Book Questions of Cultural Identity

Download or read book Questions of Cultural Identity written by Stuart Hall and published by SAGE. This book was released on 1996-04-04 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why and how do contemporary questions of culture so readily become highly charged questions of identity? The question of cultural identity lies at the heart of current debates in cultural studies and social theory. At issue is whether those identities which defined the social and cultural world of modern societies for so long - distinctive identities of gender, sexuality, race, class and nationality - are in decline, giving rise to new forms of identification and fragmenting the modern individual as a unified subject. Questions of Cultural Identity offers a wide-ranging exploration of this issue. Stuart Hall firstly outlines the reasons why the question of identity is so compelling and yet so problematic. The cast of outstanding contributors then interrogate different dimensions of the crisis of identity; in so doing, they provide both theoretical and substantive insights into different approaches to understanding identity.

Those who stay in an adopted country permanently go through a continual process of adjustment and learning both about their new country - and about themselves. The intimate stories of these "accidental" immigrants broaden conventional notions of home.

Book China Developing

Download or read book China Developing written by George Fusun Ling and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2008 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the intellectual foundation of the sociopolitical, economic and legal systems of developing countries, using a methodological approach. It calls for not only the need to search for a country''s cultural identity, but also a need to analyze the prevalent concepts important to a contemporary modern society, such as the respect for an individual, human rights, freedom, equality, democracy and the universal respect for law. Based on the author''s lifelong reflection on why some of these deeply treasured Western values and institutions have not been useful in developing democracy in Asia, it examines which values are applicable and which are not to Asian emerging societies. Using China''s historical and contemporary attempts in modernization and development, the author suggests that all mighty rivers are confluences of multiple tributaries. Likewise, an emerging society has to recognize that the dynamism of its history would also be derived from a confluence of multiple cultural traditions. As a valuable resource for decision-makers of developing countries, this book will help to shed some light on the potential pitfalls and fallacies they may encounter in their search for a cultural identity and values to subscribe to, among the many that are circulating in our globalized world. Contents: Respect for the Individual Person and Individualism; Human Rights and Individual Rights; Freedom from Want and Freedom of Choice; Equality and Respect for Differences; Democracy and the Democratic Process; Law and Order. Book Identity Culture and Cultural Identity in a Postmodern World

Download or read book Identity Culture and Cultural Identity in a Postmodern World written by Jitendra Jain and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2013-05-31 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject Cultural Studies - Empiric Cultural Studies, grade: 2.0, Ruhr-University of Bochum (European Culture & Economy), course: MA (ECUE), language: English, abstract: End of the 20th century has witnessed sudden emergence of “Identity Culture”. More and more people across the globe are thinking about their identity and origin. Collective identity is gaining more and more importance. Noted Scholar Samuel Huntington writes in his celebrated work „ Kampf der Kulturen“ : „Völker und Nationen versuchen heute, die elementarste Frage zu beantworten, vor der Menschen stehen können: Wer sind wir ?“ Identifying with others, in various different ways, can be extremely important for living in postmodern society. In today’s postmodern times identities are ever changing, overlapping and they are also situation specific. This paper intends to explore the possibility of describing cultural identity emerging in contemporary postmodern world. I begin with conceptualization of the term “Culture”. The main purpose of this work is to deal with cultural identity in postmodern age and hence I have taken liberty to use the words postmodern, postmodernity and postmodernism synonymously. The term postmodern consists of a whole plethora of interpretations and it derives its origin from modernism. Hence I start with description of modernism in chapter two. Thereafter comparative analysis of modernism and postmodernism is presented. Postmodern age is an age of dilemmas. This era has given momentum to identity culture. As mentioned earlier more and more people are worried about their identities and various discourses at various levels are taking place. But simultaneously cultural identity in this era is getting fragmented. Hence discussion in divided two parts namely - identity culture and cultural identity - in postmodern times. I have deliberately restricted my sphere to philosophical and cultural fields.
