Book excerpt: Increasing seat belt use is one of the most effective and least costly ways of reducing the lives lost and injuries incurred on the nation's highways each year, yet about one in four drivers and front-seat passengers continues to ride unbuckled. The Transportation Research Board, in response to a congressional request for a study to examine the potential of in-vehicle technologies to increase belt use, formed a panel of 12 experts having expertise in the areas of automotive engineering, design, and regulation; traffic safety and injury prevention; human factors; survey research methods; economics; and technology education and consumer interest. This panel, named the Committee for the Safety Belt Technology Study, examined the potential benefits of technologies designed to increase belt use, determined how drivers view the acceptability of the technologies, and considered whether legislative or regulatory actions are necessary to enable their installation on passenger vehicles. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the study sponsor, funded and conducted interviews and focus groups of samples of different belt user groups to learn more about the potential effectiveness and acceptability of technologies ranging from seat belt reminder systems to more aggressive interlock systems, and provided the information collected to the study committee. The committee also supplemented its expertise by holding its second meeting in Dearborn, Michigan, where it met in proprietary sessions with several of the major automobile manufacturers, a key supplier, and a small business inventor of a shifter interlock system to learn of planned new seat belt use technologies as well as about company data concerning their effectiveness and acceptability. The committee's findings and recommendations are presented in this five-chapter report.

Book Design of Seat Belt Presenter from Concept to Prototype

Download or read book Design of Seat Belt Presenter from Concept to Prototype written by Michael Thomas Dietrich and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Auto safety has increased per driven mile for some time. The increase in safety is due to more crash-worthy vehicle designs, better road design, guard rails and barriers, safety features, and more stringent federal safety standards. One of the biggest causes for the increase in safety is the increase in seat belt use. Seat belts have been shown to be approximately fifty percent effective in preventing fatalities in auto accidents. However, auto accidents are still the leading cause of death for young adults aged 16 to 34. Accidents cause tens of thousands of deaths, millions of injuries and cost billions of dollars each year. Seat belt use now stands at an all time high, with eighty percent of the population buckling up. Secondary and primary enforcement laws have helped increase seat belt use rates, however too many people choose to disregard this important vehicle safety feature. The main causes for seat belt non-use are: forgetting to buckle, neglecting to buckle, especially for short trips, feeling self conscience about buckling, or worrying that a seat belt might do as much harm as good. These issues must be addressed to further increase safety on our nation's roadways. The aim of this study was to increase automobile safety through increasing seat belt use. The causes for seat belt non-use were examined and a number of possible solutions were developed to address these causes. The solutions that will be presented in this paper range from a public information campaign, a media awareness campaign, and a number of engineering concepts meant to redefine the act of buckling up. The designs were evaluated based on selection criteria. These criteria included: effectiveness in addressing the causes of seat belt non-use, cost, vehicle applicability, passenger anthropometry, and acceptability to the public. On the advice of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, NHTSA, one of these designs was then selected to be prototyped. The prototype was designed, constructed, and tested for functionality. Finally, recommendations were made for future work with this prototype, including an acceptability study using a large sample survey, and design changes to move from the prototype part into production.

Book Design and Testing of a Seat Belt Presenter

Download or read book Design and Testing of a Seat Belt Presenter written by Mark Albert Burkhart and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration lists seat belt use as one area that needs improvement before a significant decline in traffic related fatalities and injuries will be seen. The first step by the NHTSA in addressing this problem was to fund research into improving the seat-safety belt system effectiveness, comfort, and convenience. The results of this initial research were prototype designs for a belt presenter mechanism for 3 and 4-point belts. The focus of this thesis was redesigning the existing presenter and also conducting a pilot usability study. Nearly every component of the prototype was redesigned, including the drive mechanism, the housing, and the electrical system. Performance issues such as presentation speed, and presenter arm positioning were optimized for the usability study. Test structures that simulate a typical car driver's seat environment were designed from the ground up and were built for use in the study. The redesigned presenters were built and fitted to the test structures. Participants in the study were asked to test out a 3-point seat belt presenter, a 4-point seat belt presenter, and a seat fitted with a standard seat belt system. The participants then filled out a questionnaire, which was meant to gather physical data about the participant, the participant's evaluation of each seat belt system, and information on the participant's past seat belt use. The data was statistically analyzed to determine how different groups of people tend to rate each seat belt system based on comfort and usability. Female participants and participants with mobility issues, such as arthritis, back pain, or shoulder pain, showed a strong preference for the 4-point seat belt presenter system. Overall, with regards to ease of use, both the 3-point presenter system and the 4-point presenter system were rated significantly higher than the traditional 3-point seatbelt, using a significance level of [alpha] =.05. Based on all of the observations, the investigators recommend slight changes to the presenter mechanism design. A larger study, focusing on the ergonomic implementation of the seat belt presenter mechanism and using real car cockpits needs to be conducted. Further investigation of the safety characteristics of 4-point seat belts is also needed.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project presents the factors that are crucial in improving the design of seat belt based on the specific related measurement and others. The problem arises in the usage of seat belt if the driver's body deviates from average anthropometric measurements may cause the driver feel not comfortable during driving task also feel not comfortable and for pregnant woman they feel discomfort, fear of harming the fetus when seat belt on. Anthropometric data is playing a main role in the design development to create an ergonomic product which is seat belt in the car. Appropriate use of anthropometry in design may improve well being, health, comfort, and safety. Understanding the fundamental and get detailed information about seat belt design with part involved in Viva car that produced by PERODUA by a visit to the national car company, PERODUA and safety belt supplier, Autoliv Hirotako. The structured interview was involved with the gynaecologist to obtain information on the correct way to wear a car seat belt for pregnant women and determine the other parameters that important for pregnant woman using a seat belt when driving. A total of 30 respondents were asked or interviewed to determine the level of comfort when wearing a seat belt in certain areas and also to understand how pregnant women wear seat belts and any problems they experienced while driving. The data on 95 th percentile female Malaysian citizen will be compared with the data of 95 thpercentile American Male (AM). The result will generate guidelines and an information resource for designers in the automotive industry of national car seat belt and their supplier in order to improve the quality life of pregnant women or big size driver. In this project, a new design of a device had been designed by using CATIA software.
