Book excerpt: From All The Floating Strings Do you know the difference between toothpicks and spider webs? It was one of those questions that Coe asked when there was too much silence. What, Coe? Larry asked. Thats the thing. There is no difference because everything is connected. Bread and birds and stars and strollers and pain and heat. And thats the trouble. Because nothing gets differentiated. And its all a mass of confusion. Thats whats wrong with us sometimes, Coe. The way we see things. I think nothing is connected. I think we try, but nothing comes close to anything else. Were all like strings. Kind of floating in a wind. Maybe we touch for a second. And then some breeze makes us flow another way. She got up and looked at the spider web by the light near the mailbox. Look at the spider, she said. Its still in the middle of the web just waiting. Dont you see that, Larry? Dont you see it hiding like we are? Doesnt that make us all tied together? Arent we connected like that? Cant you see that, too?

Book The Correspondence of Erasmus

Download or read book The Correspondence of Erasmus written by Desiderius Erasmus and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2019-11-04 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume includes Erasmus’ correspondence for the months April 1532 to April 1533, a period in which he feared a religious civil war in Germany. In his desire to move somewhere far enough from Germany to be safe and yet not so far that an old man could not undertake the journey, Erasmus eventually decided to accept the invitation from Mary of Hungary, regent of the Netherlands, to return to his native Brabant. In March 1533, the terms of Erasmus’ return were settled and in July they were formally approved by the emperor. But by this time Erasmus’ fragile health had already declined to the point that he could not undertake the journey, and he would never recover sufficiently to do so. The works published in the months covered by this volume include the eighth, much-enlarged edition of the Adagia, and the Explanatio symboli, the catechism that delighted Erasmus’ followers but gave Martin Luther much ammunition for a brutal attack on him in his Epistola de Erasmo Roterodamo of 1534.

Book Doing Academic Research

Download or read book Doing Academic Research written by Ted Gournelos and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-14 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Online student resource material cab be accessed under the 'Support Materials' tab at https://www.routledge.com/9780367207939 Doing Academic Research is a concise, accessible, and tightly organized overview of the research process in the humanities, social sciences, and business. Conducting effective scholarly research can seem like a frustrating, confusing, and unpleasant experience. Early researchers often have inconsistent knowledge and experience, and can become overwhelmed – reducing their ability to produce high quality work. Rather than a book about research, this is a practical guide to doing research. It guides budding researchers along the process of developing an effective workflow, where to go for help, and how to actually complete the project. The book addresses diversity in abilities, interest, discipline, and ways of knowing by focusing not just on the process of conducting any one method in detail, but also on the ways in which someone might choose a research method and conduct it successfully. Finally, it emphasizes accessibility and approachability through real-world examples, key insights, tips, and tricks from active researchers. This book is a highly useful addition to both content area courses and research methods courses, as well as a practical guide for graduate students and independent scholars interested in publishing their research.

Book I Know Where You Sleep

Download or read book I Know Where You Sleep written by Alan Orloff and published by Down & Out Books. This book was released on 2020-02-10 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Anderson West takes on the pro-bono case of Jessica Smith, a twenty-something restaurant hostess being stalked, the last thing he expects is for his investigation to spiral into breaking and entering, assault, and legal threats from the suspects and the victim. But that’s what happens when you run a private investigation firm with your rule-breaking, loose-cannon sister at your side. While Anderson spends his time deducing and interviewing possible suspects, Carrie handles interrogations in her own unique—and personal—fashion. And it seems like everyone is a suspect. There are Jessica’s ex-boyfriend and current boyfriend, her incredibly creepy boss and the suspicious reverend at her church who definitely seems to be hiding something. Or someone. The closer Anderson and Carrie get to an answer, the more danger Jessica finds herself in. Her stalker’s notes become increasingly more threatening, trading the scary phone calls and text messages for terrifying photographs and notes at her gym, work, and home. To make things even more complicated, Jessica’s backstory begins to unravel, and the secrets of her past could potentially solve everything…if only she’d let Anderson and Carrie in. With time ticking down, will the brother-sister investigative team be able to solve Jessica’s case before she tries something foolhardy, like facing up to the tenacious bastard on her own, armed only with a handgun and a prayer? Praise for I KNOW WHERE YOU SLEEP: “Sleep is one thing that readers won’t get much of when they pick up this stellar novel! Gripping from first page to last, Orloff’s I Know Where You Sleep virtually defines the psychological thriller. And Anderson and Carrie are two of the most compelling—and appealing—heroes in crime fiction to come along in years. You’ll love them just as much as you’ll be swept up by Orloff’s brilliant plot.” —Jeffery Deaver, author of The Bone Collector and The Never Game “With clock-ticking yet compassionate prose, Alan Orloff portrays one of the horrors of all our modern lives: the stalker. I Know Where You Sleep is a private eye novel for these all-too-real modern days. Orloff’s P.I. protagonist Anderson West is a man of modern personal complications and classic professional simplicity: he wants to stop evil and crime where he can—and takes readers along for the entertaining, revealing ride.” —James Grady, New York Times bestselling author of Six Days of the Condor “A winner! A twisty page-turning cat and mouse pursuit with a surprise around every corner. If you’re looking for a truly good guy—Anderson West is the perfect choice. This charming protagonist—a PI with heart and determination and a pure sense of justice—will captivate you. The talented Alan Orloff has created a unique and memorable character, and a terrific book.” —Hank Phillippi Ryan, bestselling and award-winning author of The Murder List

Book The Language of Pictures in Print Media Advertising

Download or read book The Language of Pictures in Print Media Advertising written by Wilfried Pichler and published by diplom.de. This book was released on 2002-03-07 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: Today we observe a development in which the role of language is steadily decreasing whereas the impact of pictures is increasing. This goes hand in hand with a development in which information relies more and more on visual concepts. More and more language takes the part of explaining how to read the visual presentations, more and more language takes the part of providing the background information which is necessary to understand the meaning of the visual foreground. Kress and van Leeuwen (1998) argue that Today, we seem to move towards a decrease of control over language (e.g. the greater variety of accents allowed on the public media, the increasing poblems in enforcing normative spelling), and towards an increase in codification and control over the visual (e.g. the use of image banks from which ready-made images can be drawn for the constuction of visual texts, and, generally, the effect of computer imaging technology). Although we may be aware of this tendency, we have not been taught in school how to read visual concepts and so most of us share some degree of illiteracy concerning a critical reading of information presented by images. This is remarkable because we all agree about their influence on our lives but at the same time when we do not develop analytical tools for describing what kinds of strategies, what kinds of concepts are working in visual presentations of information. We tend to overlook the importance of visual concepts simply because we generally do not know enough about their code. This paper analyses photos and language which are parts of ads, which have definitely been designed for transferring messages because they have been made to advertise one specific product. Images and the text of advertisements never are casual products like family pictures. Although the photo in the family album is coded its coding is less elaborated than the coding of pictures in ads. We have to keep in mind that many people, experts in advertising, experts in public relations were involved in the process of designing an ad before we can look at the final result. This is why ads are definitely conceptually designed because they are meant to create a specific meaning in the viewer s mind. It is a truism that no visual concept, no photo of an ad was chosen by chance. Photographs and language of ads are more likely to have been carefully constructed and selected according to the meaning they are supposed to create. This is [...]
