This book was released on 2007-10-01 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nan Aspinwall led an extraordinary life as a sharp-shooter and trick-roper in Buffalo Bills Wild West Show. According to legend, a disagreement between Cody and his rival showman, Pawnee Bill, led to the circumstances whereby Nan was challenged to undertake a solo transcontinental ride. Could a woman ride from the Pacific to the Atlantic alone the showmen argued? Nan set off in September 1910 to prove it was possible. Mounting her mare, Lady Ellen, the Long Rider packed her pistol, picked up a letter from the Mayor of San Francisco addressed to his counterpart, then set out to deliver it to New York. But after riding into the history books as the first woman to ride alone across America, Nans amazing tale became lost due to a clerical error. Although researchers spent years trying to uncover what happened to this remarkable Long Rider, Nans story was finally uncovered thanks to the diligent academic research of author, Mary C. Higginbotham. Thanks to her detective work Nan's extraordinary story was discovered under her married name in an obscure file in the Midwest. Featuring a special Introduction by Dr. Juti Winchester, Curator of the Buffalo Bill Cody Historical Center, this is a fascinating story which is amply illustrated with never-before-seen photographs of Nan in the saddle and on the stage.

Download or read book Electric Dreamland written by Lauren Rabinovitz and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2012-07-24 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amusement parks were the playgrounds of the working class in the early twentieth century, combining numerous, mechanically-based spectacles into one unique, modern cultural phenomenon. Lauren Rabinovitz describes the urban modernity engendered by these parks and their media, encouraging ordinary individuals to sense, interpret, and embody a burgeoning national identity. As industrialization, urbanization, and immigration upended society, amusement parks tempered the shocks of racial, ethnic, and cultural conflict while shrinking the distinctions between gender and class. Following the rise of American parks from 1896 to 1918, Rabinovitz seizes on a simultaneous increase in cinema and spectacle audiences and connects both to the success of leisure activities in stabilizing society. Critics of the time often condemned parks and movies for inciting moral decline, yet in fact they fostered women's independence, racial uplift, and assimilation. The rhythmic, mechanical movements of spectacle also conditioned audiences to process multiple stimuli. Featuring illustrations from private collections and accounts from unaccessed archives, Electric Dreamland joins film and historical analyses in a rare portrait of mass entertainment and the modern eye.

Download or read book Astride written by Eliza McGraw and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2025-01-14 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On March 3, 1913, a quarter of a million people gathered in Washington, DC, to watch five thousand female suffragists march down Pennsylvania Avenue, headed by a cohort of equestrians in breeches and plumed hats. From atop a white horse, wearing long white boots and a cloak emblazoned with a Maltese cross, Inez Milholland rallied her compatriots against hecklers. Channeling Joan of Arc, Milholland appeared strong and fearless as she sat astride her horse. The latter half of the 1800s ushered in a golden age of the horse that found more American women riding—both aside and astride—as they commanded presence in the public sphere. Reporters filed riding-craze stories about Manhattan socialites shopping on horseback, women who exercised on hobby horses, and women who worked as horsebreakers, cattle rustlers, or jockeys. In Astride: Horses, Women, and a Partnership That Shaped America, Eliza McGraw weaves together stories of women who pioneered in worlds such as Thoroughbred breeding, the circus, and horse rescue at a time when American women in general internalized the lessons of horsewomen: take chances, take up more space, and learn to get back on. From tamers to caretakers and performers to teachers, all worked with horses to buck the status quo. Expressing the idea of femininity with athleticism and authority, these trailblazers changed the way America understood women. Richly illustrated with period photographs, Astride demonstrates that even small changes can advance the fight for progress.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cowgirl’s Creed Courage doesn’t develop when things are going well. Instead, it creeps up your backbone fed by the springs of fear. So begins A Cowgirl’s Life in the Mountains, where colorful, authentic characters—including the author herself—reveal their stories as they navigate rugged terrain and negotiate the temperaments of fellow travelers. In her debut book, Lauralee Northcott braids together stories, songs, poems, menus and recipes from her 30-plus years as a horseback guide and cook in Washington’s Pasayten and Lake Chelan-Sawtooth wilderness areas. Lauralee captures human (and animal) behavior humorously and thoughtfully, recounting evenings where her cook tent and the campfire became the space for sharing hearty dinners, reflecting on the day, getting better acquainted, and enjoying cowboy music. Focused and engaging, her experiences as an entertainer and a mountain horseman shine through. Perfect for anyone who loves the mountains, horses and the wilderness, A Cowgirl’s Life in the Mountains will teach readers practical wilderness tips, as well as the art of Dutch oven cooking and how to set up their own backyard “campfire”—a space to share a meal and a story, and the magic of the outdoors. So saddle up and grab a big slice of hard-won, horseman knowledge, served up in some kickass prose and sweet poetry!

Download or read book Red Dirt Women written by Susan Kates and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2013-07-23 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many people who have never spent time in the state, Oklahoma conjures up a series of stereotypes: rugged cowboys, tipi-dwelling American Indians, uneducated farmers. When women are pictured at all, they seem frozen in time: as the bonneted pioneer woman stoically enduring hardship or the bedraggled, gaunt-faced mother familiar from Dust Bowl photographs. In Red Dirt Women, Susan Kates challenges these one-dimensional characterizations by exploring—and celebrating—the lives of contemporary Oklahoma women whose experiences are anything but predictable. In essays both intensely personal and universal, Red Dirt Women reveals the author’s own heartaches and joys in becoming a parent through adoption, her love of regional treasures found in “junk” stores, and her deep appreciation of Miss Dorrie, her son’s unconventional preschool teacher. Through lively profiles, interviews, and sketches, we come to know pioneer queens from the Panhandle, rodeo riders, casino gamblers, roller-derby skaters, and the “Lady of Jade”—a former “boat person” from Vietnam who now owns a successful business in Oklahoma City. As she illuminates the lives of these memorable Oklahoma women, Kates traces her own journey to Oklahoma with clarity and insight. Born and raised in Ohio, she confesses an initial apprehension about her adopted home, admitting that she felt “vulnerable on the open lands.” Yet her original unease develops into a deep affection for the landscape, history, culture, and people of Oklahoma. The women we meet in Red Dirt Women are not politicians, governors’ wives, or celebrities—they are women of all ages and backgrounds who surround us every day and who are as diverse as Oklahoma itself.
