Download or read book Smallholder System Innovations in Integrated Watershed Management SSI written by Yogesh Bhatt, and published by IWMI. This book was released on 2006-09-04 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapidly increasing population in the dynamic semi-arid agro-ecosystems in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) highlights the necessity to increase food production, while at the same time safe-guarding other ecological systems that support human development and well-being. In the past, increases in crop production to keep pace with population growth in this region were largely achieved through the expansion of cultivated area. Today, we must also consider ways of improving the productivity of already existing cropping systems. elopment-oriented research and describes the integrated research approach of the SSI program, its interconnected research projects - their scope and methodologies

Book A Process for Engaging Farmers in Watershed Management

Download or read book A Process for Engaging Farmers in Watershed Management written by Marli Rupe and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A nutrient reduction work plan is being developed for the South Lake Champlain watershed that will address the water quality impairments to Lake Champlain. 35% of the phosphorus runoff into the Lake from this watershed is estimated to come from agriculture so it is imperative that agricultural practices be considered in this work plan. The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate assumed impediments to farmer participation in a water quality improvement planning process and develop a public participation process that will allow for adequate agricultural representation. A survey was conducted of 31 farmers in the South Lake watershed. The survey asked about farmers’ attitudes towards water quality issues and planning processes in general and specifically about public participation processes. The survey was conducted in person as well as by mail, which allowed for substantial qualitative feedback. It is not only important to engage farmers in this planning process; it must do more than just meet structural needs, such as time or location of meetings and must clearly demonstrate to farmers the value of their input and provide a level of empowerment that validates their time and resource commitment to the process. The process must emphasize the value of shared education gained through the process. Education of both the farmers and planning sponsors increases the decision quality, as well as potentially increasing trust while decreasing conflict in project implementation. The process should include non-agricultural contributors to water quality impairment. Lastly, the process should provide multiple methods for public participation including representation of the agricultural industry by local organizations or individuals. A successful public participation process for nutrient reduction would provide educational and collaborative opportunities for improvement resulting in an implementation process that achieves water quality improvement goals with decreased conflict and increased understanding of the comprehensive watershed issues.

Book Integrated Watershed Management in Rainfed Agriculture

Download or read book Integrated Watershed Management in Rainfed Agriculture written by Suhas P. Wani and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2011-09-16 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive presentation of the realization of improved rainfed agriculture yield in semi-arid and dry land areas. The incentive of watershed programs is to increase the return on investment with over 20% for 65% of the projects that are currently underperforming. Besides techniques to improve the livelihood of the many small-scale farmers in developing countries, it includes examples and case studies for further support. The methods discussed have recently shown to be successful and economically remunerative in India and in various African countries. Intended for professionals (investors, policy makers), researchers and (post) graduate students working on dry land and sustainable agriculture and water and natural resources management. Suited for courses in dry land agriculture, soil and water management and watershed development.

Book Watershed Management for Water Quality Improvement

Download or read book Watershed Management for Water Quality Improvement written by I. R. Willett and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Land and water management is increasingly being based on watersheds. The watershed approach is being promoted as a means of bringing about environmental improvements, particularly at scales that require changes by multiple landholders. This report provides an outline of the implementation of watershed programs in the United States, with particular reference to examples in New York State, including the regulatory framework that largely drives implementation.

Book Mitigating Land Degradation and Improving Livelihoods

Download or read book Mitigating Land Degradation and Improving Livelihoods written by Feras Ziadat and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research presented in this book demonstrates how an integrated ‘systems’ approach to farming in the watershed context increases the effectiveness of a production system and improves people’s livelihoods. It takes an integrated approach, using one watershed in Ethiopia as a ‘laboratory’ or model case study to focus on the interaction and interdependence between land, water, crops, soil, water harvesting, supplemental irrigation, forestry, socio-economic aspects, livestock and farm tools. A range of linked studies was conducted with active participation of the farming community and other relevant stakeholders, such as the local offices of agriculture and extension services. The starting point for the work was the premise that previous efforts to solve farming system constraints using a piecemeal approach or discipline-specific focus have not been successful. Thus, addressing agricultural and environmental constraints through a holistic approach enables the generation of comprehensive technologies to sustainably improve the natural resource base and livelihoods of communities. The authors discuss trade-offs and resource allocation, demonstrating how the environment can be protected while also improving productivity. A unique feature is the methodology developed for the selection of suitable fields and farmers to implement new approaches or improved technologies, to achieve production increases while reducing degradation of sensitive agro-ecosystems. It is also shown how the watershed scale is a valuable basis for assessing the protection of fragile lands.

Book Integrated Watershed Management

Download or read book Integrated Watershed Management written by H. M. Gregersen and published by CABI. This book was released on with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As human populations expand and demands upon natural resources increase, the need to manage the environments in which people live becomes more important but also more difficult. Land and water management is especially critical as the use of upstream watersheds can drastically affect large numbers of people living in downstream watersheds. An integrated approach that stresses both the importance of participatory planning and the institutional and technical constraints and opportunities is therefore necessary. The institutional and technical context for managing watersheds and river basins, including the involvement of both the public and private sectors, is also examined.

Book How to Build Better Agricultural Conservation Programs to Protect Water Quality

Download or read book How to Build Better Agricultural Conservation Programs to Protect Water Quality written by Deanna Lynn Osmond and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "From 2004 to 2006, the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) (formerly the Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service) and the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service jointly funded 13 watershed projects across the nation. These NIFA projects were established to evaluate the effects of agricultural conservation practices on water quality at the watershed scale. The overall goal of these watershed studies was to determine the measurable effects of agricultural conservation practices on spatial patterns and trends in water quality at the watershed scale. Conducted under the name Conservation Effects Assessment Project (CEAP), the projects were intended to increase understanding of the following: How the timing, location, and suite of implemented agricultural conservation practices affect water quality at the watershed scale ; How conservation practices implemented in a watershed interact with respect to their effects on water quality ; What social and economic factors facilitate or impede implementation of conservation practices ; The optimal set of conservation practices and their optimal placement within the watershed needed to achieve water quality goals. As these 13 NIFA-CEAP watershed studies were nearing completion, the USDA NIFA funded another project to synthesize the information gained from the projects in order to build an aggregate knowledge base that both evaluated impacts of conservation practices and programs on water resources in order to improve the management of agricultural landscapes and achieve environmental goals that could inform future policy decisions. This book describes the outcome of the synthesis effort."--Preface.
