Book Enhancing the Resilience of the Nation s Electricity System

Download or read book Enhancing the Resilience of the Nation s Electricity System written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans' safety, productivity, comfort, and convenience depend on the reliable supply of electric power. The electric power system is a complex "cyber-physical" system composed of a network of millions of components spread out across the continent. These components are owned, operated, and regulated by thousands of different entities. Power system operators work hard to assure safe and reliable service, but large outages occasionally happen. Given the nature of the system, there is simply no way that outages can be completely avoided, no matter how much time and money is devoted to such an effort. The system's reliability and resilience can be improved but never made perfect. Thus, system owners, operators, and regulators must prioritize their investments based on potential benefits. Enhancing the Resilience of the Nation's Electricity System focuses on identifying, developing, and implementing strategies to increase the power system's resilience in the face of events that can cause large-area, long-duration outages: blackouts that extend over multiple service areas and last several days or longer. Resilience is not just about lessening the likelihood that these outages will occur. It is also about limiting the scope and impact of outages when they do occur, restoring power rapidly afterwards, and learning from these experiences to better deal with events in the future.

Book China s Energy Security Analysis Assessment And Improvement

Download or read book China s Energy Security Analysis Assessment And Improvement written by Jingzheng Ren and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2020-12-18 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China is the second-largest economy in the world yet it faces serious energy security challenges due to the country's reliance on coal, a fuel with multiple environmental and social problems. Moreover, since 2017 China has become the world's largest crude oil importer, greatly increasing its reliance on imported energy. The International Energy Agency has defined energy security as 'the uninterrupted availability of energy sources at an affordable price,' employing metrics in various dimensions such as availability, affordability, accessibility and acceptability to measure the energy security of different nations. Accordingly, the assessment, analysis and improvement of energy security is a complex problem. China's Energy Security aims to resolve this problem by answering three important questions:

Book The Energy Security Dilemma

Download or read book The Energy Security Dilemma written by David Bernell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the energy security of the United States – its ability to obtain reliable, affordable, and sufficient supplies of energy while meeting the goals of achieving environmental sustainability and protecting national security. The economic and national security of the United States is largely dependent upon fossil fuels, especially oil. Without significant changes to current practices and patterns of energy production and use, the domestic and global impacts – security, economic, and environmental – are expected to become worse over the coming decades. Growing US and global energy demands need to be met and the anticipated impacts of climate change must be avoided – all at an affordable price, while avoiding conflict with other nations that have similar goals. Bernell and Simon examine the current and prospective landscape of American energy policy, from tax incentives and mandates at the federal and state level to promote wind and solar power, to support for fracking in the oil and natural gas industries, to foreign policies designed to ensure that markets and cooperative agreements — not armies, navies and rival governments — control the supply and price of energy resources. They look at the variety of energy related challenges facing the United States and argue that public policies designed to enhance energy security have at the same time produced greater insecurity in terms of fostering rising (and potentially unmet) energy needs, national security threats, economic vulnerability, and environmental dangers.

Book Strengthening U S National Security With Clean Energy Innovation

Download or read book Strengthening U S National Security With Clean Energy Innovation written by and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Renewable Energy Laboratory's (NREL's) work in strategic energy security is focused on keeping the United States secure and its citizens safe by applying expertise in clean energy systems and technologies to prevent energy system disruptions from any source, natural or human. NREL was founded in response to the energy security impact of the 1973 oil crisis, when it was clear that energy resources beyond foreign oil were needed. Recognizing that energy security, an intrinsic element of U.S. national security, can be achieved through innovation and renewable resources that are local, abundant, and reliable, the Solar Energy Research Institute was established in 1977. The institute would later be named NREL, setting the course to improve the country's access to independently owned and renewable energy-and strengthening the nation's energy security.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Energy Transformation towards Sustainability explores how researchers, businesses and policymakers can explore and usefully improve energy systems and energy consumption behavior, both to reflect the reality of climate change and related environmental degradation and to adapt to the expanding periphery of renewable energy technologies. It introduces the reader to a suite of potential policy pathways to the necessary transformation in societal energy consumption, usage and behavior. Solutions discussed include energy efficiency, energy security, the role of political leadership, green public policy, and the transition to renewable energy sources. International contributions address the range and depth of current research from a position of advocacy for 'energy stewardship' as the driver of this transformation. Case studies illustrate the range of various countries to diminish energy use. Finally, policy avenues are covered in depth. Reviews the interrelationship between economic growth, energy consumption and climate change Uses a wide variety of case studies to support practical implementation across national energy systems Highlights a wide spectrum of urgent issues, including threats related to energy use and secure and sustainable development Contains contributions that reflect a breadth and depth of scholarship from international backgrounds

Book Energy Efficiency and Energy Security in the Commonwealth of Independent States

Download or read book Energy Efficiency and Energy Security in the Commonwealth of Independent States written by United Nations. Economic Commission for Europe and published by United Nations Publications. This book was released on 2001 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study represents the first phase of a project being implemented under the framework of the Operational Activity Programme, developed by the UN Economic Commission for Europe in co-operation with the member countries of the CIS. The purpose of this initial study is to assess the potential for energy conservation in the CIS to the year 2010, and to examine how improvements in energy efficiency can enhance their energy security. The study concludes that three key factors will determine how large the energy efficiency improvements will be: the extent of economic, scientific and technological co-operation to establish liberal and competitive markets for energy resources; the time-scale and scope of activities; and the amount, priority and cost-effectiveness of investments made.

Book The Energy and Security Nexus

Download or read book The Energy and Security Nexus written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between energy and security has been receiving increasing attention over the last few years. Energy literally drives the global economy. Societies rely on it for everything from advanced medical equipment to heating, cooling, and irrigation. Whether it derives from advanced nuclear reactors in developed nations or simple wood stoves in the developing world, energy is recognized as vital to human welfare. It influences our economic, political, and social policies. Possessing or not possessing sufficient energy determines a state's political and economic power. Competition for energy has been, is, and will be a source of conflict. The choices nation-states make when it comes to energy will have a profound bearing on a wide range of security concerns, from nuclear proliferation to climate change.
