat Lenny, Little Pussey and Eddie "the hat" Weisberg, who is more like somebody's old grandfather than a "Jewish Gangster." The main character, Goldy, is the essence of every young man's dream. Handsome, rich and as cool as a winter night. And Bobby Cippolini, Goldy's half brother, a careless, cocky young Italian who answers only to the face he sees in the mirror. A Family Secret is a story about people as much as it is about gambling and the mob. It is a beguiling and sometime witty love story that keeps the reader in suspense until the very end. R E V I E W S! on Amazon.com Absolutely outstanding book! I found myself immersed in the characters' lives because of the author's incredible attention to detail. The characters were very well developed and it incorporated aspects of business, the underworld, and family in a realistic portrayal of Mafia life. The plot kept me guessing... I couldn't put it down! Very highly recommended as it is now one of my favorite books! - Stephanie Cohrac (Grand Rapids, MI) This book was one of a kind. A real pageturner!! It really paints a perfect picture on how life really was back then. A must read!! - A big fan, Jason Nissan The story takes you through a realistic portrayal of what it was like to be a wise guy in South Philly. The story flows well and the characters are well developed to give the reader a visualization of the story. The author is currently unknown, but won't be after people get a copy of this book. A must read! - Daniel Halpern (State College, PA) I was pleased to read a story that was true to life.No phony characters or make-belive ":wise guys".The author knew what he was doing A great read. Can see this as a movie. - Florida Mike "Mike the Man" (Florida)

Book A Young Soldier

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An intelligent and athletic young man from an upper-middle-class family and an affluent suburban town in New Jersey abruptly leaves home. At the age of nineteen, he winds up alone in Las Vegas for the winter. In order to bootstrap himself off the floor of the economy, he enlists in the U.S. Army infantry for the enlistment bonus, the promise of college funds, and an adventure. Over the next four years, the young man serves in uniform on three continents. Initially, the new soldier struggles for a year to measure up. Eventually, he becomes a good endurance athlete, a credible young man, and an effective soldier. The Spartan environment and the draconian discipline of the infantry unit impacts the youth. Alarmed by the debauchery around him, he responds by throwing himself into a rigorous self-improvement program. As a coping mechanism, he develops an intellectual philosophy uniquely suited to the infantry. After the familiarity of the army, getting out and pursuing his goal of attending college is a gut check he passes. The solo adventurer travels the Pacific Rim and Western Europe. Then he goes off to a state university in a small rural town. College is not the utopia the high-minded idealist expected. The new veteran is met with considerable hostility in the classroom and animosity on the campus. After four years in the infantry, the man has become very martial, machine-like, and ideological. Issues of identity are manifold. Unforseen readjustment problems manifest. In the isolation of the infantry battalion he has lost contact with the civilian world, and he cannot fathom the values, thinking, and the lifestyles of the students around him. The new civilian possesses few social skills and less knoledge of domestic life. He is a sort of idiot savant living in a world of book, ideas, and concept. Eventually, his mind bends, and his health breaks. Over the next years, the man endures a spiritual struggle to come to terms with his past, accept his present, and plan for an unexpected sort of future. This story explains the following questions: Where does an extremist come from? What forms the mid of an extremist? How is an extremist defused?
