Book How to Read a Moment

Download or read book How to Read a Moment written by Mathias Nilges and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2021-03-15 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In How to Read a Moment, Mathias Nilges shows that time is inseparable from the stories we tell about it, demonstrating that the contemporary American novel offers new ways to make sense of the temporality that governs our present. “Time is a thing that grows scarcer every day,” observes one of Don DeLillo’s characters. “The future is gone,” The Baffler argues. “Where’s my hoverboard!?” a meme demands. Contemporary capitalism, a system that insists that everything happen at once, creates problems for social thought and narrative alike. After all, how does one tell the time of instantaneity? In this moment of on-demand service and instant trading, it has become difficult to imagine the future. The novel emerged as the art form of a rapidly changing modern world, a way of telling time in its progress. Nilges argues that this historical mission is renewed today through works that understand contemporaneity as a form of time shaping that props up our material world and cultural imagination. But the contemporary American novel does not simply associate our present with a crisis of futurity. Through analyses of works by authors such as DeLillo, Jennifer Egan, Charles Yu, and Colson Whitehead, Nilges illustrates that the novel presents ways to make sense of the temporality that controls our purportedly fully contemporary world. In so doing, the novel recovers a sense of possibility and hope, forwarding a dazzling argument for its own importance today.

Book excerpt: It’s 1897. Gold has been discovered in the Yukon. New York is under the sway of Hearst and Pulitzer. And in a few months, an American battleship will explode in a Cuban harbor, plunging the U.S. into war. Spanning five years and half a dozen countries, this is the unforgettable story of that extraordinary moment: the turn of the twentieth century, as seen by one of the greatest storytellers of our time. Shot through with a lyrical intensity and stunning detail that recall Doctorow and Deadwood both, A Moment in the Sun takes the whole era in its sights—from the white-racist coup in Wilmington, North Carolina to the bloody dawn of U.S. interventionism in the Philippines. Beginning with Hod Brackenridge searching for his fortune in the North, and hurtling forward on the voices of a breathtaking range of men and women—Royal Scott, an African American infantryman whose life outside the military has been destroyed; Diosdado Concepcíon, a Filipino insurgent fighting against his country’s new colonizers; and more than a dozen others, Mark Twain and President McKinley’s assassin among them—this is a story as big as its subject: history rediscovered through the lives of the people who made it happen.

Book The Click Moment

Download or read book The Click Moment written by Frans Johansson and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2012-08-30 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the story of every great company and career, there is one defining moment when luck and skill collide. This book is about making that moment happen. According to Frans Johansson’s research, successful people and organizations show a common theme. A lucky moment occurs and they take advantage of it to change their fate. Consider how Diane von Furstenberg saw Julie Nixon Eisenhower on TV wearing a matching skirt and top, and created the timeless, elegant wrap-dress. That was a “click moment” of unexpected opportunity. Johansson uses stories from throughout history to illustrate the specific actions we can take to create more click moments, place lots of high-potential bets, open ourselves up to chance encounters, and harness the complex forces of success that follow.

Book The Power of Moments

Download or read book The Power of Moments written by Chip Heath and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-10-03 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times bestselling authors of Switch and Made to Stick explore why certain brief experiences can jolt us and elevate us and change us—and how we can learn to create such extraordinary moments in our life and work. While human lives are endlessly variable, our most memorable positive moments are dominated by four elements: elevation, insight, pride, and connection. If we embrace these elements, we can conjure more moments that matter. What if a teacher could design a lesson that he knew his students would remember twenty years later? What if a manager knew how to create an experience that would delight customers? What if you had a better sense of how to create memories that matter for your children? This book delves into some fascinating mysteries of experience: Why we tend to remember the best or worst moment of an experience, as well as the last moment, and forget the rest. Why “we feel most comfortable when things are certain, but we feel most alive when they’re not.” And why our most cherished memories are clustered into a brief period during our youth. Readers discover how brief experiences can change lives, such as the experiment in which two strangers meet in a room, and forty-five minutes later, they leave as best friends. (What happens in that time?) Or the tale of the world’s youngest female billionaire, who credits her resilience to something her father asked the family at the dinner table. (What was that simple question?) Many of the defining moments in our lives are the result of accident or luck—but why would we leave our most meaningful, memorable moments to chance when we can create them? The Power of Moments shows us how to be the author of richer experiences.

Book The Anatomy of a Moment

  • Author : Javier Cercas
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA
  • Release : 2011-02-20

  • Pages : 417 pages

Download or read book The Anatomy of a Moment written by Javier Cercas and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2011-02-20 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In February 1981, Spain was still emerging from Franco's shadow, holding a democratic vote for the new prime minister. On the day of the vote in Parliament, while the session was being filmed by TV cameras, a band of right-wing soldiers burst in with automatic weapons, ordering everyone to get down. Only three men defied the order. For thirty-five minutes, as the cameras rolled, they stayed in their seats. Critically adored novelist Javier Cercas originally set out to write a novel about this pivotal moment, but determined it had already gained an air of myth, or, through the annual broadcast of video clips, had at least acquired the fictional taint of reality television. Cercas turned to nonfiction, and his vivid descriptions of the archival footage frame a narrative that traverses the line between history and art, creating a daring new account of this watershed moment in modern Spanish history. The Anatomy of a Moment caused a sensation upon its publication in Spain, selling hundreds of thousands of copies. The story will be new to many American readers, but the book stands resolutely on its own as a compelling literary inquest of national myth, personal memory, political spectacle, and reality itself.

Download or read book A Moment of Insight written by MD Suvrat Bhargave and published by . This book was released on 2019-03-15 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The flaw in Self-Help is the notion of Self A panic-ridden schoolboy. A high school cutter. A suicidal divorced mother of two. A conflicted young man with OCD and his grieving father. Dr. Bhargave has treated children and adults who sought psychiatry as a last resort to feeling empty, misunderstood, and unworthy. None came anticipating a spiritual conquest, and each wanted relief in the quickest way possible. While there was no magic pill for a cure, what evolved time and again through patience and vulnerability was the tale of hope through adversity. The result is A Moment of Insight. We all struggle with the same dilemmas. We all question life's purpose. We all feel overwhelmed. We all doubted our worthiness. While A Moment of Insight shines the spotlight on our collective wounds, it also dispenses the collective wisdom of thousands of seekers who dared to be vulnerable within the safe space of a psychiatrist's office. Through patient stories and personal accounts, this recollection takes the reader on a journey to calm the mind, fortify the spirit, and release the burdens of life. Each chapter offers practical strategies and thought-provoking narratives to not only understand and persevere through challenging dilemmas, but to see greater purpose in these times. At the beginning of every journey is the moment that incites change...a Moment of Insight.
