Book In Phase Thermomechanical Fatigue of Metal Matrix Composites

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation was undertaken to characterize the deformation response of unidirectional SCS-6/Ti 15-3 metal matrix composite (MMC) lamina subjected to in-phase thermomechanical fatigue (TMF) loading. Evaluations were done in an inert atmosphere to avoid oxidation effects. It was found that the dominant effect on deformation was due to strain ratchetting. Distributed fiber cracking was found to be the primary damage mode in in-phase TMF. The early part of strain ratchetting was identified to be due to the viscoplastic response of the composite as fewer fiber cracks were found to develop at this stage in the MMC specimens. Early fiber cracks were found to occur near molybdenum (Mo) ribbon sites. The fiber-cracking process was determined to be progressive in nature. On qualitative grounds, the concept of fiber ineffective length and the zone of stress intensification at the neighboring fiber at temperature, as in the case of in-phase TMF, was consistent with the observation of progressive fiber cracking in the MMCs.

Book Methodologies for Predicting the Thermomechanical Fatigue Life of Unidirectional Metal Matrix Composites

Download or read book Methodologies for Predicting the Thermomechanical Fatigue Life of Unidirectional Metal Matrix Composites written by RW. Neu and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parameters and models to correlate the cycles to failure of a unidirectional metal matrix composite (SCS-6/Timetal 21S) undergoing thermal and mechanical loading are examined. Three different cycle types are considered: out-of-phase thermomechanical fatigue (TMF), in-phase TMF, and isothermal fatigue. A single parameter based on either the fiber or matrix behavior is shown not to correlate the cycles to failure of all the data. Two prediction methods are presented that assume that life may be dependent on at least two fatigue damage mechanisms and therefore consist of two terms. The first method, the linear life fraction model, shows that by using the response of the constituents, the life of these different cycle types are better correlated using two simple empirical relationships: one describing the fatigue damage in the matrix and the other fiber-dominated damage. The second method, the dominant damage model, is more complex but additionally brings in the effect of the environment. This latter method improves the predictions of the effects of the maximum temperature, temperature range, and frequency, especially under out-of-phase TMF and isothermal fatigue. The steady-state response of the constituents is determined using a 1-D micromechanics model with viscoplasticity. The residual stresses due to the CTE mismatch between the fiber and matrix during processing are included in the analysis.

Book Fatigue under Thermal and Mechanical Loading Mechanisms Mechanics and Modelling

Download or read book Fatigue under Thermal and Mechanical Loading Mechanisms Mechanics and Modelling written by J. Bressers and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Symposium "Fatigue under Thermal and Mechanical Loading", held at Petten (The Netherlands) on May 22-24, 1995, was jointly organized by the Institute for Advanced Materials of The Joint Research Centre, E. C. , and by the Societe Fran~se de Metallurgie et de Materiaux. The fast heating and cooling cycles experienced by many high temperature components cause thermally induced stresses, which often operate in combination with mechanical loads. The resulting thermal / mechanical fatigue cycle leads to material degradation mechanisms and failure modes typical of service cycles. The growing awareness that the synergism between the combined thermal and mechanical loads can not be reproduced by means of isothermal tests, has resulted in an increasing interest in thermal and thermo-mechanical fatigue testing. This trend has been reinforced by the constant pull by industry for more performant, yet safer high temperature systems, pushing the materials to the limit of their properties. Dedicated ASTM meetings in particular have set the scene for this area of research. The proceedings of the symposium organized by D. A. Spera and D. F. Mowbray in 1975 provided a reference book on thermal fatigue which reflects the knowledge and experimental capabilities of the mid-seventies.

Book Thermomechanical Fatigue of a Quasi Isotropic Metal Matrix Composite

Download or read book Thermomechanical Fatigue of a Quasi Isotropic Metal Matrix Composite written by BS. Majumdar and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In-phase thermomechanical fatigue (TMF) and elevated temperature isothermal fatigue (IF) experiments were conducted on a [0,±45,90]s Ti 15-3/SCS6 composite under load control. A correlation was obtained between the stabilized mechanical strain range and TMF life. TMF life was found to be significantly shorter than IF life when comparisons were made either on a stress-range or a gross mechanical strain-range basis. Damage modes were investigated using optical and scanning electron microscopy. The primary damage mode in IF specimens was transverse microcracking oriented perpendicular to the loading axis. In TMF specimens, although similar damage was observed very close to the fracture surface, the primary damage modes were inter-ply delamination and fiber-matrix debonding. Limited experiments were performed where damage was monitored using a replication technique on the specimen edges. These experiments confirmed delamination and debonding in TMF as well as thermally cycled specimens. Wavelength dispersive spectroscopic (WDS) analysis showed carbon-rich zones along many ply-to-ply interfaces, and these zones may have accelerated delamination cracking. Finite element analysis indicated that the maximum delamination stress occurred at the minimum temperature in the TMF experiments. The fatigue data of Ti 15-3/SCS6 composite, from this and other investigations, were plotted in the form of 0° fiber stress range versus logarithm of fatigue life. This phenomenological plot indicated a similar trend for various data sets, but the exact mechanisms remain to be determined.

Book Analysis of Thermomechanical Fatigue of Unidirectional Titanium Metal Matrix Composites

Download or read book Analysis of Thermomechanical Fatigue of Unidirectional Titanium Metal Matrix Composites written by YA. Bahei-El-Din and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermomechanical fatigue (TMF) data have been generated for a Ti-15V-3Cr-3Al-3Sn (Ti-15-3) material reinforced with SCS-6 silicon carbide fibers for both in-phase and out-of-phase testing. Significant differences in failure mechanisms and fatigue life are noted for the in-phase and out-of-phase testing. The purpose of the research reported in this paper is to apply a micromechanics model to analysis of the data. The analysis predicts the stresses in the fiber and in the matrix material during the thermal and mechanical cycling by calculating both the thermal and mechanical stresses and their time-dependent behavior. The rate-dependent behavior of the matrix was characterized and was used to calculate the constituent stresses in the composite. The predicted 0° fiber stress range was used to explain the composite failure. It was found that for a given condition, temperature, loading frequency, and time at temperature, the 0° fiber stress range may control the fatigue life of the unidirectional composite.

Book Simulation of Fatigue Behavior of High Temperature Metal Matrix Composites

Download or read book Simulation of Fatigue Behavior of High Temperature Metal Matrix Composites written by CC. Chamis and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A generalized relatively new approach is described for the computational simulation of fatigue behavior of high temperature metal matrix composites (HT-MMCs). This theory is embedded in a specialty-purpose computer code. The effectiveness of the computer code to predict the fatigue behavior of HT-MMCs is demonstrated by applying it to a silicon-fiber/titanium-matrix HT-MMC. Comparative results are shown for mechanical fatigue, thermal fatigue, thermomechanical (in-phase and out-of-phase) fatigue, as well as the effects of oxidizing environments on fatigue life. These results show that the new approach reproduces available experimental data remarkably well.
