Book A Scheme of Heaven The History of Astrology and the Search for our Destiny in Data

Download or read book A Scheme of Heaven The History of Astrology and the Search for our Destiny in Data written by Alexander Boxer and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2020-01-14 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An illuminating look at the surprising history and science of astrology, civilization’s first system of algorithms, from Babylon to the present day. Humans are pattern-matching creatures, and astrology is the universe’s grandest pattern-matching game. In this refreshing work of history and analysis, data scientist Alexander Boxer examines classical texts on astrology to expose its underlying scientific and mathematical framework. Astrology, he argues, was the ancient world’s most ambitious applied mathematics problem, a monumental data-analysis enterprise sustained by some of history’s most brilliant minds, from Ptolemy to al-Kindi to Kepler. Thousands of years ago, astrologers became the first to stumble upon the powerful storytelling possibilities inherent in numerical data. To correlate the configurations of the cosmos with our day-to-day lives, astrologers relied upon a “scheme of heaven,” or horoscope, showing the precise configuration of the planets at a particular instant in time as viewed from a particular place on Earth. Although recognized as pseudoscience today, horoscopes were once considered a cutting-edge scientific tool. Boxer teaches us how to read these esoteric charts—and appreciate the complex astronomical calculations needed to generate them—by diagramming how the heavens appeared at important moments in astrology’s history, from the assassination of Julius Caesar as viewed from Rome to the Apollo 11 lunar landing as seen from the surface of the Moon. He then puts these horoscopes to the test using modern data sets and statistical science, arguing that today’s data scientists do work similar to astrologers of yore. By looking back at the algorithms of ancient astrology, he suggests, we can better recognize the patterns that are timeless characteristics of our own pattern-matching tendencies. At once critical, rigorous, and far ranging, A Scheme of Heaven recontextualizes astrology as a vast, technological project—spanning continents and centuries—that foreshadowed our data-driven world today.

Book In Search of Destiny

Download or read book In Search of Destiny written by Edith Hathaway and published by Vintagevedicpress. This book was released on 2012-04-15 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Called a "path breaker" among astrology books, with original research and in-depth coverage, the author combines non-technical and technical material very effectively in a compelling narrative. This book contains a riveting choice of biographies and historical, cultural events that illuminate both individual AND collective destinies. When Vedic astrology - the astrology of India - is combined with biography, history, politics, the arts and culture, a key missing component is provided to all of the above. In Search of Destiny is for astrologers, astrology students as well as for the layperson. The only criterion is an interest and openness to astrology. Find out how the planets affect individuals and whole nations and societies, and how the chart of a national leader is never separate from the nation ruled - for as long as he or she is in power. An extensive glossary, footnotes and index help the reader to navigate through the wide-ranging information provided in this book. For the novice, Chapter 2 provides a succinct summary of Vedic astrology and philosophy. Vedic charts are presented in both North and South Indian format, with the lifetime planetary cycles of the Vimshottari Dasha system - for which Vedic astrology is so famous. Any astrologer will benefit from the depth of research done here, and the layperson will find this a user-friendly book that broadens the horizons. "Edith Hathaway's remarkable new book In Search of Destiny is an astrological sensation on many levels. ...A narrative of individual dharma woven in the context of collective destiny.... Her innovative research of the 20-year Jupiter/Saturn cycles over a 1000-year period bears rich historical and thematic fruit... and includes her current and future predictions. I highly recommend In Search of Destiny ..." Dennis Flaherty, Vedic astrologer, President of CVA (Council of Vedic Astrology), Washington, USA.

Book excerpt: Y (Spiritual Journey) is a book of spiritual poems that explore an array of human emotions and experiences. For some of you, it is a reflection in the mirror to your soul. For others, it reveals stories you have lived, lingering memories of silent struggles from within. But for all, its intent is to provide insight, inspiration and hope. God is the rock and the foundation of every poem. He is the way, the truth and the light, who will guide you on your journey through this life. Book My Roots My Destiny

Download or read book My Roots My Destiny written by Gabriel Groszman and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My Roots, My Destiny, based on a profound historical investigation and the personal recollections of the author Gabriel Groszman, describes the fate of his family in the context of the history of the Central European Jews during two centuries. The narration takes us from the Jewish Enlightenment and Emancipation through the World Wars and their shattering consequences, culminating in the loss of millions of European Jews in the Holocaust. The family history, narrated through several generations, reflects the shared destiny of Austro-Hungarian and German Jewry and their achievements in spite of discrimination and open persecution leading to exile, survival or death. The story, which unfolds without resentment, takes us with irony and humor from the age of the Hapsburg Empire through the author's own coming of age in an increasingly anti-Semitic Hungary, the Nazi terror, a brief period of democracy, communist dictatorship and, finally, life in Austria under the occupation of the victorious allies. Gabriel Groszman was born in 1930 in a small Hungarian village. When he was 10 years old, his religious Jewish family moved to Budapest under the pressure of anti-Semitic laws. There he attended an Orthodox middle school until 1944, at which time Germany occupied Hungary. During the ensuing twelve months, his family struggled to elude the Nazi death trap. In 1949, they left the country, then under communist rule, for Vienna, where he began his university studies. Three years later, they emigrated to Argentina, where Groszman married, had three children, and built up a successful industrial company. In 2003, he moved with his wife to Florida. He published his book My Roots, My Destiny in Spanish in 2009, followed by the German and English translations in August and September 2011, respectively. He is now working on his second endeavor, a family saga in the context of the history of the German Jews.

They choose the path of the kind of life that they want for themselves. Important decisions such as career choices, family values, personal virtues, principles, faith convictions and the choice of friends become defined. Nothing is left to guesswork or to chance. Making tough decisions to govern and secure our lives for the long run is not a matter to be taken lightly. Failure to do this has an almost certain consequence - it pushes people to lose their moral compass, forget their value-based living and forfeit the strength of character to stand the test of time. People who do not make these decisions, though they may be good looking, bright in school or intelligent in life, they do not establish a good legacy or build success for posterity. My Character, My Destiny is a life tool to help become somebody of substance for youself and in society. It is a lesson that a life defined is a life insured! Building good character is one of the surest ways to define, protect and propagate a fruitful life - personally and generationally. For indeed, character is destiny!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acknowledged as the outstanding business leader of the late twentieth century, Jack Welch made General Electric one of the world's most competitive companies. This dynamic CEO defined the standard for organizational change, creating more than $400 billion in shareholder value by transforming a bureaucratic behemoth into a nimble, scrappy winner in the global marketplace. Here, Tichy and Sherman extract the enduring leadership lessons from the revolution Welch wrought at GE. Of these, the most essential is the limitless power of learning. Leadership has its mysteries, but it is a skill that anyone can acquire and enhance. Above all, great leaders select great people and lure them into an endless process of learning and adaptation. Jack Welch's Six Rules Control your destiny or someone else will. Face reality as it is, not as it was, or as you wish it were. Be candid with everyone. Don't manage, lead. Change before you have to. If you don't have a competitive advantage, don't compete.

Download or read book Truth Consequence written by Mark Breithaupt and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2022-02-03 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: His writings transcend the complete anatomy of the human spirit from the very beginning of life to his inevitable demise. He questioned humanity’s customs and beliefs, trying to bring some measure of understanding to societies’ inequities and injustices and their consequences. However, the most daunting was his search to move from this world to the next with a compelling undying reverence. Driven by an insatiable desire to infusion and utopian world, he is completely optimistic with a vision to see what our world could be—an unforgiving reality of the stark world he did see—humanity’s collative inability and reluctance to change from the beginning of time. With all man’s advances, man has failed to improve his chances to live in peace and harmony. Nothing has been learned from the fable of Cain and Abel. Mankind has always been corrupted by the winds of war but now on the precipice of destroying the very planet of our birth, the most beautiful and majestic in our cosmic search, our only home in this universe.
