Book In Search of the Rainbow Power

Download or read book In Search of the Rainbow Power written by Harry Creevey and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2022-06-24 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have written a fantasy about a pair of elves setting out to carry on their parent’s work of making the best wands in the country. They have to travel far and wide to collect the ingredients for their wands. They seek opals for its rainbow colour, silver to give it strength, and water from the blue lake to mix with their own hidden spring water to activate its magic. Their two children travelled with them and like children everywhere, they are forever getting into difficulty. On one occasion they disappear into a painting and find they have to answer a riddle to escape. It was a trap set by the wizards. Later they are captured by Goblins and have to be rescued by a wombat who is a friend of the family. In their absence, an evil wizard comes to reside across from their farm where he attempts to learn the secret of their hidden spring. He is closely watched by small animals and birds who are friends of the elves. But being so small they can only watch as he discovers the whereabouts of the spring and sets a trap for the elves on their return. I feel this novel would suit children aged nine to twelve.

Book Can National Dialogue Break the Power of Terror in Burundi

Download or read book Can National Dialogue Break the Power of Terror in Burundi written by Zdenek Červenka and published by Nordic Africa Institute. This book was released on 1994 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban areas all over Africa, despite local and regional differences, have much in common : rapid population growth, more than half the population of large cities in squatter settlements, a public sector unable to provide basic services, and deteriorating environmental conditions. Africa's urban population is expected to in-crease from 210 million in 1990 to 340 million in 2000. The Nordic donor agencies have traditionally concentrated their development assistance in the fields of health, water supply and sanitation to rural areas. In a longer term perspective the authors see three main policy options for the development assistance in these fields: 1. continued concentration on rural programmes ; 2. continued strong support to rural development programmes, combined with an increased involvement in small and medium-sized towns; and 3. involvement in pure urban projects, also in large cities. They recommend that development efforts over the next decade should continue to give priority to rural development. In most sub-Saharan countries 70-90% of the population is rural. Even with current rapid urbanization rates this rural population will go on increasing for the next 30 years. Besides, rural Africa's health and hygiene problems are still largely unsolved: much remains to be done to increase the coverage, improve the functioning and generate sustainabil-ity of rural water supplies, most remains to be done on rural sanitation and virtually nothing has been done regarding control of disease vectors. Book Women and Power in Argentine Literature

Download or read book Women and Power in Argentine Literature written by Gwendolyn Díaz and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The astonishing talent of Argentine women writers belies the struggles they have faced—not merely as overlooked authors, but as women of conviction facing oppression. The patriarchal pressures of the Perón years, the terror of the Dirty War, and, more recently, the economic collapse that gripped the nation in 2001 created such repressive conditions that some writers, such as Luisa Valenzuela, left the country for long periods. Not surprisingly, power has become an inescapable theme in Argentine women's fiction, and this collection shows how the dynamics of power capture not only the political world but also the personal one. Whether their characters are politicians and peasants, torturers and victims, parents and children, or lovers male and female, each writer explores the effects of power as it is exercised by or against women. The fifteen writers chosen for Women and Power in Argentine Literature include famous names such as Valenzuela, as well as authors anthologized for the first time, most notably María Kodama, widow of Jorge Luis Borges. Each chapter begins with a "verbal portrait," editor Gwendolyn Díaz's personal impression of the author at ease, formed through hours of conversation and interviews. A biographical essay and critical commentary follow, with emphasis on the work included in this anthology. Díaz's interviews, translated from Spanish, and finally the stories themselves—only three of which have been previously published in English—complete the chapters. The extraordinary depth of these chapters reflects the nuanced, often controversial portrayals of power observed by Argentine women writers. Inspiring as well as insightful, Women and Power in Argentine Literature is ultimately about women who, in Díaz's words, "choose to speak their truth regardless of the consequences."

Book Knowledge and Power in Prehistoric Societies

Download or read book Knowledge and Power in Prehistoric Societies written by Lynne Kelly and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-05-19 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Lynne Kelly explores the role of formal knowledge systems in small-scale oral cultures in both historic and archaeological contexts. In the first part, she examines knowledge systems within historically recorded oral cultures, showing how the link between power and the control of knowledge is established. Analyzing the material mnemonic devices used by documented oral cultures, she demonstrates how early societies maintained a vast corpus of pragmatic information concerning animal behavior, plant properties, navigation, astronomy, genealogies, laws and trade agreements, among other matters. In the second part Kelly turns to the archaeological record of three sites, Chaco Canyon, Poverty Point and Stonehenge, offering new insights into the purpose of the monuments and associated decorated objects. This book demonstrates how an understanding of rational intellect, pragmatic knowledge and mnemonic technologies in prehistoric societies offers a new tool for analysis of monumental structures built by non-literate cultures.

Book Rainbow Warrior

Download or read book Rainbow Warrior written by Gilbert Baker and published by Chicago Review Press. This book was released on 2019-06-04 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1978, Harvey Milk asked Gilbert Baker to create a unifying symbol for the growing gay rights movement, and on June 25 of that year, Baker's Rainbow Flag debuted at San Francisco's Gay Liberation Day parade. Baker had no idea his creation would become an international emblem of freedom, forever cementing his place and importance in helping to define the modern LGBTQ+ movement. Rainbow Warrior is Baker's passionate personal chronicle, from a repressive childhood in 1950s Kansas to a harrowing stint in the US Army, and finally his arrival in San Francisco, where he bloomed as both a visual artist and social justice activist. His fascinating story weaves through the early years of the struggle for LGBTQ+ rights, where he worked closely with Milk, Cleve Jones, and the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. Baker continued his flag-making, street theater and activism through the Reagan years and the AIDS crisis. And in 1994, Baker spearheaded the effort to fabricate a mile-long Rainbow Flag—at the time, the world's longest—to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising in New York City. Gilbert and parade organizers battled with the newly elected Mayor Giuliani for the right to carry it up Fifth Avenue, past St. Patrick's Cathedral. Today, the Rainbow Flag has become a worldwide symbol of LGBTQ+ diversity and inclusiveness, and its rainbow hues have illuminated landmarks from the White House to the Eiffel Tower to the Sydney Opera House. Gilbert Baker often called himself the "Gay Betsy Ross," and readers of his colorful, irreverent and deeply personal memoir will find it difficult to disagree.
