Book excerpt: This lively and authoritative volume makes clear that the quest for taste and manners in America has been essential to the serious pursuit of a democratic culture. Spanning the material world from mansions and silverware to etiquette books, city planning, and sentimental novels, Richard L. Bushman shows how a set of values originating in aristocratic court culture gradually permeated almost every stratum of American society and served to prevent the hardening of class consciousness. A work of immense and richly nuanced learning, The Refinement of America newly illuminates every facet of both our artifacts and our values.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The unforgettable Margaret of Ashbury returns in the second book of the trilogy that began with A Vision of Light. Margaret, a resourceful midwife, is living with the insufferable relatives of her third husband, Gilbert de Vilers, known as Gregory. She is carving out a life for herself and her daughters despite the hostility and greed of her in-laws. But when Gregory is captured in France and held for ransom, Margaret knows she must take action—her in-laws are too tight with money to be of any use—so she teams up with her old friends Mother Hilde, the herbalist, and Brother Malachi, an alchemist on a quest for the secret of changing base metals into gold. Together, the trio plan to rescue Gregory and bring him back to London, where he and Margaret can start a new life away from his meddling family. And thus begins a wild romp across fourteenth-century Europe. Murderous noblemen, scheming ladies, truculent ghosts, and a steady stream of challenges plague the journey. Margaret will need not only her special gift of healing, her quick mind, and her independent spirit but the loyalty of her friends and the love of her new husband to carry them all safely home.

Book Transatlantic Exchanges

    Book Details:
  • Author : Richard Gray
  • Publisher : Austrian Academy of Sciences Press
  • Release : 2007
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 612 pages

Download or read book Transatlantic Exchanges written by Richard Gray and published by Austrian Academy of Sciences Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume is based on an international colloquium held in Vienna under the auspices of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the British Academy. It contains contributions by prominent experts on the culture, literature, popular music and history of the American South, and its role as an arena for cultural interaction. The more than 30 essays provide analyses of the long-standing cultural exchange between this region and the Old World from the 18th century to the present with the resulting cross-fertilization in literature and in the cinema. It also includes essays on the European experiences of prominent Southern authors and their reception in Europe and illustrates the fact that this region of the United States has been open to influences from elsewhere, prone to hybridization, but especially to the impact of the transatlantic exchange, a field of research particularly appropriate in an era of an increasing internationalization of interdisciplinary Southern studies.

Book In Pursuit of Civility

    Book Details:
  • Author : Keith Thomas
  • Publisher : Brandeis University Press
  • Release : 2018-06-05
  • ISBN : 1512602825
  • Pages : 378 pages

Download or read book In Pursuit of Civility written by Keith Thomas and published by Brandeis University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Keith Thomas's earlier studies in the ethnography of early modern England, Religion and the Decline of Magic, Man and the Natural World, and The Ends of Life, were all attempts to explore beliefs, values, and social practices in the centuries from 1500 to 1800. In Pursuit of Civility continues this quest by examining what English people thought it meant to be "civilized" and how that condition differed from being "barbarous" or "savage." Thomas shows that the upper ranks of society sought to distinguish themselves from their social inferiors by distinctive ways of moving, speaking, and comporting themselves, and that the common people developed their own form of civility. The belief of the English in their superior civility shaped their relations with the Welsh, the Scots, and the Irish, and was fundamental to their dealings with the native peoples of North America, India, and Australia. Yet not everyone shared this belief in the superiority of Western civilization; the book sheds light on the origins of both anticolonialism and cultural relativism. Thomas has written an accessible history based on wide reading, abounding in fresh insights, and illustrated by many striking quotations and anecdotes from contemporary sources.

Book Refined Consequentialism

Download or read book Refined Consequentialism written by Patrick Andrew Tully and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2006 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Refined Consequentialism critically examines the moral vision offered by the late Richard A. McCormick, the premier American Catholic moral theologian of the post-Vatican II era. Taking a philosophical approach to a debate carried on primarily by moral theologians, the author presents a forceful case that McCormick's brand of proportionalism belongs in the ranks of consequentialist moral theories. In doing so, the author stakes out a clear position on one side of a crucial debate that goes to the heart of the Catholic and Christian moral tradition. This book may serve as a text in both undergraduate and graduate courses that deal with contemporary Catholic (and secular) moral thought. A broader public - one interested in the history of moral theology and in the ethical-theoretical underpinnings of the current debates within the churches on euthanasia, supporting pro-choice politicians, and removal of nutrition and hydration from gravely ill patients - will also find this book of great interest.
