Book Improvement of Australian Temperate Perennial Grasses

Download or read book Improvement of Australian Temperate Perennial Grasses written by G. Sutherland and published by Csiro. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduced perennial pasture grasses provided the mainstay for the animal industries in the temperate high-rainfall region of Australia. Together with native grasses and introduced legumes, they are essential for sustainable animal production and assist in the amelioration of soil acidity, soil structure and water balance. This book is the result of the First National Perennial Grass Workshop which was held in October 1993 and involved representatives from State Departments of Agriculture and Primary Industries, CSIRO, NZ AgResearch, universities, major seed companies, rural industry research corporations and primary producers. The programme comprised invited reviews covering the major introduced species and native perennial grasses. This material was originally published in New Zealand Journal of Agricultural Research 37 (3) 1994.

Download or read book Climate Change written by Juan A. Blanco and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2011-09-06 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an interdisciplinary view of how to prepare the ecological and socio-economic systems to the reality of climate change. Scientifically sound tools are needed to predict its effects on regional, rather than global, scales, as it is the level at which socio-economic plans are designed and natural ecosystem reacts. The first section of this book describes a series of methods and models to downscale the global predictions of climate change, estimate its effects on biophysical systems and monitor the changes as they occur. To reduce the magnitude of these changes, new ways of economic activity must be implemented. The second section of this book explores different options to reduce greenhouse emissions from activities such as forestry, industry and urban development. However, it is becoming increasingly clear that climate change can be minimized, but not avoided, and therefore the socio-economic systems around the world will have to adapt to the new conditions to reduce the adverse impacts to the minimum. The last section of this book explores some options for adaptation.

Book Applications of Gene Based Technologies for Improving Animal Production and Health in Developing Countries

Download or read book Applications of Gene Based Technologies for Improving Animal Production and Health in Developing Countries written by Harinder P.S. Makkar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-08-12 with total page 787 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern Biotechnology has potential for solving many problems associated with animal productivity and health and offers exciting opportunities for enhancing agricultural productivity. At present the focus is, however, on the issues and problems of significance for livestock producers in the developed world. In order to fully realize the benefits of this technology in developing countries, there is a need to identify, characterize and apply appropriate gene-based technologies for these regions. These proceedings present peer reviewed state-of-the-art papers describing the achievements in the areas of animal breeding and genetics, animal nutrition, animal health, and environment, ethics, safety, and regulatory aspects of gene-based technologies; achievements which could be realized using these modern scientific tools to maximise the benefits from the 'livestock revolution' that is taking place; and the constraints in the use of gene-based technologies and their specific research needs. This book will help in bridging the wide gap between developed and developing countries, in the development and use of gene-based technologies, and to elucidate the current and future roles of such technologies in the developing world. It is a good reference source for researchers, students and policy-makers alike.

Book Future of Sustainable Agriculture in Saline Environments

Download or read book Future of Sustainable Agriculture in Saline Environments written by Katarzyna Negacz and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-06-24 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food production on present and future saline soils deserves the world’s attention particularly because food security is a pressing issue, millions of hectares of degraded soils are available worldwide, freshwater is becoming increasingly scarce, and the global sea-level rise threatens food production in fertile coastal lowlands. Future of Sustainable Agriculture in Saline Environments aims to showcase the global potential of saline agriculture. The book covers the essential topics, such as policy and awareness, soil management, future crops, and genetic developments, all supplemented by case studies that show how this knowledge has been applied. It offers an overview of current research themes and practical cases focused on enhancing food production on saline lands. FEATURES Describes the critical role of the revitalization of salt-degraded lands in achieving sustainability in agriculture on a global scale Discusses practical solutions toward using drylands and delta areas threatened by salinity for sustainable food production Presents strategies for adaptation to climate change and sea-level rise through food production under saline conditions Addresses the diverse aspects of crop salt tolerance and microbiological associations Highlights the complex problem of salinity and waterlogging and safer management of poor-quality water, supplemented by case studies A PDF version of this book is available for free in Open Access at www.taylorfrancis.com.
