Book Use of Traveler Information to Improve Texas Transportation Network Operations in the Context of Toll Roads

Download or read book Use of Traveler Information to Improve Texas Transportation Network Operations in the Context of Toll Roads written by C. Michael Walton and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enhanced diversion of traffic to toll roads would have two benefits: increase toll road usage, and reduce congestion on non-tolled roads. Evaluation of the dual benefits is the primary objective and the essence of this study. The research team first synthesized the state-of-the-art in Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS) implementations. Then a commuter survey was conducted in Austin, Texas to examine commuters' travel patterns, preferences and requirements on traveler information, and attitudes toward toll roads and ATIS implementation. Next, based on the survey results, a simulation case study was conducted on the transportation network of Austin, Texas using DYNASMART-P model. Finally, ATIS benefit cost analysis, implementation issues, technologies, funding opportunities, and potential business models were investigated.

Book Implementation of Advanced Transit Traveler Information Systems in the United States and Canada

Download or read book Implementation of Advanced Transit Traveler Information Systems in the United States and Canada written by Anthony Charles Rizos and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past few years, public transit agencies across the United States and Canada have increasingly implemented methods for passengers to access traveler information using new media and personal mobile communications devices. The most advanced examples of these devices, commonly known as "smartphones," combine telephone, Internet browsing, and personal digital assistant (PDA) functionality into a single, portable unit. Mobile data applications are literally exploding on the scene every day, and transit agencies are under tremendous social and political pressure to deploy more related information systems as rapidly as possible. These applications are popular with technology-savvy riders who enjoy easy and real-time access to information and updates about their transit routes and services of choice, anywhere they happen to be. A review of the literature, as well as interviews with managers at thirteen transit authorities across the spectrum of size and technical sophistication, provides a portrayal of the states of the practice and art, and paints a clear picture of the challenges facing implementation of these advanced systems in the field. The research confirms the initial hypothesis that while transit agencies are indeed devoting energy to pursuing advanced traveler information systems, the approaches to implementing them could be improved. Based on the findings, I recommend that transit agencies: conduct necessary market research; develop more explicit and comprehensive traveler information system strategies; clarify the role and business case for social media; secure sufficient financial and technology resources; ensure sufficient operating as well as capital funding; eliminate constraints on use of data from commercial software; and, adopt and embrace open-source software development using an "open government" model.

Book Intelligent Transportation Systems

Download or read book Intelligent Transportation Systems written by Sundaravalli Narayanaswami and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2022-11-29 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transportation-related challenges exist all over the world, with all countries struggling to develop efficient, effective and user-friendly transportation systems. Today, policy agencies and financing institutions are keen to invest heavily for a potentially good transport systems, as good mobility is pertinent to social growth and a sustainable environment. Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) have become a global area of growth in recent times because of increasing demand for mobility, rampant urbanization, and depleting energy reserves. Existing conventional transport infrastructure fails to meet the ever-increasing demand; building additional transportation infrastructure is cumbersome, as it is time-consuming and capital-intensive and available land space is very limited. Therefore, there is a pressing need for innovative and locally relevant systems that can be built rapidly with less investment by leveraging advances in technology. Good ITS enable informed decision-making for all stakeholders. This book presents the ingredients of good ITS, not from a technology perspective, but from a business administration, management, and policy perspective. The emphasis is on practice-oriented, impactful and context relevant systems. Short, real-life case studies are presented for each topic, to keep the discerning transportation enthusiast engaged.

Book 511 National Progress Report

Download or read book 511 National Progress Report written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In July 2000, the Federal Communications Commission designated 511 as the nationwide telephone number for traveler information. The FCC left most implementation issues and schedules to state and local agencies and telecommunication agencies. This report documents the progress made through February 2003 in making 511 a national reality. Major milestones include the creation of the National 511 Deployment Coalition, the activation of the first 511 system in June 2002, the publication of implementation guidelines, the availability of planning grants, a national survey on customer expectations and creation of a vision statement. As of February 2003, fifteen 511 services were operational, and a total of 39 states and the District of Columbia were operating implementing, or planning 511 services. The Deployment Coalition hopes that by 2010, 511 will be operating throughout the United States. Key issues facing implementers include growth management, sustainability, interoperability, marketing, performance measures and the underlying content of the information.
