Book excerpt: This report documents results of a program to evaluate effectiveness of more or less conventional subsurface samplers in obtaining representative and undisturbed samples of noncohesive alluvial materials containing large quantities of gravels and cobbles. This is the first phase of a research program to improve core drill methods. Samplers evaluated consisted of the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory membrane sampler, 4-in. Denison sampler, 6-in. Denison sampler, 5-in. Modified Denison sampler, and 3-in. thinwall drive tube. Small representative samples were obtained with the Denison samplers; no undisturbed samples were obtained. The field work was accomplished in the Rhodes Canyon area, White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico.

Download or read book The China Continental Scientific Drilling Project written by Da Wang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-03-06 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book comprehensively introduces the drilling theory and practice behind CCSD-1 well drilling, the first stage of a key national scientific engineering project of China. In addition to access to variety of data and information accumulated decade during the project’s decade-long operation, readers also gain insight into state-of-the-art techniques and most recent achievements in China’s scientific drilling industry. Specifically, this work introduces the drilling engineering design, well site construction, and equipment and construction situation. It also provides a minute description on the new techniques that were developed for tackling the technical difficulties, expounds in detail the core drilling techniques for hard rock deep well, and treats diamond core drill bits, reaming drilling techniques in hard crystalline rocks, well-deviation control techniques for strong dipping strata, and much more. In summary, this book offers a valuable resource for engineers and technicians who engage in scientific drilling and a variety of resource drilling engineering; teachers and students who are interested in this field will also gain plentiful information. Prof. Da Wang, the former deputy director of China Geological Survey, was the director of the Engineering Centre, chief engineer and drill-site general director of China Continental Scientific Drilling Project.
Download or read book Ground Improvement Third Edition written by Klaus Kirsch and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-11-26 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When finding another location, redesigning a structure, or removing troublesome ground at a project site are not practical options, prevailing ground conditions must be addressed. Improving the ground—modifying its existing physical properties to enable effective, economic, and safe construction—to achieve appropriate engineering performance is an increasingly successful approach. This third edition of Ground Improvement provides a comprehensive overview of the major ground improvement techniques in use worldwide today. Written by recognized experts who bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to bear on their contributions, the chapters are fully updated with recent developments including advancements in equipment and methods since the last edition. The text provides an overview of the processes and the key geotechnical and design considerations as well as equipment needed for successful execution. The methods described are well illustrated with relevant case histories and include the following approaches: Densification using deep vibro techniques or dynamic compaction Consolidation employing deep fabricated drains and associated methods Injection techniques, such as permeation and jet grouting, soil fracture grouting, and compaction grouting New in-situ soil mixing processes, including trench-mixing TRD and panel-mixing CSM approaches The introductory chapter touches on the historical development, health and safety, greenhouse gas emissions, and two less common techniques: blasting and the only reversible process, ground freezing. This practical and established guide provides readers with a solid basis for understanding and further study of the most widely used processes for ground improvement. It is particularly relevant for civil and geotechnical engineers as well as contractors involved in piling and ground engineering of any kind. It would also be useful for advanced graduate and postgraduate civil engineering and geotechnical students.
Download or read book Deep Rotary Core Drilling in Ice written by G. Robert Lange and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rotary drilling equipment was modified and used to obtain cores from glaciers in Northwest Greenland, Byrd Station and Little America V, Antarctica. Using cold compressed air, specially designed bits and other modifications, cores were obtained to 1345 feet in Greenland, 1000 feet at Byrd Station and the Ross Ice Shelf was penetrated to a depth of 840 feet at Little America V. In all locations cracks in the core appeared with increasing frequency at depth due to the sudden release of the overburden load when the core was cut in the air-filled hole. Special equipment and techniques developed dealt with the problem with some success. (Author Modified Abstract).

Download or read book Ground Improvement Second Edition written by Michael P. Moseley and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2004-02-03 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing need to redevelop land in urban areas has led to major development in the field of ground improvement, a process that is continuing and expanding. Vibratory deep compaction and grouting techniques have also been increasingly applied to solving the problems of urban development, whether from tunnelling, excavation, building renovation or bearing capacity improvement and settlement reduction. The second edition of this well established book continues to provide an international overview of the major techniques in use. Comprehensively updated in line with recent developments, each chapter is written by an acknowledged expert in the field. Ground Improvements is written for geotechnical and civil engineers, and for contractors working in grouting, ground improvement, piling and environmental engineering.
