Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grow Woodies and Harvest profits for Decades Woody ornamentals, also known as woody cuts, or simply "woodies," are trees and shrubs whose branches are harvested and sold for floral arrangements and craft products such as wreaths. Most woodies have colorful stems, like Red Twig Dogwood, unusual stems like Curly Willow or attractive berries, buds or flowers. Unlike annual plants like flowers and vegetables, woodies can be harvested over and over again for many years. Most woodies have a lifespan of 20-60 years. New plants are produced from cuttings, so it's easy to replace older plants or produce potted woodies for sale to local buyers or the local garden center. Woodies can also provide a year-round income, as different species are ready to harvest during all four seasons. Some of the well-known woodies include holly, nandina and wax myrtle in winter, pussy willows, forysthia and witch hazel in spring, smoke tree, nine bark, hydrangea and filberts in summer and boxwood and beautyberry in the fall. In This Book, You'll Discover: Top 22 woody ornamentals for new growers. Top 10 woodies that produce up to 100 stems per plant. How to pick the best woodies for your local climate and soil. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the present era, the man has progressed very rapidly but due to the unending and multifarious, malpractices and manifold increase in human population; the forests are depleted and thus decreased to a vast extent. To increase the area under forest, a good and healthy forest nursery is very important for afforestation/ planting and thus getting good stock for future programme. Thus raising of nursery, of many species of trees grow very slow. If, the seeds are sown directly in the planting-out site, weed infestation may be an acute problem. The foreign/exotic species, e.g. Eucalyptus, Populus, etc. are raised first in nursery and therefore, planted/ transplanted in the field/ planting-out site afterwards. In this book," FOREST NURSERY- How to Raise and Manage" mainly two types of forest nursery have been discussed in details, viz., (a) Bare rooted seedlings nursery and (b) Containerised seedings nursery. The Present Book ," FOREST NURSERY- How to Raise and Manage", is a very sincere attempt to explore the good knowledge and vast information. This book has been written very consciously and earnestly in a very lucid language which can be understood by less educated nursery men. It is very much expected that the present book will prove very helpful in raising and managing the forest Nursery. Moreover, this is a very handy and very informative book for students, teachers, forest scientists, nursery men and all concerned with the subject.

Book Nursery Manual for Native Plants

Download or read book Nursery Manual for Native Plants written by R. Kasten Dumroese and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2001, the Forest Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), through its Virtual Center for Reforestation, Nurseries, and Genetics Resources (RNGR), invited Native Americans from across the United States to attend the Western Forest and Conservation Nursery Association annual meeting. About 25 tribal members, representing 20 tribes, attended the meeting at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado. The following year, a similar meeting was held in Olympia, Washington, and tribal members initiated a Tribal Nursery Council and requested that RNGR facilitate the organization. During 2003, RNGR requested information from 560 tribes across the United States, seeking specific information on tribes' needs for native plants, facilities, training, and so on. Results from the responding 77 tribes were incorporated into the Tribal Nursery Needs Assessment. Based on the results of that questionnaire, and input from tribal members attending the 2003 Intertribal Nursery Council meeting in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, it was agreed that a nursery handbook was needed. That fall, planning began for writing the manual, loosely based on Agriculture Handbook 674, The Container Tree Nursery Manual, but with special attention to the uniqueness of Native American cultures.
