This study estimates the potential of digitalized mobility solutions, such as Mobility as a Service (MaaS), to reduce emissions and vehicle kilometers travelled in the Nordic countries. Also, to assess the potential future impact of MaaS, modelling is done to project road transport’s energy consumption, CO2 emissions and total costs in the Nordic countries up to 2050. There are still several barriers to the wider adoption of shared mobility services. We present ways to overcome these barriers with incentives and policy instruments to substitute car ownership, and specify what different actors can do to accelerate this change. Finally we present policy recommendations on how to reduce the dependence on car ownership, reduce the vehicle kilometers driven, and stimulate the demand for greener mobility services.

Book excerpt: The ongoing diffusion of digital technologies heralds a major change in the mobility domain as it helps to unearth significant opportunities for the reorganization of socio-technical arrangements that have existed for decades. In this light, both scholars and practitioners have begun to investigate the novel opportunities and challenges confronting the mobility sector. This cumulative thesis, composed of five individual studies, aspires to provide a comprehensive understanding of the transformational impacts of pervasive digital technologies on business models in the mobility sector. Employing a multi-level perspective, this thesis focuses on three main objectives: (1) shedding light on the nature of digitalization and its impacts on business models in general terms, (2) exploring changes in incumbent mobility firms’ business models in response to the increased diffusion of digital technologies, and (3) examining the potentials of digital technologies to improve value creation and capture in disruptive mobility business models. The findings underline that digitalization is not only concerned with technical aspects but is rather a socio-technical process of applying digital technologies to broader institutional and social contexts. Due to the diversity of technologies and actors involved, digitalization has evolved into an overarching phenomenon that is beyond the control of single actors and affects changes in firms’ business models through diverse mechanisms. In addition, this thesis describes how incumbent mobility firms adapt their business models in light of consumers’ changing preferences and how they source the knowledge necessary to develop innovations that build upon hybrid combinations of physical and digital components. Finally, the thesis elaborates on the capacity of digital technologies to facilitate the rise of disruptive mobility business models by improving their attractiveness for both consumers and providers. The crucial success factor is compatibility with the surrounding digital eco-systems, thus rendering it imperative to co-create and co-capture value with diverse actors, including partners, competitors, and customers. From the findings, this thesis derives valuable implications for both research and practice.

As new mobility options emerge users are faced with an increasingly splintered mobility landscape. By unifying emerging on-demand modes with traditional mobility options, MaaS can increase users' transportation accessibility, empowering users to pick between and use different modes. Furthermore, by offering users incentives MaaS has the potential to shift users towards more sustainable mobility patterns, improving network congestion and emissions. The objective of this thesis is to analyze the potential demand for MaaS in cities in the United States using agent-based simulation. Three different MaaS menus are designed, comprising of MaaS plans varying in price and incentive structure. The adoption of, subscription to, and impacts of these MaaS menus is simulated in three major city-types present in the U.S. using the state-of-the-art simulation laboratory developed by the MIT Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Lab, SimMobility. SimMobility is a multi-scale, multi-modal activity- and agent-based simulation software suitable for high-fidelity simulation of hypothetical transportation scenarios. This thesis demonstrates that MaaS has the potential to penetrate the United States, capturing both users of both sustainable and unsustainable modes. MaaS has the potential to improve transportation sustainability by promoting car-agnostic transit such as mass transit and Mobility on Demand to car users, while also having the potential to trigger switches away from sustainable active mobility modes.
