Book This Narrow Space

Download or read book This Narrow Space written by Elisha Waldman and published by Schocken. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A memoir both bittersweet and inspiring by an American pediatric oncologist who spent seven years in Jerusalem treating children—Israeli Jews, Muslims, and Christians, and Palestinian Arabs from the West Bank and Gaza—who had all been diagnosed with cancer. In 2007, Elisha Waldman, a New York–based doctor in his mid-thirties, was offered his dream job: attending physician at Jerusalem’s Hadassah Medical Center. He had gone to medical school in Israel and spent time there as a teenager; now he was going to give something back to the land he loved. But in the wake of a financial crisis at the hospital, Waldman, with considerable regret, left Hadassah in 2014 and returned to the United States. This Narrow Space is his poignant memoir of seven years that were filled with a deep sense of accomplishment but also with frustration when regional politics got in the way of his patients’ care, and with tension over the fine line he had to walk when the religious traditions of some of his patients’ families made it difficult for him to give those children the care he felt they deserved. Navigating the baffling Israeli bureaucracy, the ever-present threat of full-scale war, and the cultural clashes that sometimes spilled into his clinic, Waldman learned to be content with small victories: a young patient whose disease went into remission, brokenhearted parents whose final hours with their child were made meaningful and comforting. Waldman also struggled with his own questions of identity and belief, and with the intractable conflict between Israelis and Palestinians that had become a fact of his daily life. What he learned about himself, about the complex country that he was now a part of, and about the brave and endearing children he cared for—whether they were from Rehavia, Me’ah She’arim, Ramallah, or Gaza City—will move and challenge readers everywhere.

Download or read book Libby Langdon s Small Space Solutions written by Libby Langdon and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2009-02-14 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When someone says they live in a small house or apartment, the image that comes to mind is all too often negative—cramped, cluttered, or confining. But America’s leading small space designer, Libby Langdon, knows just how to counter that stereotype. In Libby Langdon’s Small Space Solutions, she finally offers a practical, user-friendly guide to decorating small spaces so they look stylish, beautiful, and larger than their actual dimensions. Setting out from the premise that it doesn’t take lots of money to achieve a warm and inviting atmosphere, she delivers practicality and inspiration that’s affordable. Armed with a bit of basic design knowledge and a few of Libby’s tricks of the trade, any small-space dweller can learn how to create gracious, inviting small-space homes that are also functional to a tee. Each chapter addresses the most common problems encountered in a particular space—living room, dining room, kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, office, or hall—and presents solutions and sample layouts, as well as numerous color photos showing transformed spaces “before” and “after” that illustrate small-space design tips. Libby also spells out the top ten mistakes people make in small spaces, and provides step-by-step instructions for painting and hanging art. An invaluable resource for apartment dwellers, first-time homeowners, and anyone looking to downsize, Libby Langdon’s Small Space Solutions proves that living with less doesn’t mean living without luxury.

Folch Mateu integrates a wide range of psychoanalytic sources – Freud, Klein and Bion, and French psychoanalysis – in approaching topics like the psychoanalytic process, obsessive modes of control, the pathology of the negative and intellectual inhibition. The author’s interest in exploring the interactions between the analyst and the patient in minute detail through the course of the psychoanalytic process is a key theme that emerges throughout, as is his devotion to the intersections between music, literature and psychoanalysis. Book Practice Practice Theory and Theology

Download or read book Practice Practice Theory and Theology written by Kirstine Helboe Johansen and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-05-09 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How might practice theories and engagement with practice contribute to and advance theological study of religion and religious life and practices? This volume explores and discusses how theological engagement with practice, theoretically as well as empirically, might profit from theories of practice developed in disciplines such as philosophy, sociology, education and organisational studies during the recent decades, but so far scarcely employed within theology. In part I, the volume unfolds key components of practice theory, especially as they have more recently been developed within sociological practice theories, reflect on their significance and potential with regard to theology. In part II, these perspectives are employed in the study of concrete religious practices - established as well as experimental religious practices, and collective as well as individual ones. By unfolding connections between theology and practice theories, and reflecting on practice theories' analytical and theoretical potential for theological study of religion, the book will be of interest for any scholar in the study of contemporary religion and practical theology.

Download or read book Strip Show written by Katherine Liepe-Levinson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-01 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an account of an unprecedented North American study of contemporary female and male strip shows. It particularly focuses on the contradictory sex roles, cultural positions, and performance practices of 'straight' strip shows during their second heyday in the early 1990s. Katherine Liepe-Levinson's research took her to over seventy different strip bars, clubs, theatres and sex emporiums ranging from elaborate lap-dancing and couch-dancing 'gentlemen's' clubs in New York, Houston, and San Francisco; to Peoria's onetime duplex cabaret where women strip for men downstairs, and men for women upstairs; to the nightclubs of Montreal where female and male performers displayed the 'Full Monty'. Liepe-Levinson's intriguing, comprehensive study concentrates on the cultural and theatrical elements of the strip shows themselves including the geographic locations and interior designs of the clubs, the choreography and costumes of the dancers and the all-important participation of the audience. She draws upon a variety of methodologies as well as interviews with performers to explore how the strip show's cultural and theatrical aspects simultaneously uphold and break traditional sex roles. Her findings readily complicate several of the most prominent and prevalent theories about sexual representation, gender and desire.
