Book Microbial Plant Pathogens

Download or read book Microbial Plant Pathogens written by Perumal Narayanasamy and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2016-12-08 with total page 1176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Healthy seeds and propagules are the basic requirement for producing good grains, fruits and vegetables needed for human survival and perpetuation. Dispersal of microbial plant pathogens via seeds and propagules has assumed more importance than other modes of dispersal, as infected seeds and propagules have the potential to become the primary sources of carrying pathogen inoculum for subsequent crops. Several diseases transmitted through seeds and propagules have been shown to have the potential to damage economies as a result of huge quantitative and qualitative losses in numerous crops. Hence, it is essential to rapidly detect, identify and differentiate the microbial plant pathogens present in seeds and propagules precisely and reliably, using sensitive techniques. Microbial Plant Pathogens: Detection and Management in Seeds and Propagules provides a comprehensive resource on seed-borne and propagule-borne pathogens. Information on the biology of microbial pathogens, including genetic diversity, infection process and survival mechanisms of pathogens and epidemiology of diseases caused by them, are discussed critically and in detail to highlight weak links in the life cycles of the pathogens. Development of effective disease management systems, based on the principles of exclusion and eradication of pathogens and immunization of crop plants to enhance the levels of resistance of cultivars to diseases, has been effective to keep the pathogens at bay. The need for production of disease-free seeds/propagules has been emphasized to prevent the carryover of the inoculum to the next crop or introduction of the pathogens to other locations. Effectiveness of adopting simple cultural practices and development of cultivars resistant to diseases through traditional breeding methods or biotechnological approach have resulted in reducing the pathogen inoculum and disease incidence. Although application of different chemicals may reduce the disease incidence effectively, biological management of crop diseases, employing potential biological control agents have to be preferred to preserve the agroecosystems. Greater efforts have to be made to integrate compatible strategies to enhance the effectiveness of diseases management systems. Protocols appended at the end of relevant chapters form a unique feature of this book to enable the researchers to fine-tune their projects. This 2 volume set provides comprehensive and updated information about the economically-important groups of microbial plant pathogens carried by seed and propagules. Graduate students, researchers and teachers of plant pathology, plant protection, microbiology, plant breeding and genetics, agriculture and horticulture, as well as certification and quarantine personnel will find the information presented in this book useful.

Book Introduction to the New Mainframe Security

Download or read book Introduction to the New Mainframe Security written by Rica Weller and published by IBM Redbooks. This book was released on 2007-04-26 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides students of information systems with the background knowledge and skills necessary to begin using the basic security facilities of IBM System z. It enables a broad understanding of both the security principles and the hardware and software components needed to insure that the mainframe resources and environment are secure. It also explains how System z components interface with some non-System z components. A multi-user, multi-application, multi-task environment such as System z requires a different level of security than that typically encountered on a single-user platform. In addition, when a mainframe is connected in a network to other processors, a multi-layered approach to security is recommended. Students are assumed to have successfully completed introductory courses in computer system concepts. Although this course looks into all the operating systems on System z, the main focus is on IBM z/OS. Thus, it is strongly recommended that students have also completed an introductory course on z/OS. Others who will benefit from this course include experienced data processing professionals who have worked with non-mainframe-based platforms, as well as those who are familiar with some aspects of the mainframe environment or applications but want to learn more about the security and integrity facilities and advantages offered by the mainframe environment.

Book Benchmarking Transaction and Analytical Processing Systems

Download or read book Benchmarking Transaction and Analytical Processing Systems written by Anja Bog and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-07-11 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Systems for Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) and Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) are currently separate. The potential of the latest technologies and changes in operational and analytical applications over the last decade have given rise to the unification of these systems, which can be of benefit for both workloads. Research and industry have reacted and prototypes of hybrid database systems are now appearing. Benchmarks are the standard method for evaluating, comparing and supporting the development of new database systems. Because of the separation of OLTP and OLAP systems, existing benchmarks are only focused on one or the other. With the rise of hybrid database systems, benchmarks to assess these systems will be needed as well. Based on the examination of existing benchmarks, a new benchmark for hybrid database systems is introduced in this book. It is furthermore used to determine the effect of adding OLAP to an OLTP workload and is applied to analyze the impact of typically used optimizations in the historically separate OLTP and OLAP domains in mixed-workload scenarios.

Book Integrated Management Systems

Download or read book Integrated Management Systems written by Chad Kymal and published by Quality Press. This book was released on 2015-03-23 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Updated to the latest standard changes including ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, and ISO 45001. Includes guidance on integrating Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability. Organizations today are implementing stand-alone systems for their Quality Management Systems (ISO 9001, ISO/TS 16949, or AS9100), Environmental Management System (ISO 14001), Occupational Health & Safety (ISO 18001), and Food Safety Management Systems (FSSC 22000). Stand-alone systems refer to the use of isolated document management structures resulting in the duplication of processes within one site for each of the management standards-QMS, EMS, OHSAS, and FSMS. In other words, the stand-alone systems duplicate training processes, document control, and internal audit processes for each standard within the company. While the confusion and lack of efficiency resulting from this decision may not be readily apparent to the uninitiated, this book will show the reader that there is a tremendous loss of value associated with stand-alone management systems within an organization. This book expands the understanding of an integrated management system (IMS) globally. It not only saves money, but more importantly it contributes to the maintenance and efficiency of business processes and conformance standards such as ISO 9001, AS9100, ISO/TS 16949, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001 / ISO 45001, FSSC 22000, or other GFSI Standards.

Book Biosensors for Security and Bioterrorism Applications

Download or read book Biosensors for Security and Bioterrorism Applications written by Dimitrios P. Nikolelis and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-03-12 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers comprehensive coverage of biomarker/biosensor interactions for the rapid detection of weapons of bioterrorism, as well as current research trends and future developments and applications. It will be useful to researchers in this field who are interested in new developments in the early detection of such. The authors have collected very valuable and, in some aspects indispensable experience in the area i.e. in the development and application of portable biosensors for the detection of potential hazards. Most efforts are centered on the development of immunochemical assays including flow-lateral systems and engineered antibodies and their fragments. In addition, new approaches to the detection of enzyme inhibitors, direct enzymatic and microbial detection of metabolites and nutrients are elaborated. Some realized prototypes and concept devices applicable for the further use as a basis for the cooperation programs are also discussed. There is a particular focus on electrochemical and optical detection systems, including those employing carbon nanotubes, quantum dots and metalnanoparticles. The authors are well-known scientists and most of them are editors of respected international scientific journals. Although recently developed biosensors utilize known principles, the biosensing devices described can significantly shorten the time required for successful detection and enhance efforts in more time-consuming directions, e.g. remote sensing systems and validation in real-sample analysis. The authors describe advances in all stages of biosensor development: theselection of biochemical components, their use in biosensor assembly, detection principles and improvements and applications for real sample assays.
