Book World Development Report 2018

Download or read book World Development Report 2018 written by World Bank Group and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every year, the World Bank’s World Development Report (WDR) features a topic of central importance to global development. The 2018 WDR—LEARNING to Realize Education’s Promise—is the first ever devoted entirely to education. And the time is right: education has long been critical to human welfare, but it is even more so in a time of rapid economic and social change. The best way to equip children and youth for the future is to make their learning the center of all efforts to promote education. The 2018 WDR explores four main themes: First, education’s promise: education is a powerful instrument for eradicating poverty and promoting shared prosperity, but fulfilling its potential requires better policies—both within and outside the education system. Second, the need to shine a light on learning: despite gains in access to education, recent learning assessments reveal that many young people around the world, especially those who are poor or marginalized, are leaving school unequipped with even the foundational skills they need for life. At the same time, internationally comparable learning assessments show that skills in many middle-income countries lag far behind what those countries aspire to. And too often these shortcomings are hidden—so as a first step to tackling this learning crisis, it is essential to shine a light on it by assessing student learning better. Third, how to make schools work for all learners: research on areas such as brain science, pedagogical innovations, and school management has identified interventions that promote learning by ensuring that learners are prepared, teachers are both skilled and motivated, and other inputs support the teacher-learner relationship. Fourth, how to make systems work for learning: achieving learning throughout an education system requires more than just scaling up effective interventions. Countries must also overcome technical and political barriers by deploying salient metrics for mobilizing actors and tracking progress, building coalitions for learning, and taking an adaptive approach to reform.

Book Private Tutoring Across the Mediterranean

Download or read book Private Tutoring Across the Mediterranean written by Mark Bray and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Private tutoring—supplementary, out-of-school instruction offered at a fee to individuals or groups—represents a substantial household expenditure, even in systems that claim to have free public education. It plays out across, alongside, and even within some school systems. Emerging as a ‘shadow education’, private tutoring now operates as a system and industry crossing national, regional, and social-class boundaries. Private tutoring is provided through different modes of delivery including the internet. Policy makers, parents, teachers, trade unions, corporations, community associations, and students are implicated in the private tutoring industry. The debates over private tutoring are therefore part of the larger struggles over the ends of education in just and equitable societies. The authors in this volume address diverse national settings of private tutoring across the Mediterranean, and examine its political, economic, social, and cultural underpinnings. They draw on a range of conceptual frameworks, and deploy a variety of research methods to problematize the multifaceted relationships between tutoring, learning, and equity. The volume captures a multiplicity of voices, and focuses on some of the central challenges facing education in pluralistic societies

This book was released on 2023-11-30 with total page 1009 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developing countries may not have full-fledged welfare states like those we find in Europe, but certainly they have welfare state systems. For comparative social policy research, the term "welfare state systems" has many advantages, as there are numerous different types/models of welfare state systems around the world. This revised and expanded second edition brings together leading experts to discuss social policy in 32 countries/regions around the world: from the most advanced welfare state systems in Scandinavia and Western Central Europe to the developing powers of Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Mexico, and Russia. Country-specific chapters provide in general a historical overview, discuss major characteristics of the welfare state system, and analyze country-specific problems, as well as critical current and future trends for further discussions, while also providing one (additional) major focal point/issue for greater in-depth analysis. Including new country case studies on Mali, South Africa, Iceland, Spain, Italy, Greece, and Vietnam, this book is reframed around urgent contemporary issues including migration and rising social inequalities, LGBTQIA+ rights, universal basic income, and transboundary social policy. Book Poverty Reduction and the World Bank

Download or read book Poverty Reduction and the World Bank written by and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: QUOTEEnsuring that the poor will reap some benefit from this much anticipated post-crisis recovery period will require the efforts and collaboration of governments, international financial institutions, the private sector, and civil society, both in crisis and non-crisis countries.QUOTE-James D. Wolfensohn, PresidentPoverty reduction is now more firmly at the center of the Bank's country assistance strategies, with increased efforts to improve the quality of poverty assessments, enhanced monitoring and evaluation of poverty outcomes, and the integration of quantitative with participatory methods. This annual publication reports on World Bank activities in fiscal year 1998, which continued to be aimed at fostering labor-based growth while investing in the development of human capital and providing safety nets. At the same time, Bank activities reflected several new themes: the need to protect the poor from shocks, the role of institutions in implementing policies and providing services, and the importance of participation, partnerships and social capital. The amounts lent under the Program of Targeted Interventions (PTI) has grown from 29 percent of total investment lending in fiscal year 1997 to 40 percent in fiscal 1998, reflecting increased PTI lending in education, social protection, the environment, and to countries in South Asia. The amounts lent for poverty-focused adjustment operations also increased from 52 to 64 percent of total adjustment lending, reflecting efforts to protect the poor hit by the recent crisis in East Asia. The report concludes that the East Asian crisis, as well as other events of the last decade-persistent conflict in some of the poorest African countries, the continuing pain of transition in former socialist economies, and the experience with policy implementation across the world-call for a re-examination of the Bank's poverty reduction strategy, building on the strategy presented in World Development Report 1990 but incorporating new elements as well. This work has begun in preparation for the World Development Report on Poverty which will be published in September 2000.
