Book excerpt: The research reported here represents the first year of a three-year effort to gain a better understanding of the processes that contribute to Team Evolution and Maturation (TEAM) in operational Navy contexts. The ultimate objective of this research is to provide a basis for enhancing the training, performance, and unit maintenance functions of Navy teams. The general focus of this effort is to measure team evolution and maturation as team members gain experience and knowledge about tasks, each other, and external environmental demands within the context of an operational training scenario. Existing models and methodologies have been synthesized from the team-performance-team-training literatures as a basis for the development of a working model of team evolution and maturation. Based on this model, prototype procedures and methods for measuring team development have been defined and developed. These measurement technologies have been tested at the Naval Gunfire Support Department (NGFS) at the Naval Amphibious School, Little Creek. Results of this effort indicate that the developing concepts, methods, and procedures are viable tools for the study of team training and performance. The results support the proposed stage model of team development and provide a sound foundation for the development of interventions for the enhancement of team training.

Book excerpt: This report represents culmination of three years of research on Team evaluation and Maturation (TEAM) in the Navy. Participants in this research during a period of three years were ships team members engaged in training and their instructors at naval Gunfire Support, Anti-Submarine Warfare, and Guided Missile schools in the Norfolk area. The primary objectives of this research were to: (1) delineate the process variables that comprise teamwork ; (2) develop a set of instruments to measure these variables; (3) increase the understanding of how teamwork develops (i.e., how teams evolve and mature) over the course of training; (4) develop ways to diagnose, correct, and enhance team performance in training; and (5) examine the generalizability of the findings when compared to previous efforts. These objectives were organized into two sequential phases of research. In Phase I, a longitudinal model of team evolution and maturation was incrementally refined and empirically validated. The model then used as a framework for construction and validation of instruments used to obtain data at several points in the course of training from team members and their instructors on behaviors exhibited, performance levels attained, and perceptions emerging. Phase II research utilized the products of Phase I to identify dimensions of team behavior that were: (1) critical to team work development and (2) reveal patterns of team training needs across a substantial portion of teams. Six intervention strategies were designed to address those team development needs for which cost-effective and performance-enhancing opportunities had been identified. (sdw).

Several participants at the conference felt that a book on team performance measurement would be of interest to a broader audience, and they began looking for authors in diverse disciplines. Some of the chapters in this book closely follow material presented at the conference. Many others report work that was done subsequently or was done by authors not present at the conference. The result is a book rich in its diversity of approaches to measurement and which contains illustrations of many different teams. This book is the first of its kind to bring together a collection of scholars and practitioners focusing solely on the problem of team performance measurement. Although much has been written about team and group effectiveness, little theoretical and empirical progress has been made in the measurement of team processes and outcomes. The book represents a major step forward both theoretically and empirically. Section 1 provides a rich theoretical basis for measurement, including designing measures to be used in team training, measures of shared mental models, and measures of team workload. Section 2 addresses methodological developments and issues, including the design and validation of simulations, surveys, and observer checklists. It also deals with issues such as the consistency of team performance and task and level of analysis issues. Section 3 provides applications and illustrations of team performance measures in such teams as nuclear power control room operators, theater technical crews, and aircraft cockpit crews. Section 4 offers guidance for anyone interested in developing their own measures of team performance. There are both theoretical and practical reasons for the current interest in teams. Psychological research interest in groups and teams has returned and is now a thriving area. Self-managed work groups and semi-autonomous work groups have become increasingly common in industry, so there is an increased interest in team functioning from a practical standpoint. This volume's purpose is to describe recent advances in the measurement of team performance, both process and outcome. Several of the chapters provide recommendations on how, when, and why to measure aspects of teams. In addition to describing what is currently known, the book also discusses what remains to be known and what needs to be done next. The book is intended primarily for those interested in research about team processes and outcomes--researchers and academics who possess a basic understanding of statistics and psychometrics. The bulk of research reported has applied aims which provide much practical information, such as how to design simulations, rating forms, and dimensions of team performance useful for feedback to many kinds of teams. In addition, there are examples from several different kinds of teams, including aircrews, nuclear power plant operators, hospital workers, ship combat information center groups, and theater technicians.
