Book In channel Hydraulic Geometry of Streams in Kansas

Download or read book In channel Hydraulic Geometry of Streams in Kansas written by Clarence V. Burns and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The rates of increase in a downstream direction in width, depth, and velocity of streams in Kansas are similar to those found for other streams in the Midwest. Information from 117 stream-gaging stations in Kansas and adjoining areas was used to develop the parameters to define the hydraulic geometry of the streams. Hydraulic equations written in terms of discharge were developed by least-squares regression for flows exceeded 10, 50, and 80 percent of the time and for average flow. The equations are used to predict the average width, depth, and velocity of flow for any location on streams in Kansas having drainage areas between 100 and 9,000 square miles. The average depth and velocity of flow can be used to compute the coefficient of reaeration"--Abstract.

Book The Hydraulic Geometry of Stream Channels and Some Physiographic Implications

Download or read book The Hydraulic Geometry of Stream Channels and Some Physiographic Implications written by Luna Bergere Leopold and published by . This book was released on 1953 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantitative measurement of some of the hydraulic factors that help to determine the shape of natural stream channels: depth, width, velocity, and suspended load, and how they vary with discharge as simple power functions. Their interrelations are described by the term "hydraulic geometry".

Book Channel Geometry of Regulated Streams in Kansas as Related to Mean Discharge 1970 80

Download or read book Channel Geometry of Regulated Streams in Kansas as Related to Mean Discharge 1970 80 written by W. R. Osterkamp and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Numerous studies of the hydrologic and hydraulic effects of reservoirs have been made, but very little quantitative work has been performed on the manner in which regulation of discharge and alteration of the sediment supply influence channel geometry downstream from a reservoir. The purposes of this study are: (1) To determine if channel-geometry measurements, which were useful as a means of estimating discharge of natural streams, can provide reliable estimates of discharge characteristics of regulated streams in Kansas; (2) to determine how geometry-discharge relations of regulated-stream channels differ from those of natural channels; (3) to investigate changes in channel size and shape along specified regulated streams in Kansas; and (4) to determine the changes in gradient, sinuosity, and channel-sediment characteristics that are associated with the regulation of streamflow"--Introduction.

Book Guidelines for Stream Realignment Design

Download or read book Guidelines for Stream Realignment Design written by Bruce M. McEnroe and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: KDOT occasionally finds it necessary to realign short reaches of small streams in connection with highway improvements or to protect the highway embankment against stream encroachment. A realigned stream reach should be stable and should resemble a natural stream in its cross section, profile and planform. The Kansas Analytical Method of natural stream design, developed in this report, follows the general approach recommended by the USACE and the NRCS, and incorporates hydrologic and geomorphic data from natural streams in Kansas. The realigned reach is designed to convey the same bankfull discharge and sediment load as a stable reach directly upstream. The channel length, slope, and cross-sectional dimensions are obtained from an analytical solution to Manning's equation for uniform flow and a simplified version of the Meyer-Peter and Muller sediment-transport equation, along with hydraulic-geometry relations for the bankfull width. A meandering planform with the computed length and an appropriate meander wavelength is constructed of circular arcs and line segments. A saw-tooth bottom profile with riffles and pools at appropriate locations is recommended to provide aquatic habitat during periods of little or no flow. Step-by-step instructions for stream realignment design by the Kansas Analytical Method are provided. An example illustrates the practical application of the method.
