Book Improved Techniques for Construction of Snow Roads and Airstrips

Download or read book Improved Techniques for Construction of Snow Roads and Airstrips written by Sung M. Lee and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rammsonde profile measurements and surface strength (Clegg impact) tests were conducted at selected sites in Antarctica on the snow roadways between McMurdo Station and Williams Field as well as on the aircraft skiway. Rammsonde measurements were also made at several points on the South Pole Station and South Pole Stations. The purpose of the snow pit work was to investigate possible correlation between Rammsonde hardness data of the snowpack and the snow characterization data consisting of profiles of temperature, density, stratification, grain size, and metamorphic state. California bearing ratio (CBR) testing, to supplement previous work, was done in a laboratory coldroom at Michigan Technological University using snow that had been harvested near Houghton, Michigan, during the winter of 1985-86. A report on this will be published separately. The samples were prepared in a compaction machine and tested after sintering times of 7, 14 and 21 days at -10 C.A field test was conducted in Houghton with binder/additive-snow mixes in situ. Keywords: Aircraft skiways, Antarctica, Snow roads, Snow runways, Field tests. (SDW).

Book Expedient Snow Airstrip Construction Technique

Download or read book Expedient Snow Airstrip Construction Technique written by Elmer F. Clark and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Specialized snow runway processing and construction equipment ordinarily is not available to Army engineer troop units. Therefore, utilization of existing equipment and devices improvised in the field is necessary. Disaggregation of the natural snow cover, followed immediately by compaction and grading, is the fundamental procedure required for preparing a snow pavement capable of supporting, after age hardening, wheeled aircraft of the Caribou and C-47 class. A peg-toothed A-frame harrow, a corrugated roller and drags, constructed in the field, can be used with available D-7 or D-8 bulldozers for the disaggregation, compaction, and grading processes. Book Snow Road Construction A Summary of Technology from Past to Present

Download or read book Snow Road Construction A Summary of Technology from Past to Present written by J. L. Barthelemy and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During 1947, Naval Construction Forces built a compacted-snow airstrip on the Ross Ice Shelf in Antarctica. Research methods since then have improved the use of snow as a construction material. Snow-compaction techniques and equipment initially developed by the Civil Engineering Laboratory (CEL) for runway construction have been used to build durable, high-strength roads. At the present time, properly constructed and routinely maintained roads built from specially processed snow can support passenger vehicles, pickups, vans, trucks, and tractor-trailer combinations fitted with flotation tires at gross weights up to 75,000 pounds. Two methods of construction developed by CEL are recommended: (1) layered-compaction and (2) depth-processing. In layered-compaction, the most recently perfected technique, a snow pavement, is elevated to a desired height by compacting successive 4-inch layers, using a rotary snowplow to gather, process, and deposit the snow material. The alternative method requires depth-processing, using snow mixers to pulverize material placed on the roadway. This final report documents the evolution of vehicle road systems on snow and presents a synoptic overview, summarizing all aspects of snow-road technology, from theoretical considerations to historical development and recommended procedures.

Book Snow and Ice Properties as Related to Roads and Runways in Antarctica

Download or read book Snow and Ice Properties as Related to Roads and Runways in Antarctica written by Gunars Abele and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamic tests were performed to determine the Young's modulus of sea ice, derived from longitudinal wave velocities measured with a soniscope. Static tests consisted of standard ring tensile strength and simple beam or flexural strength tests. The strength data were plotted on a base of the brine volume for each test. The test results indicate that the annual sea ice at McMurdo Sound is capable of supporting cargo type aircraft. Snow runways capable of supporting a C-130 aircraft on wheels and providing marginal support to a C-121 can be constructed either with the Peter plow or with the pulvimixer. However, the runway would be reliable only during comparatively low temperatures (
