Memorial Meeting In obedience to a call on the arrival of the morning trains on September 10th, 1904. the day of the funeral, the opera house at Curwensville was filled with a large assemblage of people gathered for a brief memorial service. Special trains from Rochester, New York City and Harrisburg had brought many business and legislative associates of Senator Patton, and from all the surrounding region a great multitude had gathered to do honor to his memory. After the meeting had been properly organized, col. E. A. irvin, the Presiding Officer, said: hold in our hall various kinds of meetings to discuss things of moment, but in this particular meeting we come together in common sorrow. We who have lived here for many years, who have known the man whom you have gathered here to mourn, are grateful to these gentlemen, and to others of you in the audience, that you have thought fit to come here today to mingle your tears with ours. Sorrow is the common lot, and it is a grateful thing to have our friends come and sympathize with us at all times. It is well for men in this busy life, when we are occupied in different ways, in all the stress and push of our surroundings, to gather as we have gathered here, to understand somewhat the higher and nobler nature of this thing we call "life." The man we mourn has laid down his life, has quit his battle, his struggle, and he is at rest, and we gather here to recall, as best we may, somewhat of his kindly life. I am at a loss what to say.
