Book excerpt: The 1990 Department of Transportation and Related Agencies Appropriation Act directed the Department of Transportation to prepare a report with the following objectives: update for the use of Congress a nationwide inventory of existing scenic byways; develop guidelines for the establishment of a National Scenic Byways Program, including recommended techniques for maintaining and enhancing the scenic, recreational, and historic qualities associated with each byway; conduct case studies of the economic impact of scenic byways on travel and tourism; and analyze potential safety consequences and environmental impacts associated with scenic byway designation. To respond directly to the first objective, the Federal Highway Administration developed a questionnaire in May 1990, to obtain information on Scenic Byways and byways programs. This report summarizes all four parts of the questionnaire.

The automobile has made regional dispersal possible and created opportunities for many small rural communities to supplement rural economies with a tourism economy. Drive Tourism is a popular form of tourism activity that has significantly contributed to the development of Tourism in many nations, but has received relatively little attention in the literature. This book is the first attempt to provide a global comprehensive review and scholarly investigation into this popular and growing form of tourism. It draws on a vast range of geographical locations to critically explore the impacts of drive tourism in developed and underdeveloped regions. It evaluates tourism authorities’ response to the Drive Tourism Experience, and offers operational insights into the management of the drive experience as well as providing original empirical research and insights into the field that will contribute to future investigation. In doing so it explores the many forms of drive tourism from caravanning to fly drive touring.

As essential research material, the book provides strong support for policy makers and planners by comprehensively covering three groups of strategies, characterized by the words “avoid” (e.g., urban form design and control of car ownership), “shift” (e.g., establishing comprehensive transportation systems and increasing public transportation systems for both intracity and intercity travel), and “improve” (e.g., redesign of paratransit system, low-emission vehicles, intelligent transportation systems, and eco-life).
