Book In Situ Scanning Electron Microscopy in Materials Research

Download or read book In Situ Scanning Electron Microscopy in Materials Research written by Klaus Wetzig and published by Wiley-VCH. This book was released on 1995-05-09 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors of this book give an instructive survey of the latest advancements in Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). During the last two decades there has been a new stage in the development of scanning electron microscopes as they are equipped with special devices for in situ investigations. Thus a "microlab" now exists inside the electron microscope. Different in situ sample treatments, based on mechanical, thermal and electrical effects, as well as on surface modification by radiation and environmental interaction processes, can be used to quantitatively study reactions at solid surfaces under well-defined external conditions. The objects under investigation can be of many kinds: engineering materials, electrical and magnetic materials (as used in microelectronics), products of technical and chemical industries, minerals, forensic objects, textiles, pharmaceutical, biological and archaeological specimens.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In-Situ Transmission Electron Microscopy Experiments Design and execute cutting-edge experiments with transmission electron microscopy using this essential guide In-situ microscopy is a recently-discovered and rapidly-developing approach to transmission electron microscopy (TEM) that allows for the study of atomic and/or molecular changes and processes while they are in progress. Experimental specimens are subjected to stimuli that replicate near real-world conditions and their effects are observed at a previously unprecedented scale. Though in-situ microscopy is becoming an increasingly important approach to TEM, there are no current texts combining an up-to-date overview of this cutting-edge set of techniques with the experience of in-situ TEM professionals. In-Situ Transmission Electron Microscopy Experiments meets this need with a work that synthesizes the collective experience of myriad collaborators. It constitutes a comprehensive guide for planning and performing in-situ TEM measurements, incorporating both fundamental principles and novel techniques. Its combination of technical detail and practical how-to advice makes it an indispensable introduction to this area of research. In-Situ Transmission Electron Microscopy Experiments readers will also find: Coverage of the entire experimental process, from method selection to experiment design to measurement and data analysis Detailed treatment of multimodal and correlative microscopy, data processing and machine learning, and more Discussion of future challenges and opportunities facing this field of research In-Situ Transmission Electron Microscopy Experiments is essential for graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and early career researchers entering the field of in-situ TEM.

Book Ion Etching of Amorphous and Semicrystalline Fibers

Download or read book Ion Etching of Amorphous and Semicrystalline Fibers written by S. B. Warner and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ion etching of amorphous and semicrystalline polymeric or graphite fibers produces structures which can be observed in either the transmission electron microscope or the scanning electron microscope. The structures so produced have previously been identified as resulting from the etching process (artifacts), or as representing characteristics of the material, or both. The artifacts can be eliminated or minimized by rotating the sample during irradiation, using a low angle of incidence, and ensuring that the temperature of the sample surface remains low. When such precautions are used, amorphous fibers and semicrystalline fibers which are not oriented remain featureless after ion etching. Oriented semicrystalline fibers, however, develop a striated structure which is oriented perpendicular to the stretch direction. These transverse structural features reflect characteristic features of drawn fibers; but the relation between these features and the lamellar spacing is unclear.

Book Handbook of Sample Preparation for Scanning Electron Microscopy and X Ray Microanalysis

Download or read book Handbook of Sample Preparation for Scanning Electron Microscopy and X Ray Microanalysis written by Patrick Echlin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-04-14 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scanning electr on microscopy (SEM) and x-ray microanalysis can produce magnified images and in situ chemical information from virtually any type of specimen. The two instruments generally operate in a high vacuum and a very dry environment in order to produce the high energy beam of electrons needed for imaging and analysis. With a few notable exceptions, most specimens destined for study in the SEM are poor conductors and composed of beam sensitive light elements containing variable amounts of water. In the SEM, the imaging system depends on the specimen being sufficiently electrically conductive to ensure that the bulk of the incoming electrons go to ground. The formation of the image depends on collecting the different signals that are scattered as a consequence of the high energy beam interacting with the sample. Backscattered electrons and secondary electrons are generated within the primary beam-sample interactive volume and are the two principal signals used to form images. The backscattered electron coefficient ( ? ) increases with increasing atomic number of the specimen, whereas the secondary electron coefficient ( ? ) is relatively insensitive to atomic number. This fundamental diff- ence in the two signals can have an important effect on the way samples may need to be prepared. The analytical system depends on collecting the x-ray photons that are generated within the sample as a consequence of interaction with the same high energy beam of primary electrons used to produce images.

Book Electron Microscopy in Mineralogy

Download or read book Electron Microscopy in Mineralogy written by P.E. Champness and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last five years transmission electron microscopy (TEM) has added numerous important new data to mineralogy and has considerably changed its outlook. This is partly due to the fact that metallurgists and crystal physicists having solved most of the structural and crystallographic problems in metals have begun to show a widening interest in the much more complicated structures of minerals, and partly to recent progress in experimental techniques, mainly the availability of ion-thinning devices. While electron microscopists have become increasingly interested in minerals (judging from special symposia at recent meetings such as Fifth European Congress on Electron microscopy, Man chester 1972; Eight International Congress on Electron Microscopy, Canberra 1974) mineralogists have realized advantages of the new technique and applied it with increasing frequency. In an effort to coordinate the growing quantity of research, electron microscopy sessions have been included in meetings of mineralogists (e. g. Geological Society of America, Minneapolis, 1972, American Crystallographic Association, Berkeley, 1974). The tremendous response for the TEM symposium which H. -R. Wenk and G. Thomas organized at the Berkeley Conference of the American Crystallographic Association formed the basis for this book. It appeared useful at this stage to summarize the achievements of electron microscopy, scattered in many different journals in several different fields and present them to mineralogists. A group of participants as the Berkeley symposium formed an Editorial Committee and outlined the content of this book.

Book Reactive Ion Etching of InP Using Hydrocarbons

Download or read book Reactive Ion Etching of InP Using Hydrocarbons written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper deals with the development of an etch recipe for the etching of InP by Reactive ion etching (RIE), a vital process step in the fabrication of microstructures. RIE is a dry etching scheme, wherin effective pattern transfer can be achieved due to its inherent anisotropic characteristics for certain process conditions. RIE is preferred to other dry etching schemes since it is simple, robust and is widely used in industry. The main aim of our research is to design micromechanically tunable optical filters for wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems. In this system, transmission takes place in the second and third optical communication window, namely in the region of zero material dispersion (1300 nm) and minimum attenuation (1550 nm) respectively. InP based devices are widely used for this application since they are compatible with the above mentioned WDM transmission wavelengths. The key properties investigated in this thesis were the material etch rate, the selectivity of the material with res to the mask, the side wall steepness and the surface morphology. The examined process parameters have been the rf-power, the flow rate, the pressure inside the chamber, the substrate temperature and the various ratios of gas combinations. Improved values of etch rate and selectivity have been achieved with respect to past results by optimizing the process conditions. Etch rates as high as 120 nm/min have been achieved using CH4 / H2 with infinite values of selectivity for certain process parameters. Measurements have also been made on InP samples using the scanning electron microscope and the atomic force microscope for determining the side wall steepness and the roughness of the etched surface. Side wall slopes close to 90° and surface roughnesses below 0.4 nm (rms) have been achieved. The earlier reported problems of polymer deposition on top of the mask was strongly suppressed. In addition measurements have been carried out on various samples to establish pr.
