Book Education Planning and Management and the Use of Geographical Information Systems

Download or read book Education Planning and Management and the Use of Geographical Information Systems written by John M. Mendelsohn and published by UNESCO. This book was released on 1996 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Education depends on resources that may be tangible (teachers, facilities, textbooks, money) or intangible (political will, parental support). Considerations of space, usually in the form of questions containing the word "where", constitute another resource issue that confronts educational managers almost daily. Questions like "Where are new schools needed?" and "Where are the best bus routes for pupil transportation?" require answers that are often only available after exhaustive and expensive research. A Geographical Information System (GIS) is a computer program designed to capture, collect, store, and process the type of information needed to answer the "where" questions, and to make that information available to educational planners. Following explanations of maps, spatial information, attribute information, and ways to relate these through the use of geocodes, this book provides detailed instructions on developing a GIS and extracting and analyzing data for use in educational management. Maps are emphasized as a particularly accessible GIS product, and situations that exist in developing countries frequently appear as illustrative examples in the text. Recommendations are made for computer hardware and software, as well as personnel and staffing. (Contains 20 figures and 27 references.) (MKW)

Book Reaching the Marginalized

Download or read book Reaching the Marginalized written by and published by UNESCO. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children at risk of marginalization in education are found in all societies. At first glance, The lives of these children may appear poles apart. The daily experiences of slum dwellers in Kenya, ethnic minority children in Viet Nam and a Roma child in Hungary are very different. What they have in common are missed opportunities to develop their potential, realize their hopes and build a better future through education.A decade has passed since world leaders adopted the Education for All goals. While progress has been made, millions of children are still missing out on their right to education. Reaching the marginalized identifies some of the root causes of disadvantage, both within education and beyond, and provides examples of targeted policies and practices that successfully combat exclusion. Set against the backdrop of the global economic crisis, The Report calls for a renewed financing commitment by aid donors and recipient governments alike to meet the Education for All goals by 2015.This is the eighth edition of the annual EFA Global Monitoring Report. The Report includes statistical indicators on all levels of education in more than 200 countries and territories.

Book Geographical Information Systems for Urban and Regional Planning

Download or read book Geographical Information Systems for Urban and Regional Planning written by Henk J. Scholten and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In August 1989, a Summer Institute was held at the Academie van Bouwkunst, the seventeenth century home of Amsterdam's School of Architecture, Town Planning and Landscape. The meeting brought together experts in Geographical Information Systems from throughout the world to address an international audience of planners. The contents of this book reflect many of the themes that were presented and discussed at the conference. The Summer Institute, let alone this volume, would not have been possible without the support of the International Association for the Development and Management of Existing and New Towns (INTNAIVN), the International Society of City and Regional Planners (ISoCaRP), The National Physical Planning Agency of the Netherlands (RPD) and the Berlage Studio. We wish to acknowledge the assistance provided by these organisations and by the various sponsors: The Ministry of Housing, Physical Planning and Environment, the Municipality of Amsterdam, Logisterion b.v., ESRI, UNISYS, MABON b.v., SPSS, PRIME Computer Inc., PANDATA. The provision of hardware facilities by the various computer companies allowed immensely valuable 'hands on' experience to be gained by all the participants.

Book The Routledge Handbook of Planning Megacities in the Global South

Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of Planning Megacities in the Global South written by Deden Rukmana and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2020-06-04 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cities are now home to 55% of the world’s population, and that number is rising. Urban populations across the world will continue to grow, including in megacities with populations over ten million. In 2016 there were 31 megacities globally, according to the United Nations’ World Cities Report, with 24 of those cities located in the Global South. That number is expected to rise to 41 by 2030, with all ten new megacities in the Global South where the processes of urbanization are intrinsically distinct from those in the Global North. The Routledge Handbook of Planning Megacities in the Global South provides rigorous comparative analyses, discussing the challenges, processes, best practices, and initiatives of urbanization in Middle America, South America, the Middle East, Africa, South Asia, East Asia, and Southeast Asia. This book is indispensable reading for students and scholars of urban planning, and its significance as a resource will only continue to grow as urbanization reshapes the global population.

Book Directions in Educational Planning

Download or read book Directions in Educational Planning written by Mark Bray and published by United Nations Education, Scientific & Cultural Organization. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nature of educational planning has evolved significantly during the past few decades. For many years, it generally relied on grand models focusing on macro-planning. Today, the field is increasingly defined by decentralized approaches, non-government funding, and cross-national forces in the context of globalization. IIEP has played a lead role in contributing to conceptual issues, developing methodologies, and facilitating capacity development. In 2008, the Institute organized a symposium to discuss the changing context and content of educational planning, reflecting on continuities and changes in the past and looking ahead to the future. This publication is based on selected papers presented at the symposium.
