Book WHO Guidelines on Hand Hygiene in Health Care

Download or read book WHO Guidelines on Hand Hygiene in Health Care written by World Health Organization and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The WHO Guidelines on Hand Hygiene in Health Care provide health-care workers (HCWs), hospital administrators and health authorities with a thorough review of evidence on hand hygiene in health care and specific recommendations to improve practices and reduce transmission of pathogenic microorganisms to patients and HCWs. The present Guidelines are intended to be implemented in any situation in which health care is delivered either to a patient or to a specific group in a population. Therefore, this concept applies to all settings where health care is permanently or occasionally performed, such as home care by birth attendants. Definitions of health-care settings are proposed in Appendix 1. These Guidelines and the associated WHO Multimodal Hand Hygiene Improvement Strategy and an Implementation Toolkit (http://www.who.int/gpsc/en/) are designed to offer health-care facilities in Member States a conceptual framework and practical tools for the application of recommendations in practice at the bedside. While ensuring consistency with the Guidelines recommendations, individual adaptation according to local regulations, settings, needs, and resources is desirable. This extensive review includes in one document sufficient technical information to support training materials and help plan implementation strategies. The document comprises six parts.

Book Improving Hand Hygiene Compliance by Healthcare Workers

Download or read book Improving Hand Hygiene Compliance by Healthcare Workers written by Patrick Kimuyu and published by . This book was released on 2017-11-17 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific Essay from the year 2017 in the subject Medicine - Public Health, grade: 1, Egerton University (Public Health), course: Infection Control, language: English, abstract: Hand hygiene has emerged as the only single strategy that has the potential for reducing hospital-acquired infections. Evidence indicates that hospital-acquired infections pose an immense hazard for patients within the hospital environment, and healthcare workers, including nurses are involved in the transmission of these infections. This explains why health organizations such as WHO, The Joint Commission and Centers for Disease Control have embarked on spearheading education and awareness on hand hygiene. Despite these efforts, evidence indicates that healthcare workers continue to exhibit low levels of hand hygiene compliance. Therefore, this essay will demonstrate how nurses can assume a leadership role within the hospital settings in accordance with the health safety standards (National Safety and Quality Health Services) as outlined by the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care [ACSQHC]. It will be discussed how nurses can adopt hand hygiene strategies to improve compliance to the national hand hygiene initiative in the wards as one of the key approaches for preventing and controlling hospital-acquired infections.

Book Using Simple Visual Cues to Increase Hand Hygiene Compliance

Download or read book Using Simple Visual Cues to Increase Hand Hygiene Compliance written by Donna Nyack and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Healthcare-associated infections are a world-wide healthcare crisis afflicting countless people around the globe. In the United States alone, nosocomial infections kill a staggering number of patients and sicken countless others (Smith, Lokhurst, 2009). Naturally, this generates a great deal of concern in many health care settings and is a primary concern to those in the medical community, especially since the safety of patients is being compromised. While not all hospital-acquired infections can be prevented, the vast majority can. The startling reality is that studies have proven most of the infections acquired in the hospital setting are transmitted from patient to patient via the hands of healthcare workers (Smith, Lokhurst, 2009). Hand sanitization, has long been deemed a first-line of protection in the prevention of these infections. Of equal significance, has been the struggle for compliance with hand hygiene procedures that are vital to the safety of patients in the hospital. According to the results of a European hospital study, nurses' practice with hand hygiene is weak, and went on to reiterate, the compliance level of the staff is unacceptable (Malliarou, Sarafis, Zyga, Constantinidis, 2013). As evidence suggests, there is an urgent need to undertake robust methodologies in order to effectively increase hygiene compliance to safeguard patients. This written proposal presents the following; in the emergency department (ED), will the use of visual cues, in comparison to only standard education, actually increase hand hygiene compliance for the ED staff, within 6 months? There are many reasons why staff fail to clean their hands consistently and one identified barrier happens to be ineffective or insufficient education (Joint Commission, 2010). Standard education has been utilized in many hospitals and yet, it is well published that hand hygiene compliance rates remain inadequate. It is proposed that visual cues are needed to encourage health care workers to disinfect their hands in an effort to increase hand hygiene compliance. According to a 2014 study, the absence or presence of reminders of hand washing in public restrooms and a university campus were studied to determine if hand washing compliance was affected, and the results were a resounding, yes! The results confirmed, creating obvious environments and layouts that provide visual cues and convenience for workers has been associated with increased hand washing rates (Ford, Boyer, Menachemi, Huerta, 2014). In order to employ this proposal, hospital leadership teams will be provided with an implementation plan consisting of a step by step proposition of recommended interventions such as displaying visual cues at the points of patient care. Ongoing evaluations will be conducted throughout each phase to ascertain effectiveness and identify areas of improvement. Plans will be disseminated to identified stakeholders to encourage support and ongoing involvement.

Abstract: Introduction: Hand hygiene, the most effective and economical way to prevent the transmission of many bacteria and viruses in healthcare settings, yet, its compliance rate remained unacceptably poor in many countries. Compliance with hand hygiene among healthcare workers increased substantially during outbreak of serious acute respiratory symptoms (SARS) in 2003 but decreased to the baseline after SARS, to improve compliance rate sustainable, many hand hygiene intervention programs have been established since 2003. However, the effectiveness of these programs were in big variations. The objectives of this review were to identify the effectiveness of these hand hygiene intervention programs. Methods: This review was conducted using the search engines - PubMed. The key words "hand hygiene," "hand-washing," "compliance," "healthcare personnel," and "program*" were used for searching literature published from 2003 to July 2012.. Forty-Seven articles were initially obtained. After screening and reviewing of these articles,9 articles met the requirements for inclusion and exclusion criteria were included in this review. The outcome measure was set as the differences and relative ratios in the observed hand hygiene compliance rate before and after intervention. Results: Results showed that 8 hand hygiene programs were effective while 1 programme was ineffective in improving hand hygiene compliance rates. Of the eight studies that reported improvement in compliance with hand hygiene, improvement in compliance rate after the interventions was ranged from (24% to 50%) while the relative ratio of compliance (after vs. before intervention) was ranged from 1.78 to 4. The study that reported no improvement in compliance with hand hygiene had a relative high naseline hand hygiene compliance rate of 61% Conclusion: Hand hygiene programs that improve compliance rate among healthcare workers were effective overall. The effectiveness of hand hygiene programs seemed to be positively associated with the numbers of intervention types involved. Research on non-compliance and intrapersonal behavior on hand hygiene was suggested for future investigation. DOI: 10.5353/th_b4842498 Subjects: Hand washing Hand - Care and hygiene

Book Caring for People who Sniff Petrol Or Other Volatile Substances

Download or read book Caring for People who Sniff Petrol Or Other Volatile Substances written by National Health and Medical Research Council (Australia) and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These guidelines provide recommendations that outline the critical aspects of infection prevention and control. The recommendations were developed using the best available evidence and consensus methods by the Infection Control Steering Committee. They have been prioritised as key areas to prevent and control infection in a healthcare facility. It is recognised that the level of risk may differ according to the different types of facility and therefore some recommendations should be justified by risk assessment. When implementing these recommendations all healthcare facilities need to consider the risk of transmission of infection and implement according to their specific setting and circumstances.

Book When Doctors Become Patients

Download or read book When Doctors Become Patients written by Robert Klitzman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many doctors, their role as powerful healer precludes thoughts of ever getting sick themselves. When they do, it initiates a profound shift of awareness-- not only in their sense of their selves, which is invariably bound up with the "invincible doctor" role, but in the way that they view their patients and the doctor-patient relationship. While some books have been written from first-person perspectives on doctors who get sick-- by Oliver Sacks among them-- and TV shows like "House" touch on the topic, never has there been a "systematic, integrated look" at what the experience is like for doctors who get sick, and what it can teach us about our current health care system and more broadly, the experience of becoming ill.The psychiatrist Robert Klitzman here weaves together gripping first-person accounts of the experience of doctors who fall ill and see the other side of the coin, as a patient. The accounts reveal how dramatic this transformation can be-- a spiritual journey for some, a radical change of identity for others, and for some a new way of looking at the risks and benefits of treatment options. For most however it forever changes the way they treat their own patients. These questions are important not just on a human interest level, but for what they teach us about medicine in America today. While medical technology advances, the health care system itself has become more complex and frustrating, and physician-patient trust is at an all-time low. The experiences offered here are unique resource that point the way to a more humane future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique and engaging open access title provides a compelling and ground-breaking account of the patient safety movement in the United States, told from the perspective of one of its most prominent leaders, and arguably the movement’s founder, Lucian L. Leape, MD. Covering the growth of the field from the late 1980s to 2015, Dr. Leape details the developments, actors, organizations, research, and policy-making activities that marked the evolution and major advances of patient safety in this time span. In addition, and perhaps most importantly, this book not only comprehensively details how and why human and systems errors too often occur in the process of providing health care, it also promotes an in-depth understanding of the principles and practices of patient safety, including how they were influenced by today’s modern safety sciences and systems theory and design. Indeed, the book emphasizes how the growing awareness of systems-design thinking and the self-education and commitment to improving patient safety, by not only Dr. Leape but a wide range of other clinicians and health executives from both the private and public sectors, all converged to drive forward the patient safety movement in the US. Making Healthcare Safe is divided into four parts: I. In the Beginning describes the research and theory that defined patient safety and the early initiatives to enhance it. II. Institutional Responses tells the stories of the efforts of the major organizations that began to apply the new concepts and make patient safety a reality. Most of these stories have not been previously told, so this account becomes their histories as well. III. Getting to Work provides in-depth analyses of four key issues that cut across disciplinary lines impacting patient safety which required special attention. IV. Creating a Culture of Safety looks to the future, marshalling the best thinking about what it will take to achieve the safe care we all deserve. Captivatingly written with an “insider’s” tone and a major contribution to the clinical literature, this title will be of immense value to health care professionals, to students in a range of academic disciplines, to medical trainees, to health administrators, to policymakers and even to lay readers with an interest in patient safety and in the critical quest to create safe care.

Book Incorporating Education to Enhance Hand Hygiene Compliance Among Nurses

Download or read book Incorporating Education to Enhance Hand Hygiene Compliance Among Nurses written by Ashley Roberts and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background: Hand washing is the number one practice by nurses that can prevent the spread of infection. Proper hand washing and the understanding of this responsibility can improve patient care. The Joint Commission reported an overall 36% compliance in hand hygiene over the last three decades. The issue that every nurse is aware of the fact that hand washing it the most important intervention, but continues to dismiss this practice time after time. Evidence Based Framework: The formation of the project has been based on the Steven's Ace Star Model. Through this framework, the problem has been identified, explored and an intervention has been chosen to create improvements through evidence based practice (EBP). Nightingale's Environmental theory has been connected to this project to support the need for proper hand hygiene. Methods: Effort was made to increase compliance in hand hygiene, and implement evidence-based education to improve hand hygiene among nurses and other health care workers. With this effort, there has been a proposed plan for sustainability by continuing to employ frequent hand hygiene trainings at the health care facility. Findings: Findings reported from Infection Control reported an overall increase in awareness of proper hand hygiene. By using participants from the in service to monitor hand hygiene among nurses, new understand of proper hand hygiene was reported. More through grading was done and an increase in awareness of troubled areas that need to be targeted in all units found. Conclusion: Following the project, the conclusion can be drawn that awareness was increased from the intervention. By educating a small sample of nurse, word was spread and continued to filter throughout the facility. Other departments were made more aware of special areas such as hand hygiene pre and post patient contact that they had been suffering in and were not fully aware was included in hand hygiene.

Book Improving Hand Hygiene Compliance to Reduce the Incidence of Hospital Acquired Infections

Download or read book Improving Hand Hygiene Compliance to Reduce the Incidence of Hospital Acquired Infections written by Sisaly Varghese and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hospital acquired infections (HAI) are a major public health problem today, resulting in increased morbidity, mortality, and increased health care cost. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there were approximately 1.7 million HAIs which caused 99,000 deaths in 2002. Hospitalized patients carry infectious microorganisms which are transmitted from one patient to other by the hands of health care workers (HCW). Hand washing is the best way to remove these microorganisms and to prevent transmission of diseases. According to Takahashi and Turale (2010), regular and timely hand washing practices can reduce the incidence of infection in health care facilities. However, hand washing compliance remains unacceptably low among HCWs. A study conducted by Knoll and others (2010), revealed that compliance with hand hygiene can be positively influenced by education, knowledge, motivation and relevant training courses; and also be negatively impacted by external factors such as increased workload. Implementing an evidence-based hand hygiene compliance program to improve hand hygiene practice and to promote compliance is paramount important in preventing HAIs among hospitalized patients. Disseminating the results of the compliance program targeting the intended audience would share knowledge about the program to improve practice and to maximize its impact on patient outcome. Evaluating the HCWs knowledge and compliance with hand hygiene practices using a monitoring tool and competency check list will determine the effectiveness of the program. Compliance with recommended hand hygiene guidelines reduces transmission of microorganisms and decreases the incidence of HAIs which in turn will decrease mortality, morbidity, and health care cost.
