It will cover curriculum planning, measurement and performance assessment, teaching residents to teach, coaching, promoting professionalism, teaching surgeons to lead, and burnout. It will aid in identifying differences in generations and how to select students and residents who will thrive in your program. Specifics on teaching in the operating room, use of new technologies and honing of feedback skills will be addressed. The effect of duty hours and due process for struggling learners will also be addressed as well as preparing residents for beyond residency. Specifics on how to set up simulation centers and utilize this technology will also be discussed. These are a few of the topics which will prepare the reader to excel in education and thus be able to positively influence patient care well beyond that of any one individual.

Book The Effects of Reengineering Operating Room Case Scheduling at Madigan Army Medical Center

Download or read book The Effects of Reengineering Operating Room Case Scheduling at Madigan Army Medical Center written by Mark C. Wilhite and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was designed to evaluate the effects of reengineering operating room case scheduling at Madigan Army Medical Center. The goal of the reengineering initiative was to reduce the variations leading to inefficiency, thereby improving the processes and allowing for increased throughput in the operating room complex. Five variables, operating room turn over time, surgeon time, surgical cancellations, surgical referrals, and surgical backlog were analyzed. Data collection occurred in two phases. The first phase was retrospective and consisted of the time period from June 1, 1997 through August 31, 1997. The second phase was concurrent with the implementation of the reengineering initiative and consisted of the period September 1, 1997 through November 30, 1997. Independent-samples t tests indicated no significant differences (p=.O 1) in the variables after implementation of the reengineering initiative. Decreased variations were seen in three of the variables: operating room turn over time, surgeon time, and surgical cancellations. The results of this study indicate improvements in the operating room complex were realized after implementing the reengineering initiative.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is dedicated to improving healthcare through reducing delays experienced by patients. With an interdisciplinary approach, this new edition, divided into five sections, begins by examining healthcare as an integrated system. Chapter 1 provides a hierarchical model of healthcare, rising from departments, to centers, regions and the “macro system.” A new chapter demonstrates how to use simulation to assess the interaction of system components to achieve performance goals, and Chapter 3 provides hands-on methods for developing process models to identify and remove bottlenecks, and for developing facility plans. Section 2 addresses crowding and the consequences of delay. Two new chapters (4 and 5) focus on delays in emergency departments, and Chapter 6 then examines medical outcomes that result from waits for surgeries. Section 3 concentrates on management of demand. Chapter 7 presents breakthrough strategies that use real-time monitoring systems for continuous improvement. Chapter 8 looks at the patient appointment system, particularly through the approach of advanced access. Chapter 9 concentrates on managing waiting lists for surgeries, and Chapter 10 examines triage outside of emergency departments, with a focus on allied health programs Section 4 offers analytical tools and models to support analysis of patient flows. Chapter 11 offers techniques for scheduling staff to match patterns in patient demand. Chapter 12 surveys the literature on simulation modeling, which is widely used for both healthcare design and process improvement. Chapter 13 is new and demonstrates the use of process mapping to represent a complex regional trauma system. Chapter 14 provides methods for forecasting demand for healthcare on a region-wide basis. Chapter 15 presents queueing theory as a method for modeling waits in healthcare, and Chapter 16 focuses on rapid delivery of medication in the event of a catastrophic event. Section 5 focuses on achieving change. Chapter 17 provides a diagnostic for assessing the state of a hospital and using the state assessment to select improvement strategies. Chapter 18 demonstrates the importance of optimizing care as patients transition from one care setting to the next. Chapter 19 is new and shows how to implement programs that improve patient satisfaction while also improving flow. Chapter 20 illustrates how to evaluate the overall portfolio of patient diagnostic groups to guide system changes, and Chapter 21 provides project management tools to guide the execution of patient flow projects.

Book TOP KNIFE The Art Craft of Trauma Surgery

Download or read book TOP KNIFE The Art Craft of Trauma Surgery written by Asher Hirshberg, and published by tfm Publishing Limited. This book was released on 2004-10-01 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will help you take a badly wounded patient to the operating room, organize yourself and your team, do battle with some vicious injuries and come out with the best possible result. It is a practical guide to operative trauma surgery for residents and registrars, for general surgeons with an interest in trauma, and for isolated surgeons operating on wounded patients in military, rural or humanitarian settings. A surgical atlas may show you what to do with your hands but not how to think, plan and improvise. Here you will find practical advice on how to use your head as well as your hands when operating on a massively bleeding trauma patient. The first part of this book presents some general principles of trauma surgery. The second part is about trauma surgery as a contact sport. Here we show you how to deal with specific injuries to the abdomen, chest, neck and peripheral vessels. The single most important lesson we hope you will derive from this book is to always keep it simple because, in trauma surgery, the simple stuff works.
