Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many are the books on Japan they mostly follow a prescription, reviewing different aspects of a country which is strangely unlike the lands of Christendom, though it has entered into economic competition with them. I have here tried to present something rather different. Encouraged by the fact that Japan in Recent Times, 1912-1926, has been found useful by other makers of books as well as by readers who sought to increase their knowledge, I have attempted here to present a sequel though it is only part of the same story in the sense that it continues the record. A reign that seemed likely to be quiet and humdrum has proved so full of happenings that it has been difficult, even at slightly greater length, to record these eleven years as adequately as the previous sixteen. But for readers who would like the facts rather than my gloss upon them, here is a book full of them. During ten of the eleven years I was seldom absent from the editorial desk of the Japan Chronicle., so there was little about current events that did not come my way, and I have tried to select from the mass the most significant and most closely related. Sometimes so many things were happening at once that it has been impossible to observe a strict chronology and the subject rather than the date has had to be considered. As in my previous book I have adhered to the Japanese custom of putting the surname first and the personal name after also, where titles are concerned, I have used the highest attained instead of explaining that the Mr. of one day was the Baron of the next.

Download or read book Japan in the World written by Klaus Schlichtmann and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2009 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accessing previously unpublished archival materials, "Japan in the World" examines the life and diplomatic work of Shidehara Kijuro (1872-1951), situating Shidehara within the context of twentieth century statecraft and international politics. While it was an age of devastating total wars that took a vast toll of civilian lives, the politics and diplomatic history between 1899 and 1949 also saw the light of new developments in international and constitutional law to curtail state sovereignty and reach a peaceful order of international affairs. "Japan in the World" is an essential resource for understanding that nation's contributions to these world-changing developments.

Download or read book Documents on the Tokyo International Military Tribunal written by Neil Boister and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-09-25 with total page 1560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the recent growth of interest in international criminal law, in research and practice, the Tokyo International Military Tribunal remains largely neglected. One of the reasons for this is the absence of any readily available version of the judgments that emanated from the Tribunal. This absence has prevented informed debate about a hugely important part of the development of international criminal law. These volumes fill the gap in the literature by reproducing the full text of the judgment, the separate and dissenting opinions and a selection of accompanying documents, including the charter, indictment and rules of procedure. All the documents are indexed and referenced to the original pagination of the Tribunal transcript. In addition, an introductory essay by the editors explains the nature of the tribunal and the law it applied, and outlines its impact on contemporary international criminal law.
Download or read book Political Bribery in Japan written by Richard H. Mitchell and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 1996-09-01 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholars often use the term "structural corruption" when discussing modern Japan's political system--a system that forces politicians to exchange favors with businessmen in return for funds to finance their political careers. Scholars argue that the origins of corruption can be found in the "iron triangles" formed by politicians, bureaucrats, and businessmen during the postwar era or during the Pacific War years. In this examination of malfeasance in Japanese public office, Richard Mitchell systematically surveys political bribery in Japan's historical and cultural contexts from antiquity to the early 1900s. Mitchell's narrative serially considers scandals involving courtiers in the ancient imperial government, corruption among the shogun's samurai officials, and political bribery among bureaucrats and party politicians in the mid-nineteenth century. Mitchell concludes that bribery was as ubiquitous in premodern Japan as it has been in recent times. Focusing on the period since 1868, Mitchell discusses in fascinating detail changes in political bribery in the wake of suffrage expansion, estimates of the enormous amount of campaign money needed to win a Diet seat in both the prewar and postwar periods, and the low conviction rate of suspected takers of bribes. Here is a highly readable and reliable survey of an important yet largely neglected topic in English-language studies of Japanese political history.

Download or read book China s Economic Rise written by Sangaralingam Ramesh and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-08-29 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the economic and political rise of China from the perspective of Japan’s economic development. Beginning with Japan’s rise to statehood in the Kamakura Period (1185 to 1333) and detailing the evolution of its economy through to 2018, parallels are drawn with the economic development of China. Many of the challenges Japan faced in the first decades of the 20th century, including nationalism, militarism, income disparities, social deprivation, and economic crisis are applicable to modern day China. China’s Economic Rise: Lessons from Japan’s Political Economy aims to detail the possible economic and political upheavals that could accompany the slowing of the Chinese economy from the experience of Japan. The book will be of interest to researchers and students in Political Economy, Economic History, Economic Transition, and Development Economics. The book supplements the other publications of the author: China’s Lessons for India: Volume 1 – The Political Economy of Development, China’s Lessons for India: Volume 2 – The Political Economy of Change and The Rise of Empires: The Political Economy of Innovation.
